Nominate Your Piece of Classical Music for "It's A Knockout"!!! 2012

And as part of my continuation of getting activities going in the Band again, next up is "It's A Knockout". And this is the nice easy part!

Between now and SUNDAY 13TH MAY 2012, nominate the piece of classical music you want to see try and win the contest. Follow the simple proforma below to get a nomination in. Name the piece of classical music, its composer, explain why you have nominated it, and provide a YouTube clip (or similar) of the piece.

Piece of Music (with composer):
Reason for Nomination:
YouTube (or similar link):

You can nominate more than one piece. Any nomination that is seconded, i.e. Corki suggests Piece X and Jeannaisais agrees with the nomination, automatically qualifies for a place in the "It's A Knockout" contest. There will also be 4 seeded pieces of music, which were the top 4 from when this contest was held in March 2011 - results can be found here! You can see what happened in March 2009 and May 2010! Otherwise, it will be done on a first come, first served basis. If there are any gaps at the end of the nomination period, I will fill in the gaps.

PLEASE NOTE: I am looking for a minimum of 4 or 12 nominations (taking into account the 4 seeds), and will be flexible on the "It's A Knockout" format depending on the number of nominations I get.

If you have any questions, please post them in this thread.

Arch! There are so many to choose from!

Piece of music: In the Hall of the Mountain King

Reason why: because let's face it, that is one of the most epic songs around. Who doesn't love in the hall of the mountain king?

Also nominating

Piece of music: Quartett 8-Shostakovich

Reason why: because it's a fantastic example of programmatic music and it's written by Shostakovich, who is amazing. It's written for the second world war and represents tanks, guns and warfare. It's one of the trickiest pieces to perform well-if it's not done amazingly, then it's horrible. :)

I'll upload the YouTube links as soon as I can.

C'mon, you lovers of classical music! Will no one second my nomination?

Here's my second nomination - check out the incredibly cool Virtual Choir!

Piece of Music (with composer): Eric Whitacre, Lux Aurumque

Reason for Nomination: The guy's a genius (not to mention heartbreakingly handsome); it's a gorgeous piece; Virtual Choir!!

As a fan of the composer, I must nominate a second piece by Eric Whitacre. You guys are going to love this one! I mean it! He composed this piece while attending the University of Nevada at Las Vegas. The piece got him into Juilliard for his masters program. He stretches the boundaries of "fair use". It's really a very, very clever piece of programmatic music.

Piece of Music (with composer): Eric Whitacre, Godzilla Eats Las Vegas

Reason for Nomination: Brilliant use of so many musical quotes I can't count 'em; plus clever use of orchestral pieces and players
