Cowardice

That's right, I 'said' it. I find that some people in the WOT series are, for lack of a better word, cowards.  Unwilling to defend themselves so they just do what they are told.  Egwene used to be one of those characters, since she became Amyrlin she has developed some guts and she only takes sh*t from Lelaine and Romanda to further her own plans.  I'd like to bring out exhibit 'A', the Aes Sedai and Wise Ones.  The Aes Sedai act arrogant from the word go yet when they are put in the Wise Ones' control they quiver up and do as they are told.  As we know, the Wise Ones don't determine hierarchy by the individuals' ability to channel, instead it's based on some mysterious factor that we don't know about.  Anyway to get back on topic the Wise Ones basically have their way with the Aes Sedai and don't put up a fight.  There are other examples in the books as well but I thought of this one first as it is from the book I'm reading currently.

I think youd be scared shitless too if you swore fealty to a man that can channel, after the world was tormented by that for 3000 or something years. Then you get put under people you think of as savages, and they think of you as apprentices, and dont refrain from switching you. I get your point though, a few of them are cowards in ways i cannot justify.

I think he was also refering to scenes earlier when the Salidar Aes Sedai were meeting the Wise ones...

 

Though to be fair the Aes Sedai were technically meeting the Wise Ones on their home ground.

 

But I do agree with you on the fact that "cowardice" (or lack of guts) seems almost endemic compared to our society. Individually many characters in the series are courageous but there seems but what I would call a lot of institutional cowardice.

aCTUALLY, ITS PRETTY CLEAR THAT wISEONE PECKING ORDER IS BASED ON "sTRENGTH OF cHARACTER".  Thus Sotiela (sp?) and Cadsuane would roughly be equal (and in fact see each other pretty much as equals) even thou Cadsuane is quite strong in the power and Soliela is not.
