Round 2, Tie 3

Molitva by Marija Šerifović (Serbia - 2007)

Serbia won at their first attempt (they had been Serbia and Montenegro previously). And a song in the language of the country singing won for the first time since 1998. It was a powerful and emotional song, with a gutsy performance.

vs.

Take Me to Your Heaven by Charlotte Nilsson (Sweden - 1999)

That ABBA feel exists with this song - something that Sweden brings out every now and then with their entries. The song is an up-beat song about love, with the singer asking her lover to take her to heaven by loving her. It scored 163 points.

Round 2, Tie 4

Hard Rock Hallelujah by Lordi (Finland - 2006)

Monster Rock gave Finland its first ever win - and the record for the most points ever scored. That was 292. The Finnish rockers showed that ugly could be beautiful as they stormed to victory in 2006. While I hated the song to begin with, it has grown on me a lot. Eurovision with a difference.

vs.

I Wanna by Marie N (Latvia - 2002)

Estonia won the year before and started the Eastern European grip on Eurovision. Scoring 176 points, it brought back memories of Bucks Fizz. It was a lively upbeat tune with feels of Latin America, especially that of Ricky Martin.

While I like Hard Rock Hallelujah, I must vote for Latvia's Marie N to end the tie so we can move on. And that means Marie N wins 2-1 and takes her place in the semi-finals.

Time for the 1st Semi-Final.

Semi-Final, Tie 1

I Wanna by Marie N (Latvia - 2002)

Estonia won the year before and started the Eastern European grip on Eurovision. Scoring 176 points, it brought back memories of Bucks Fizz. It was a lively upbeat tune with feels of Latin America, especially that of Ricky Martin.

vs.

Wild Dances by Ruslana (Ukraine - 2004)

One of my all time favourite winners, Ruslana holds the record for the most points scored by an individual - a massive 280. It's fast, it's frentic, it's furious! And it's cavemen and cavewomen! Throw in the fact it is a good tune that you just have to nod along to, and it is Eurovision success. Plus Ruslana has a great powerful voice needed for such an active song.

That is a 2-0 win for Ruslana who goes into the Final, despite myself liking both songs.

The next semi-final is on the way, for the last place in the final!

Semi-Final, Tie 2

The Voice by Eimear Quinn (Ireland - 1996)

Ireland made it 4 wins in 5 years as Eimear Quinn won Eurovision back for Ireland. Eimar had a fantastic voice, and it showed that Folk music can be successful at Eurovision. Very different, but a brilliant song. This was Ireland's last win.

It's time to wrap up this part of the "Eurovision Song Contest - It's A Knockout". I know it's a bit later than it should have been, but I would have done it this morning before work - except I had forgotten I was out of a training course!

In the 3rd/4th play-off, it is a 2-1 win triumph for Ireland's Eimear Quinn, as she beat Latvia's Marie N.

And in the Final, Serbia's Marija Šerifović takes her place in the Grand Final against the winner of the other leg of this contest with a 2-1 win Ukriane's Ruslana.
