This was Congress' response to Chinese faulty products.  Actually it is meant to protect our children from lead poisining and if you step back you can see it isn't all that bad.  Sure it requires companies to test products more thoroughly, but it means the kids are not getting sick.

There were 448 product recalls in 2007 which was a record.

Testing is going to hurt small businesses.  But that is just the cost of doing business.  You should not be selling products that could be harmful to children.

Tentative exemptions

While the Consumer Product Safety Commission administers the law, it may only be changed by Congress. Some exemptions approved Tuesday by the commission's two members, but not formally adopted, include the following:

Items with lead parts that a child cannot access;

Clothing, toys and other goods made of natural materials such as cotton and wood; and

Electronics that are impossible to make without lead.

I believe the last 'half' of those product recalls were because parents read a label that said 'may contain small amounts of lead' and freaked out enough, even though the amount of lead couldn't kill a bird.

Thats not even considering that the water you drink probably has more lead in it then half the 'shit' they are trying to 'recall'...

We have better things to waste our time with, Some of those 'recalls' were needed, but most weren't. Hell, remember that one about Christmas lights? Yea, the power cords of viruatally everything contains more then that 'level' of lead, because its needed to keep the cord flexiable. They say your not supposed to let kids even 'near' those lights. So yea, if you ever helped your parents with lights, you now got lead poisoning! o noes!

Yes, but it the snopes article is misleading, Rae.  When you read the clarification that is cited, you see that it is just as the Forbes article says:

The new safety law does not require resellers to test children’s products in inventory for compliance with the lead limit before they are sold. However, resellers cannot sell children’s products that exceed the lead limit and therefore should avoid products that are likely to have lead content, unless they have testing or other information to indicate the products being sold have less than the new limit. Those resellers that do sell products in violation of the new limits could face civil and/or criminal penalties.

As the executive director of the Thrift Shop Association said, the thrift shops will most likely throw out all the merchandise that they cannot be sure does not contain lead, because the costs of testing the items would be so high.

Half Price Books might be forced out of business with this law. At the least, it means their Children's Section will be removed from all of their stores. If Half Price DOES close, I think I'll cry a little, then start beating up politicians for fun and profit.
