Studying the young man for a moment Nights lost himself in the spring so he would not shower his anger on him.

 

“You can leave any time you like Kraken this is no prison. We are here to help you and be a family but if what you want is to leave then by all means do so.â€

 

Standing to one side Nights pointed east. “That is your best way out of the stedding and I wish you good luck Kraken.â€

 

Crossing his arms Nights waited when Kraken hesitated he gave him another opportunity.

 

“If you wish to learn and want to master the gifts you have been given then I will gladly teach you. I will not however be talked rude to and told how miserable you are here are we clear?â€

 

Without waiting for a response Nights turned and walk back toward the village.

Nights studied the young man for a moment before responding with a nod. “Very well then we will begin your training.â€

 

Leading the Kraken up a trail in the woods Nigths stopped when they had reached a small clearing. The day was warm and bright and the sounds of insects and birds filled the air. When the two were seated Nights began the lesson.

 

“The gift you have been granted comes with many advantages. One of those is an increase in your senses. You must learn to use this ability to help keep you out of danger and in everyday life. You will with time be able to smell others emotions which will help you judge if a situation is dangerous or not.â€

 

Removing a piece of cloth from his backpack Nights handed it to Kraken. “Tie that around your eyes. Eyesight can be deceiving and I will teach you how to reach out with your other senses.â€

 

Once Kraken had secured the blindfold Nights continued.

 

“Reach out with your ears and nose and tell me what you can discover that might be hidden otherwise.â€

Sitting down on the moist earth Kraken closed his eyes, and started to listen, truly listen .He could hear the shril call of birds of the bounding of dear that had been scared by rain spirits scent, of the soft stalking of a cat reading to pounce on a mouse.

 

 

Then he smelled, truly as if for the first time, he could smell he wolves, the deers fright, the cats suspense, but most of all he could smell fresh bread and new tilled earth, telling his mentor all that eh could he waited for the next lesson.

“Your senses will only increase with time Kraken and eventually you will be able to even smell a persons emotions and moods.†Kraken nodded and Nights rose. Leading his student up a trail the Ranger took him up the narrow path that led toward the lake. Nights had set up a campsite in a clearing not far from here and soon the two emerged from the woods to find a unlit campfire waiting for them.

 

“You will use your senses to find us some game to make a supper. Use only your senses and I will start a fire. I want you back here by dusk with your quarry in hand.â€

Rain spirit did just as he need to be done, waiting and listening, slowly he began to hear the elks gasping breath and the lumber in its steps, it sounded... no, well actually yes it sounded as if it were lame in one leg, as it struggled by Kraken struck swiftly taking out the front legs then backing off he waited for it to quite its struggle with death, once it was nearly done kraken thrust his saber through its neck. dragging the kill back to the camp kraken smiled, "Is this good enough?"

"I've seen bigger", said Lorelai and laughed. Kraken smelled of surprise and a touch of confusion because she was no where to be seen. To ease him, she jumped off the tree branch she was sitting on. Dusting her trousers, she stood erect and stared intently at Kraken.

 

"You're probably thinking either John left or he's grown very attractive in the last few moments. Unfortunately for him, the second one isn't the case." Lorelai was amused by John. "John had some important matters to attend to and he asked me to take over for him. I am Lorelai. I'm a Ranger of this stedding."

 

Peering to the right, Lorelai noticed Kraken's wolf companion. "Call him out for me?".

Lorelai nodded in acceptance. "It's been a while since I've tried sensing wolves. I guess I'm rusty." Lorelai could see the wolves' eyes peeking behind some bushes near by. "See, as your senses develop, the more details you can produce. At first, you can detect if there's someone close by. Either it's animal or men is irrelevant. But as you get to learn to trust your senses more, you can distinguish many things, like the person's or animal's sex, species, the distance between you, their size and their state of mind. The more you practice the more experience you gain."

 

Lorelai sat down on the ground and crossed her legs. "Why don't you start a fire and show me your cooking skills. Some say men can't cook. Lets put that to the test." Lorelai's eyes followed Kraken carefully.

Kraken gutted the deer and was having the time of his life, he muttereed about not having the right spices but when all was said and done he was starting to make venision with what he had, granted it would taste gamey but that was no big deal, he had eaten worse...much worse when he was in the militray.......
