Perrin may not have killed it...

Lan may have only slowed that one down... then got the hel out of there and since he wasn't the target it didn't chase him.

We never were introduced to two separate types, rather earlier in the story we see many things without a close-up including all the details of their construction and the rules that guide their lives. Later in the series we see many things clearer and with more detail.
