A hint on Shai'tan?

Lets start with a quote.

Towers of Midnight

"Epilogue"

Lo, it shall come upon the world that the prison of the Greatest One shall grow weak, like the limbs of those who crafted it. Once again, His glorious cloak shall smother the Pattern of all things, and the Great Lord shall stretch forth His hand to claim what is His. The rebellious nations shall be laid barren, their children caused to weep. There shall be none but Him, and those who have turned their eyes to His majesty.

Now I and bunch of other people have been throwing around a theory for a while that the entity that we know as the Dark One is actually just one facet of the whole picture of "evil" and when the bore was drilled, other facets of evil escaped/leaked out or yada yada yada whatever, it doesn't really matter, this thread isnt about that theory.

What im trying to point out is the phrasing - "prison of the Greatest One"

Greatest One implying he is the most Great out of numerous. I mean its pointless to say you're the greatest if you're the only...

Could this be a hint by RJ or BS as to this fact?

If so, is Shai-tan the greatest of the Evils? Greatest of the Gods? Of Men? and does this provide any more credibility to the unbalanced/incomplete Dark One theory?

We're already told that the evil of Shadar Logoth is different to the evil of the DO; of course, Rand uses this in destroying the taint on saidin - and SL.

However, the name Shadar Logoth means 'where the Shadow waits'. So already we have a Shadow of two aspects. It may have more.

Christianity classically recognises seven 'deadly sins' - anger, envy, lust, pride, gluttony, sloth, greed. Suppose there are in fact seven Lords of the Dark corresponding to each of these? Was one of these - Anger, perhaps - in charge of SL? Is the DO at SG the Lord of Envy (of the Creator's handiwork) or perhaps of Pride, if It insists It's the greatest?

Just a thought. I'm not sure if I even take it seriously myself

I agree with Pride for the DO, i always imagined him as a being created by the Creator who would turn and turn and keep turning the wheel in the vain hope that one day he may be free to destroy all of creation and or gain the recognition he deserves.

Could Shadar Logoth be gluttony? Mashadar does consume the life from things... Or Wrath? In that it would do anything even destroy its self to fight the Dark One...

Im not 100% on the theory either. But since I got the impression that the Creator, created the DO for the purpose of turning the wheel. I've always been curious as to what the effects of Him potentially losing/freeing facets of his personality would have on His nature and actions.

Maybe the DO used to be in equilibrium and time was progressing in the natural linear way - until something that was not meant to happen, happened... which resulted in the DO becoming imbalanced and time being caught in a loop, reenacting the same old ages again and again until (presumably) Rand can put him back together and time may be restored. Wow that almost sounded poetic =P

I guess this theory would appease the Fain-Plug theory too...

mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm the things i do to procrastinate studying for my pharmacotherapy test tomorrow =P

Just on a side note - not all christian denominations regognise the seven deadly sins. For example there's no such thing in Orthodox.

Back to topic - i don't think anything else escaped through the bore. Shadar Logoth, Machin Shin are in a way product of Shaitan - Shadar Logoth was trying to fight the shadow and in doing so they got corrupted. Machin Shin is a result of the tainted saidin, tainted bi the shadow.

Noted, thanks!

Perhaps those other Dark Ones are elsewhere - maybe in parallel worlds or mirror worlds, and they can reach through from those..

..no this is getting too silly

PS to the OP - good luck in your test!

He could just be "the Greatest One" because he is an entity that is compared to the "lesser ones" which are all the people on the earth. People call God the "Most High" and the "Greatest" but not because they necessarily believe he's one of many.

Actually, I think the DO and Creator are the same being/entity. I have a few reasons for thinking that, but not enough time to plot it out in a detailed theory post.

Hrrm, strangely enough i'm still not satisfied with these answers. I have a feeling that other forms of evil (if not simply Fain) will play a big role in the conclusion of the series. It reminds me of the description of the bore, a thinness in the pattern. A description which gives location to an event. Could the bore literally be a "hole" in the pattern? implying that something was removed to make it?
