Did Verin take a look?

Recommended Posts

I'm might be reaching but when Moraine was tested to achieve the shawl, she had the list of new-borns hidden (in a box?) on her that time. She was worried that someone would thumb through her clothes and find the list, thus her plans to find the Dragon Reborn. Did anyone get the feeling that Verin either peaked and knows, or perhaps already knew something was up involving the search? Afterall, Verin is the one who handed Moraines's clothes back to her after the test was completed.

Send me to the thread name if this has already been discussed thoroughly.

Did you mean Moiraine rather than Egwene? It's quite possible and it would explain how Verin knew for so long about the Dragon Reborn whilst Moiraine and Suian were keeping it quiet.

Even if she didn't see the lists Verin is so discerning in her duplicitous own way (outwardly vague yet she sees so much...) they probably gave something away in here presence without even noticing her, (or noticing that she, er, noticed...) If you see what I mean.

I certainly see what you mean. I'm curious if Verin was aware of other things concerning Tamra's knowledge too, of the fortelling or possible previous fortellings. What do you think?

I wouldn't be surprised if she somehow found out about Tamra's fortelling. However I think she is such a student of the ancient prophesies that she might have picked up on the coming of the Dragon reborn anyway, (i.e. all those false dragons appearing within a short period of time etc). Two Aes Sedai meeting secretly, whispering and generally acting suspicously probably drew her inquisitive nature too.

Verin couldn't have taken a look. The room contained nine people (Moiraine, seven sisters each from different Ajahs, and Merean who was Mistress of the Novices).

The seven sisters were busy performing the test with the ter'angreal (coming up for scenarios, maintaining the flows). It seems highly unrealistic that any of them would be able to rifle through Moiraine's clothing. First, Merean would notice, and if they have perception outside of the ter'angreal, the other sisters would notice too and act.

We know Merean did not look, as her being Black Ajah, would have likely have acted to kill Moiraine earlier than she did in the book.

Tamra did have sisters help her with the search for the child. Most were from the Ajah she was raised from (Blue) but it is possible that Verin was included in the search as well.

A much more simpler explanation is the oddity of Tamra giving a bounty to people born during a certain timeframe. We know Verin to be knowledgable, and I wouldn't put it past her to realize that Tamra was searching for the Dragon Reborn at that time.

That's a stretch. The only reason Moiraine and Siuan knew is because they were the only witnesses to Gitara's foretelling. Nobody else would have had any idea at that time. The money given to the mothers at the time would have been odd but I doubt anybody would have been thinking "Dragon reborn" just from that.

It isn't that much of a stretch. At least not for someone who has shown the intimate knowledge of the prophesies that Verin appears to have. If there was anyone able to do it, it was Verin. In The Great Hunt, she managed to take the Amyrlin's interested in 3 Tav'eren and conclude that one of them was the Dragon Reborn.

But then she would have known about the events at Tawins gap, the writting and prophecy from the trollocs in Fain's cell.

She said in TGH that she only put it together there and then when she said something about suddenly remembering Siuan and Moiraine stealing cakes together as novices or something.

I think Verin caught on to the whole scheme then. Moriane and Siuan then had to explain everything.

Verin is perhaps the most perceptive and intelligent character in the book. It's more than plausable that she could have deciphered whisperings and odd behaviours around the WT to mean that the Dragoin has been Reborn. Every 1000 years oe so something momentous happens, as a brown Verin would have known that there was another 1000 year cycle coming around. And she may have found out something out in Tel'aran'rhiod( she had the stone ring). Plus I have a suspicion that she entered the twisted door Ter'angreal and asked about the DR. I'd be quite surprized if she DIDN'T figure it out
