If it really is BF, maybe Demandred did it? After all, the DO asked him if he was going to use BF for him and Demandred smiled. I have never seen anyone evil use balefire against Rand after LoC. However, the idea seems plausible. Nobody really knows what BF can do to the Pattern.

 

We do know what BF does to the pattern, courtesy of RJ in interviews. Massive use of BF can and will unravel the pattern. That's why both sides agreed to never use it again in the War of Power. Even the Forsaken really don't like using BF. EXTREMELY hesitant to use it. As a matter of fact, they've only used it in retalliation of it being used against them(case in point, Rahvin for example).

 

So the DO doesn't want the Pattern unravelled.

The DO DOES want the Pattern unravelled. Hence why he asked Demandred if he'd be willing to use BF. The reason the Forsaken don't usually use it or refuse to use it is that they actually want a world left to rule. The DO is the father of lies and most of the Forsaken think that he just wants to take over the world and will let them rule it. Moridin is the only one who really seems to know what's going on - that the DO wants all existence to end. If the others knew, they probably wouldn't want to follow the DO because they'd know that if he succeeds everyone (themselves included) is going to cease to exist - that's the same reason they don't use BF. So Moridin is the only on the DO's side as far as wanting it all to unravel, because with all of his philosophical stuff he finds living to be weary and thinks that it would be better if existence just ended - pretty much he's suicidal on a world-level scale. That's the point that Rand got to in VoG also - he thought it would be better if everything was gone.

This may be a small thing but Aginor almost balefired Rand at the cleansing but was killed by Elza before he could release.
