* NBC’s (NBC’s!) final Steve Carell “Office” was the highest-rated scripted episode of the week, beating even a new episode of Fox powehouser “Glee” and and the direct competition on ABC, megahit “Grey’s Anatomy.”

 

* There’s a lot of talk about “Celebrtiy Appretice” being the highest-rated series on NBC, which is not true. What a lot of the media has been missing is that Trump minus celebrities was one of NBC’s lowest-rated shows last autumn via “The Apprentice.” I say to NBC: keep Busey and Loaf; dump Trump.

 

* Last week’s “Parenthood” season finale did better than the last “SVU” and “Parks,” almost certainly locking in a third-season renewal.

* MTV stalwart “Real World” hit a season high, establishing itself momentarily as its channel’s top-rated series.

 

* “Game of Thrones” is currently pay cable’s top series, increasing its score over its premiere episode.

 

* "Justified" is momentarily cable's third-biggest scripted show. Its season finale airs Wednesday.

Big Bang Theory surprised me; I don't watch it, but I figured a lot of people still did.

 

South Park is expected because it's only gotten better with age.

 

I'm surprised Justified is 3rd. I didn't think many people watched it besides Empy.

Fox has elected to drop on its network scrapheap (alongside "The Good Guys" and "Lone Star") "Human Target," "Lie To Me," "The Chicago Code," “Breaking In,” and “Traffic Light."

 

The network’s schedule is jammed. Take away Fox's Sunday cartoons and Saturday reality justice shows, and you're left with only 10 hours a week of programming.

 

With Simon Cowell's "X Factor" launching this fall (two nights a week?) alongside Steven Spielberg’s “Terra Nova,” and with "Glee," "House," "Bones," “Fringe,” "Raising Hope" and "Hell's Kitchen"/"Kitchen Nightmares" all set to return (not to mention J.J. Abrams' now-greenlit-to-series “Alcatraz” and Tim Kring's not-yet-greenlit-to-series "Touch" and "Bones" spin-off "Finder" likely headed to midseason), there’s just not a lot of real estate left.

For the third year in a row, “Chuck” has slid off the bubble and landed on NBC’s fall schedule. Apparently NBC doesn’t expect its pilots to do much better than a 1.4!
