When I found out that Brandon Sanderson would be writing A Memory of Light, I went out and bought Elantris just to get a feel for his writing style. (I still haven't read Elantris so no spoilers, please.)  I was just curious to find out if anyone else did this.

Elantris felt and read like a first time published book, which I think it was. I wouldn't gauge him off that one book even though I thought it was good, just not great.  I found the mistborn series to be excellent. The characters and the plot had a lot more depth than Elantris in my opinion.

A few months back Tor gave Mistborn as one of the free e-books.  I got it and read it then.  It was good.  It definetly made me want to go out and buy the rest of the trilogy, which now that the last one is out I may do, after my Christmas spending splurge.

I got the free download of Mistborn with TOR - and found it brilliant.

I then read a draft version of Warbreaker he had up on the site - which I really likes.

I then bought Elantris - and found it very good. Very to the point.

Bought Mistborn 2 a few months ago, and thought it was really good.

So I'll be getting Mistborn 3 when I'm finished my curent WoT re-read.

I got Elantris from the library the day he was announced as the AMoL author; now I've got it on my Amazon.com list for when I get some spare cash. I agree with Urubus that it was a good 'first book', not without flaws but interesting and gave me confidence that he could handle Jordan's opus sufficiently well.

We got Mistborn for free (signed!) at Dragon*Con, have picked up The Well of Ascension since then, and are currently having trouble locating the third book in a local store. I haven't read those yet, but Zorina is partway into Well (and struggling; something about his style in these is maddening).

I bought Elantris and read Mistborn from the library.  I agree, Mistborn is much better than Elantris (though there is one plot development I'm not a fan of).  Elantris is still good; however, in my opinion, it's not a book I would buy if I had to make the choice again.  A lot of the joy of reading it the first time comes out of not knowing what comes next, but it's not really written in a way that makes me want to reread it over and over, like WOT.  Mistborn, on the other hand, is more of that type of book, which doesn't rely solely on the twists and turns of the plot to engage the reader.

Didn't overly enjoy Elantris.  It wasn't bad by any means but it just didn't grab me.

Mistborn and the Well of Ascension on the other hand were good enough that I went out the other day and bought the third book in hardcover, an honor I formerly reserved for RJ and Terry Pratchett.

I have Warbreaker (from Tor) but haven't gotten to it as yet.  I'm half tempted to print it out as I hate sitting at the computer when I am at home.  I do that all day in my stupid office.

to RAT and all our bretheren outside the standard shipping lanes, you can buy a downloaded version of just about anything (expect WoT for some reason) from a company called mobipocket

http://www.mobipocket.com

- in about a dozen different languages.  They are not cheap, but no more expensive than the hardcover of softcover versions that have been released.

All three Mistborn boooks are available.

Mmm, Elantris was ok, but it stumbled along in parts, and the ending was a bit predictable--not to mention sudden. That being said it also showed a mind capable of dealing in subtlety, which was more what i was looking for--RJ layed out the plot of aMoL, its more styles that were significant, and stylistically Brandon was good fit with RJ.

That being said i probably wouldn't have continued to read Brandon's stuff except that I'd already bought Mistborn--and im so glad that i did. Mistborn is awesome series, one which i place in my top ten, and in which Brandon seemingly caught his stride as a writer. The depth, the political intrigue, the character interaction, the mythology and worldbuilding were all amazing--and i loved the power system.

After that I read both Warbreaker and Alcatraz, and really enjoyed them both. So ultimately i say go for it... his stuff is good.

I have not bought any of Brandon's books yet, though I might get at least the Mistborn series when I finish Wheel of Time.

Agreed.  There was a lot of build-up, and then everything was over quickly in a chapter or two.  It left me feeling almost dazed, a "that's it?" sort of feeling.

Have yet to read Elantris but did buy the first 2 books in the Mistborn trilogy. Found them both to be very compelling reads, with great character interactions and a truly unique magic system. All of which is set in a fantastic world filled with political intrigue and age old mysteries.

My fears about having another author complete RJ's great work are somewhat put at ease after reading Brandon's books. He's a great author in his own right and I think he's a great fit to finish aMoL.
