In the prologue we see the Borderland outposts being attacked. They didn't seem to be posts anywhere near Tarwin's Gap and if the Shadowspawn are attacking all along the border then what's the point of Tarwin's Gap? Why would any of the Shadowspawn go there if they could just cross over any point of the Border?

Shadowspawn can't travel so any choke point they can be stopped at (like Maradon) is vital in order to allow the smallest amount of force to contain the largest number of shadowspawn. Since they have to march everywhere, distance is a critical factor.

well tarwins gap is in the blight, so there are no official posts there since they would be immediately razed, I think its mostly just scouting missions that locate camps and then tehy guess that theres goign to be an attack. and since it is a very important chokepoint for shienars safety it is important they defend it to prevent flankings and other such attacks

Tarwin's Gap is the fastest and easiest method of moving Shadowspwawn into the heart of the Westlands, as they did in the Trolloc Wars
