I have three hundred dollars to spend this weekend!

The govenor is up for re-election this fall, so he is giving each teacher a hundred dollar gift card to spend on classroom supplies. My school also gave me a bonus this year, in the form of a two hundred dollar VISA gift card. So I have three hundred dollars I can spend AND this weekend is tax-free in my state.

So I'm going to blow it all on my classroom. I'm planning to buy myself an organizational system so my desk doesn't look like a tornado hit it all the time. I think I need to buy some shelves too. I need clothes too. Oooh...And books!

I can't decide what I need!

Woohoo!! Have fun shopping Mumsy! :) I just had a smidge of retail therapy of my own in the form of a big pile of nursing clothing. Going to top it off with another baby-gear shopping spree later today. It's nice to have new stuff even if it's indirectly for someone else (your students, my kiddo).

Believe me, I thought about using my bonus money on myself. I could have gone out for dinner with my husband, bought myself some clothes, or even blown it all on costumes for Dragon*Con. But considering the amount of stress I had last year from lack of materials and being poorly organized, I think spending it all on my classroom is the best way to go.

Unfortunately, teaching is a profession where you are expected to provide quite a bit of the materials yourself and since I work at a charter, the budget is even more limited. I easily spent a thousand dollars on my classroom last year, and that was holding myself back considerably. I wasn't sure what subjects and grade levels I'd be teaching long term, so I held off on major purchases. But it looks like I'm being settled into the upper school's social studies program (I get to call myself the social studies department chair when I talk to othet schools. Isn't that nice?) so I'm more willing to start making major investments.
