Good news. Stephen Fry is cast!

The true legend and British national treasure that is Stephen Fry apparently confirmed on BBC Radio 5 Live that he's joined the cast of the upcoming sequel to last year's "Sherlock Holmes" which Guy Ritchie is once again directing reports The Hollywood News.

Fry says he's set to play Mycroft Holmes, brother of Sherlock (Robert Downey Jr.) and a key power player in the British Government. In the books Mycroft is as, if not more so, intelligent and clever at deduction than his sibling. However he has little interest in the practicalities, preferring to remain a "sedentary problem-solver".

Fry joins the returning Downey Jr. and Jude Law as Holmes and Dr. Watson respectively. Noomi Rapace, star of the Swedish-language "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" film series adaptations, was recently cast in a key female role.

The key role of the film's villain, Professor James Moriarty, has yet to be officially announced. Filming kicks off shortly in the UK for release next Christmas.

The Villain has been cast!

In a surprising move, distinctly voiced veteran character actor Jared Harris has apparently been offered the role of Professor Moriarty in the upcoming "Sherlock Holmes" sequel at Warner Bros. Pictures reports Latino Review (and later confirmed by Deadline).

The 49-year-old British actor, son of the legendary Richard Harris ("Harry Potter," "Gladiator"), has seemingly beat out bigger name actors like Daniel Day Lewis, Brad Pitt and Russell Crowe who've all been rumoured for the villain role. Harris has acted and won various awards for his work on stage, in television and across many independent and mainstream movies over the past two decades.

His most notable roles of late have been as Lane Pryce on "Mad Men", the first season's main antagonist David Jones Roberts on "Fringe", the indomitable Captain Mike in "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button", and as Andy Warhol in "I Shot Andy Warhol".

His other credits include "Igby Goes Down," "Lost in Space", "Resident Evil: Apocalypse," "The Notorious Bettie Page," "Sylvia," "Mr. Deeds," "Happiness," "Fathers' Day," "Natural Born Killers," "Far and Away," "Last of the Mohicans," "Lady in the Water," "Extraordinary Measures," TV's "The Riches" and the upcoming "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy".

Guy Ritchie directs the project which also stars Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law, Stephen Fry and Noomi Rapace.

USA Today has just done a feature article on the upcoming "Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows" with a whole swank of new photos including the first proper still of Jared Harris as Moriarty.

The article also goes into details about the plot which "shares elements" with Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's 1893 short story "The Final Problem", the only story he had that featured Moriarty as a main character (he was only referenced in other stories).

Of course that story ended on one of the most famous moments in literary history with both Holmes and Moriarty seemingly falling to their deaths at Reichenbach Falls - Doyle killing off his creation which he had gotten sick of. A few years later though he penned "The Empty House" which resurrected Holmes and acted as a kind of sequel to 'Problem' - how much of that story will be incorporated here is anyone's guess. Of Moriarty, Ritchie says "Moriarty is one of the most famous villains of all time. But we didn’t want to make him a conventional character. The challenge was to still make him modern, believable. [Harris] brings a depth, a realism, that everyone was really excited about. He's very relatable.”
