JenniferL

On January 18th, Tor Books plans to release the complete graphic novel, New Spring. New Spring is a prequel to the Wheel of Time series. It was first published as a short story in 1998, then expended to a full novel in 2004. A comic book adaption followed shortly thereafter, though it was plagued with production and delivery issues. The story focuses on Moiraine Damodred, an Accepted in the White Tower and Lan Mandragoran, an officer in the Aiel War.

Tor has given us five copies of the graphic novel to give away here on Dragonmount. To enter just post below with your favorite memory of Lan and/or Moiraine from any book (Towers of Midnight spoilers allowed) by midnight Saturday, January 15th Eastern time. We regret that this contest is only open to fans in the United States.

You can pre-order the book now from Amazon.com or find it at your local bookstore.

Lan, being one of my most favorite characters in the book series has a few moments that I remember. First, his shock when Nynaeve followed his trail to find Rand, Perrin, Matt and Egwene. He was up to that point in the book, quite menacing and you could tell he was great in all things, but the comedy of his reaction is awesome. Second, is his reputation. He is known as Aan'allein to the Aiel, "a man who is an entire nation". Lastly, how he always calls Rand "Sheepherder" regardless of Rands attitude or station.

Moiraine from EOTW showed such courage standing up to the villagers. There was something about her spinning staff that still makes it her best "scene" to me.

I can't say my favorite, but definitely one of, was way back in EotW, I believe after everyone got split up Shadar Logoth, when Lan and Moiraine were sheltering off the side of the road, and Nynaeve sneaks up on them.

Just the chagrin that both felt, both Lan from being snuck up on, and Moiraine not noticing another channeler at first, was great. These two almost mythic figures at the time in the Two Rivers folks (and the readers) minds, two people who feel they may be better, get tailed, approached, and spied on by a lowly wisdom. Then the respect from both Lan and Moiraine that I at least sensed (I think it's actually mentioned from Lan) is icing on the cake.

Besides the little byplay where they go back and forth about the insects she tourtures Lan with, the last few scenes where they make the decision to find the Dragon Reborn together is as poiniant as most any other scene in the entire WoT series.

My favorite Lan moment is his scene with Nynaeve by the fire. She tells him her feelings and he responds by saying he can not be with her because his fight is with the Shadow. He goes on to say "I will hate the man you choose because he is not me, and love him if he makes you smile. No woman deserves the sure knowledge of widow's black as her bride price, you least of all."

He was a really strong but one dimensional character before this scene. You had glimpses of his other facets, but this scene made him human. It also made all the women readers want to "swoon" :)

My favorite Lan and Moiraine moment is when she asks him "does your bond chafe after all these years?" He responds "No" ... "Honor to serve Moiraine Aes Sedai. It has been and will be so, always." Then she says "You humility, Lan Gaidin, has always been more arrogance than most kings could manage with their armies at their backs."

I don't think it is arrogance so much as a quiet confidence. He knows his capacity and capabilities. He is the emulation of the knight in shining armor.

My favorite memory is when Moiraine and Lan are traveling after they first meet and and Lan somehow swears to himself she got ants or something to purposely march over and bite him, crazy right?

I believe Moiraine actually used a secret weave of her Ajah to do this so he was right.

My favorite memory of Lan was right after he and Nynaeve got married. It was funny to see him have even a bit of a sense of humor, since he's usually so stoic. It humanized him to me to see him have "warm" emotions and justified his and Nynaeve's love (because before, we were never privy to much in how that came about and how they managed to get along).

Favorite Lan moment is when he's schooling Rand on how to unnerve Morgase during their first meeting.

Favorite Moiraine moment is definitely her battle with Lanfear, though maybe more-so the sudden lack of her afterwards and the void she leaves when she exits the stage.

Favorite combo moment is Moiraine dumping Lan into the lake during their first meeting.

My favorite of Lan & Moiraine is on the trip to Tear (after Rand runs off on his own). Specifically the banter between them both concerning the Bond being passed to Myrelle. It is a great sequence.

My fav was her testing for the shawl, and my favorite of Lan is anytime he is with Nynaeve. Please pick me as the winner, I paid for my newspring comics, and after recieving 3, they stopped comming. Ive been back and forth with them for years now, and always a promise they are coming...then nothing. A tracking number that is worthless.. an apology with a promise of a refund..then nothing.

Light, I just want my comic! :D

Most epic Moiraine moment probably has to be when she fights Lanfear, it is just such a mindblowing turning point in the book.

For Lan, him coming through to save Nynaeve from the bottom of that canal. Classic Warder saving the day.

My favorite memory of Lan is when he finally accepts that the men of Malkeri will not let him fight the blight alone.

My Favorite of Moiraine is the letter that she wrote to Thom telling him there was a snow balls chance in hell of him rescuing her but telling him exactly how he has to do it should he choose to.

My favorite of the two of them together is when Moiraine tells Lan that his bond is to be passed around until the appropriate Aes Sedai is found to hold it.

I have so many favorite Lan memories - HE is one of my favorites. The first is in The Shadow Rising when Nynaeve is preparing to leave for Tanchico and he busts in with this great emotional scene and kisses her infront of Egwene and Elayne. You've got to love the Mashiara chapter where he rescues her from the balefire and she pukes on him. I also love the scene where Nynaeve leaves him in the Borderlands and goes to the inn and finds the Malkieri and says, "Will my husband ride alone?" More of a Nynaeve scene than a Lan scene - but still awesome for my money. Makes me cry every time. Another tear jerker for me is at the end of the ToM when he has all that interplay and conflict in his head and finally charges the Gap.

For Moiraine, the story of Aemon in Emonds Field in tEotW - awesome. Her fighting any and all shadowspawn in the first book with the Power. Our first experience with it and so epic, so dramatic before we really understand the Power. Her dealings with Rand in the later chapters before the fight with Lanfear - remembering how she learned to control Saidar. And finally the battle with Lanfear - don't mess with tiny chicks, they will just come flying at you when you least expect it and take you down!

Favorite Lan Scene: His conversation with Rand after Moiraine fights with Lanfear and "dies".

Favorite Moiraine Scene: Retelling the story of the destruction on Manetheren in Eye of the World.

Looking forward to have them both meet again...

The whole relationship evaluation between Lan & Moiraine when Nynaeve is introduced into the mix. Just Lan's struggle with who he remains loyal to and the tightrope walk that causes. Love!

I remember in the first book how Lan and Moiraine always seemed to be halfway psychic, able to anticipate everything about the other because of the Bond. I always loved the Bond concept, and Robert Jordan illustrated how it works perfectly by using Moiraine and Lan in the first book.

My favourite memory has to be when Moiraine's fiesty temper got the better of her and she dumped the river of cold water on Lan! I love a fiesty woman.

Has to be, for me at least, Lan not quite sure how to explaine why he has shown Rand how to act like a border-lord in front of the Armylin to Moraine.

My favorite memory of Lan is the conversation he has with Rand right after Moiraine's 'death' in The Fires of Heaven. And then the follow-up scene when Rand goes to Caemlyn in disguise and goes to Nynaeve's room is excellent as well.

My top two memories of Lan:

1. Near the end of The Eye of the World, when Rand overhears his conversations with Nynaeve: "I will hate the man you choose because he is not me, and love him if he makes you smile. I get teary every time I think back to it.

2. After Moiraine fell into the doorway with Lanfear: "It was a good day to die." I'd always pegged Lan for a Klingon...

My favorite Moiraine moment occurs in The Eye of the World, when she and Lan are attempting to leave Emond's Field with the boys. The way she tells the story of the fall of Manetheren to the villagers gives me the chills every time I read it. I don't believe there is a more dramatic scene with Moiraine anywhere else in the Wheel of Time.
