Freelanders Division: What's it all about?

Hi there,

I'm your resident Freelander Division Leader and you can find us at the Role Playing part of Dragonmount (more commonly known as DM) which is directly under the Organisation/Society boards towards the bottom of the site. (here's a link to our home board: http://forums.dragonmount.com/index.php/board,82.0.html)

As you have probably read in one of Barmacal's stickied threads, in Role Play you create a character that is not you and you use that character to write stories with. This is done by interacting with other characters from other players (= Role Players, RPers) in an environment created for that purpose. That environment is called the Portal Stone World (PSW) here at DM and can be found on the Dragon Reborn boards on the site. As this is a Wheel of Time site, the PSW is also based on our favorite book series.

Now what exactly is the Freelanders Division?

Maybe it's best to start with a short introduction as to what a Division is. A Division is a group that belongs to the Role Playing section of Dragonmount. It is the home of one particular group of characters within the Role Playing world here on the site. There are different groups which all have their own Division, like the White Tower, the Black Tower, the Children of the Light and so on. Divisions are based on the type of characters that you can find there. Aes Sedai and Warders will logically be found in the White Tower Division, Whitecloaks will logically be found in the Children of the Light Division and Ashaman will logically be found in the Black Tower Division. Makes sense, right? Well, the Freelanders Division houses all those characters that don't have a specific logical home elsewhere such as thieves, pirates, innkeepers, maids, etc. But that's not all. The Freelanders also house a few groups that might be expected to have their own Divisions but don't at the present time due to several reasons that we won't get into at this point.

The Divisions are run by a Division Leader (DL) who can count on the help and support of their staff. How the division staff is made up differs for each Division depending on the specific needs of the respective Divs. All Divs however have a Second in Command (sometimes two even) in the form of the Assistant Division Leader (ADL) and one or several Bio Checkers.

For Freelanders the staff setup at the moment is as follows:

Division Leader: Mystica

Asistant Division Leader: Asfaloth

Bio Checker: Eqwina + Mystica

More indepth information on the Division can be found here

What characters can you find in the Freelanders Division?

Freelanders (or FL) are divided into 7 different sub-groups:

Freebooters: these are characters that can’t be easily chucked into one group. They are of different nationalities, have different allegiances, different views, different life paths, etc. These are the pirates, the innkeepers, the maids, the gleemen, the shopkeepers, the footpads, the loners, the royal families, the nobles, the poor, the fishermen, the carpenters or other craftsmen, the illuminators, the armies or guards, etc.

Kin

Tuatha’An (Tinkers)

Sea Folk

Aiel

Ogier

Sanchean

What kind of Role Plays can you expect from FL Characters?

That question is both easy and hard to answer as it is limited only by your own imagination but at the same time subject to the ‘reality of the world you write in and the character you write with’.  We highly recommend any starting Role Player to take the time and read the stickied threads on the boards on the ‘Dragon Reborn Planning’ section of the site. Especially this thread in the Biography board: http://forums.dragonmount.com/index.php/topic,717.0.html

The sky is the limit for Freelander characters. Whether you want your character to stay put in one particular spot or travel the world or have them do a combination of both, it is all possible (within the reality of the world, of course. If you take your channeling Kin character into Sanchean controlled territories then you should expect that your Kin stands a high risk of being made damane). You can roleplay highjacking Sea Folk ships as a pirate or a meddling innkeeper in Andor or a gossiping tradesman or anything you have a fancy on. There are RP’s that are restricted to characters within a certain group but there are also RP’s that are open across Divisions. For instance, Novices at the White Tower will not be found roaming the woods of Tarabon but they might come in contact with nobles from Arad Doman who come to the White Tower for an audition with the Amyrlin Seat.

Most of the RP’s that you will find are of the sort that are done between two or three players and these RP’s usually stand on their own though they do have an impact on the development of the characters involved. Some RP’s are what are known as ‘main story RP’s’. These are big RP arcs that are usually planned and organised by the Division Leaders with admin permission as these RP’s make up the backbone of the overall storyline of the entire PSW. This storyline is the background against which all other RP’s are being done. For instance, the arrival of the Sanchean in Randland will have it’s consequences for all other RP’s done in the land. No matter how big or small.

The Freelanders Division offers a huge variety of possibilities for a lot of different types of characters and storylines.

If you have any questions regarding the FL Division do not hesitate to contact either myself or Asfaloth or simply post them here and we will do our best to answer and provide the information you need.

Cheers,

Mystica
