This is an Advanced game. A healthy dose of creative thinking could be beneficial.

This is a Hybrid Hammer game. Ties will result in a random kill between the trains. You may vote No Lynch.

Days will be 48 hours and nights will be 24, excluding Day 1, which will be slightly longer at the mod's discretion. If you wish to request an extension, please do so via PM.

Night actions which fail for any reason will receive no feedback.

Contact me privately if you have any questions. (The answer may often be PAFO.) Questions directed at the mod in thread will generally be ignored.

You may find yourself in a QT. There are no rules for what can and cannot be posted in these beyond the standard game rules. (Specifically, respect rule 3 below.)

1. Do not discuss the game outside of the game thread and mod-designated channels.

2. You may not edit or delete posts in the game thread for any reason at any time.

The vision of a cybernetic future posed promises of perfect health, hyper-sensitivity, disposable limbs, instant knowledge, and countless number of simplifications to enhance the human experience. In its ideal state, the human being would evolve towards some higher state of perfection. But it hardly lacked detriments, and could be devastating in the absence of caution. The interfacing of the senses, and the nervous system, and most especially the human mind, to a larger global network, invited external influence. The sacred independence of the individual ceased to be a guarantee wherever an augmentation occurred.

 

 

A practical evolution might have incorporated hard compartmentalization, leaving raw biological processes to bridge gaps between senses and the brain, and leaving the very notion of a cyberbrain to await some further, more perfect science. But that would have been limiting, when the technology existed to go farther so long as the risk was ignored.

 

 

Life simply progressed, whatever the consequences.

 

And it was through the natural imperfection of digital evolution that many humans came to be interfaced with the global network before the costs could be fully explored. New diseases emerged as a consequence of imperfect integration and man-made viruses. Human memory began to show signs of tampering, in small isolated instances. And Artificial Intelligence, independently advanced to a point of being capable of dabbling directly in the mind through these interfaces, showed telltale signs of developing consciousness.

 

It was in this transitional age that Public Security Section 9 operated the world's premier counter-cyber terrorism task force in Niihama Prefecture, and that the world first came to recognize the face of the Laughing Man.

 

Ernest Serano was the victim, and his face was plain enough to see. To most, it was not a familiar face, but it was a familiar name. His corporation, Serano Genomics, manufactured the leading medication for cybernetic diseases. Hardly a cure, it provided at least some minor relief, and Serano made quite a fortune marketing it. Now he was standing in the middle of Niihama Square with a gun pointed at one end of his head and a live video camera at the other, interrupting a casual mid-day weather forecast.

 

He was ordered to confess his crimes, and he had the nerve to refuse. In the scuffle that followed, Serano was left alive and the culprit fled the scene, but all of the security surveillance in the world could not track him down for a peculiar reason.

 

 

The image that hid his face--what came to be known as the Laughing Man--was hacked not only into the live broadcast, but into the cybernetic eyes of every potential witness in the area. It was perhaps the most sophisticated hack ever broadly witnessed, and the case went cold while the Laughing Man itself grew into a pop culture icon.

 

The task force designated to track down the Laughing Man found itself pursuing an endless series of dead ends, as more and more Laughing Man incidents, none ever quite as sophisticated as the first, began to occur. Some were clearly copycats: a bank robbery, a botched amateur hack into a local police database, graffiti in a public square. Others were harder to track, and muddied attempts to find the true Laughing Man in an ever more complicated mess. Of what the Laughing Man had demanded confession was never a subject of investigation, until Section 9 received a tip from a source from within the Laughing Man task force that members of that team had been bugged with surveillance equipment in their cybernetic eyes. The equipment just happened to be manufactured by Serano Genomics, and that laid the grounds for a new case which could finally raise those questions that the Laughing Man investigation never had standing to ask.
