I know this has been discussed religiously, but there are so many threads about it i wanted to clear up my thoughts(dont really want to start a debate, just see what people think of these thoughts),

 

Right in the Begining of LOC, he arrives in shayol gaul in a fur lined cloack(dont forget randland is still in summer and its hot everywhere), and he also mentions a few hundred leagues north its pure ice. So my thoughts are we have no idea what demendred is up to and he has not shown up yet with whatever he is doing.

fur could be a decorational thing, or it could indicate a mountainous location

 

but the simplist explanation is best, from the same paragraph

"... but Thakan'dar was always dry as any desert, though always wrapped in winter." so he was wearing it in preparation for being there

I agree with Durinax, most likely it was preparation for his trip.

 

However, one interesting thing to note may be that in FoH, Rand and Aviendha visited Seanchan continent where it was snowing and in the midst of full blown winter.

Yea again makes sense, i just thought it was interesting because RJ is very detailied and everyone of his details usually has hidden meanings lol, he was very good at that. I just never paid to much attention to it before.
