Winter Reading List (nominations)

It's time to get new books for our book club. You can nominate as many books as you like, and they should fit within one of the four categories: fiction, non-fiction, fantasy and classic.

This time PLEASE try and not just name the book, but also name the AUTHOR and A URL!

Thank you. =)

It seems like my suggestion of "Collapse" for non-fiction didn't work out so well. Probably because most people don't read 900 page books about resource management for fun. Even if Jared Diamond is one of Jordan's favorite authors.

Anyways, I'm in the mood for some Jon Krakauer this month. He's got three that I really like "Into Thin Air", "Into the Wild" and "Under the Banner of Heaven".

"Into Thin Air" is the true story of the deadliest Mt. Everest mission recorded. The author was on the mountain as part of an assignment to write about "adventure tourism". Its absolutely chilling the way he describes hearing people calling for help on the radio, but he can't go rescue them, because he'd die himself.

"Into the Wild" is about Christopher McCandless, a wealthy young man from a good family and good education, who gives it all up to go survive out in the wilderness of Alaska with nothing but his wits and a pocket knife. Four months later, they found his body in the woods, dead of starvation. Krakauer pieces together McCandless's life, strange journey and his death from eye witness interviews and survival experts. He also draws paralells to other "wild men" who tried to live outside society.

Hey, _I_ read "Collapse" for fun! *grins* It was really good! ... err... I just didn't come and discuss it here. *laughs*

And I'd like to nominate two books:

Charles Stross's "Singularity Sky," which is an awesome hard SF tale. Victorian military starcruisers, cyborg Bolshevik rebels, and near-Singularity civiliations-of-the-mind collide in a thrilling confrontation, with two secret agents from Earth struggling to survive and avert catastrophe!

And for nonfiction, I'd like to nominate "Six Frigates" by Ian Toll. This is the history of the founding of the American navy, with all the twists and turns that went into its creation, and the consequences for the young nation endured because of them. Seriously, a great book, with lots of exciting accounts of naval engagements, and a wealth of interesting ship-building information.

For Sci-fi, I would like to nominate the Homecoming: Harmony series by Orson Scott Card.

Its a really fasinating look into the future of mankind. We have destroyed Earth and colonized a new planet: Harmony. Forty million years later Earth calls a special select few home. Its an amazing story with many different characters and subplots, similar to the WoT. I think everyone will really enjoy it.

There are 5 books in the series:

The Memory of Earth

The Call of Earth

The Ships of Earth

Earthfall

Earthborn

Illiara, we did A Game of Thrones last time. You could nominate A Clash of Kings this time and see if anyone is interested =)

For a classic I would like to nominate Jane Austen's Pride and Predjudice. I'm assuming you all know what it's about so I'm not gonna bother with the summary.
