Been reading it since December after WOT Gathering Storm.

Its been alright so far. Currently at "The Gathering Storm" of this series.

Alain and Stronghand/Fifth Sun are my most favourite followed by Sanglant.

Hugh is one deep anti character.

Anyway, just thought ill post a thread about it. No spoilers past book 4 please. :)

I have reviewed the series in full here.

I'd say it's a 'light' version of A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE. It's similarly true to the spirit and feel of the Middle Ages (although CROWN OF STARS is the early Middle Ages whilst ASoIaF is the late), it's based closely on real history (and unlike ASoIaF it's also directly based on an alternate version of Europe, as the maps make clear) and it has some interesting things to say about religion and sorcery. It's a pretty good series, a bit long-winded and probably at least one volume too long, but overall I'd say worth a look.

Sorry, hadnt logged on in a few days....

At the last few pages of 'In the ruins' atm. As for the series so far: after WOT, this is very different though it is similar in many aspects such as a general time frame and associated technology, magic and intrigue. It focuses on a lot lesser characters than WOT, fairly since its only half the size of WOT just comparing the number of books in the series, however u really get to know the characters and fall in love with a few. Sanglant and Alain are my personal favs. and more recently Blessing. [A quote when Blessing and retinue are held captive by Queen Adelheid, Blessing: I dont like you, so go away... LOL]

Its a lot of practical planning and politics and very realistic in those aspects....

I hardly have a personal opinion on the books I read, as I end up liking it no matter whose book or what its based on. But thats a short summary on what I think of the series.

I really enjoyed the first and second books, slogged through the third, and got half way through the 4th and got really bored. I just quit reading altogether.

I think the ideas were really good, had well-crafted religion and culture, some neat ideas on magic and heresy...but I just got to a point where I didn't care what happened to the characters anymore. I have a really high tolerance for mediocre story-telling and plot, but when the characters don't evoke any emotion anymore I just have to quit. The same thing happened for me with ASOIAF...*gasp*...I know, shocking because every sings it's praises, but I just couldn't make myself care about any of the characters anymore...they all just made me mad after awhile. I also need some encouragement while reading a huge series like that...in both series everything kept getting worse and worse, nothing got resolved, and there was freaking NO hope (that I could find). I need a little sliver of hope to keep me going!

Don't let this discourage you from reading it, everyone is different and I'm sure this will appeal to many readers, just not me. I just needed to throw in my take of the series.

Yeah I agree with you. As much as I love a few amazing characters in the crown of stars, its frustrating how many loose ends there always is. The darker characters always get away with it and it is very realistic but thats also the problem. None of the characters do anything drastic or take a bold step to resolve an issue. But yeah, I just have to find out whats gonna be the fate of all the loved ones in the book. And this is jus the negatives of the series. Its a good read nevertheless.

After a long while, as I kept putting off reading it for quite a few times as it did get a little irritating inbetween, finally got through it tonight. And I loved the way it all ended.

Its just that Alain has left me moved in a very very subtle way, like no other character has. Its something that cannot be explained, where he leaves u saddened, happy and peaceful at the same time. Anyone have thoughts on him? I am not familiar with Christianity or any religion, but the book is heavily based on Christian history and I was just wondering if Alain is in some way Jesus?
