I know that in the books, Jordan has all of the Asha'man using swords, but is that the official policy here as well? If so, I can deal, though Gavin's not exactly the swordsman type. Not with structured forms and all that. I've never been the biggest fan with the forms and the way Jordan/Sanderson has done them.

If not, do we get any sort of leeway with what weapons we do use? Obviously a gleeman will have some experience with throwing knives, and I've always been a personal fan of a twin shortsword, or twin dagger, fighting style as well.

I can always carry the sword as misdirection and use something else if there needs to be some sort of middle ground. Besides, Gavin is far more likely to throw it at someone than anything else.

Not at all. Skechid's weapon of choice are Adder Stings, which are twin triangles coated with poison with a string attached for manipulation. I think I got the idea from the Eddings books. *shrugs* I've always used them. But you also have to remember, here at the BT, we generally use Saidin as our weapon of choice and even when we have to duel with weapons we make a sword of Fire or something. But yeah, feel free to use things you want.

Sword just are generally more common and thus everybody prefers to teach them. In the books you hear about all kindsa swordforms, but not twin dagger forms or anything. So, we generally teach sword as the weapon lesson of choice. Also, Warders use sword and nobody's really made Heron marked daggers or staves. *shrugs*

I could be wrong. I sometimes am.

It's sort of a yes and no thing. Yes, your character is expected to learn the sword. Unless you're a specialized type of warrior (i.e. pikeman, halberdier), it is the standard military weapon. If you find yourself suddenly in need, a sword is the weapon you're most likely to find to arm yourself. It's also by far the easiest weapon to form with the power. Fire swords and such. I would say as a Soldier, you are required to learn the sword. Not necessarily become proficient, or even know forms, but be able to hold it without eviscerating yourself or your neighbor (unintentionally anyway  ).

As a Dedicated, where you have more freedom to develop your talents and explore your own skills, you can also branch out with martial weapons. Axes, staves, guinea pigs, fruit cakes ... whatever floats your boat. My secondary Asha'man uses the standard WoT sword (the hybrid katana/longsword) since he was a Shienaran soldier, but my Storm Leader uses duel short blades. Nothing wrong with variety.

That being said, I would stick with a weapon that you could reliably use to defend yourself from a Fade or a Trolloc, alone or in formation with others. Something a little sturdier than duel belt knives.

Fair enough. The knives are for throwing, though for something like a Myrdraal, I was thinking the long daggers like Noal uses, or something along those lines. If any of you have read any of Jaqueline Carey's (sp?) Kushiel's Dart series, think dagger fighting like Cassiel, though somewhat less badass since he would score probably a 19 weapon skill using our system.

At any rate, I was just curious. I've never been a fan of how Jordan treated swords, so I'm exploring my options.

Thanks for the feedback.
