Dear Everyone,

He has gone where pain and suffering are no more.

Whenever he was able to be at the computer, he checked the blog first thing. Your e-mails REALLY MATTERED to him. He loved them ... and I think in some sense he loved you all.

I never thanked you for all my birthday messages, but I do now. We had a nice party...about a dozen people, ranging in age from 4 months to 82 years, sitting around the dining room table which had been covered with lots of newspaper, picking our own lovely boiled local shrimp, eating corn on the cob and homemade biscuits , and later eating watermelon; a good deal of white wine went down our gullets, too. I should add, no cooking was done by me. My dearest first cousin, also named Harriet (we're both named for her mother), did it all, just about.

It was a happy time. Jim made it so.

He came like the wind, like the wind touched everything, and like the wind was gone.

These are words Jim said to me several books ago, in the weary but always thrilling hours of putting the manuscript to bed, ready to carry to New York in the morning -- I remember grabbing a piece of discarded script and scrawling those words up the margin, because they were so beautiful. He was talking about Rand. I of course am not.

I know he touched all of you. Thanks for being there.

Here is his final interview, given to the local newspaper. Notice the date:

Robert Jordan aims to get back on feet

By Bill Thompson

Thursday,September 13, 2007

Jim Rigney intends to "keep marching to the horizon." Stage One is getting back on his feet.

Known to millions of readers as Robert Jordan, the best-selling author of "The Wheel of Time" fantasy series continues to cross swords with the rare blood disease amyloidosis, a progressive disorder he was first diagnosed with in December 2005 at the Medical University of South Carolina.

Subsequently, the author has been undergoing treatment at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn.

Rigney reports that with the help of the Mayo Clinic, he is keeping things under control.

"My numbers are still good, in the normal range. We will be going back up to the Mayo in about a month and we'll see what the status is. Now I just have to get my foot healed up so I have a chance of getting out of this wheelchair. Strange to think that my foot, of all things, would be giving me the most trouble. It's getting better, but unfortunately the amyloidosis makes healing go very slowly.

"When I get the foot better then I can start on the process of walking again. I hope to do this in another two or three months."

While there has been no improvement in heart function and no change in his overall prognosis as of June, Rigney says improvement remains possible. And he's determined.

"I've got promises to keep."

And he did march, guys. He marched toward that horizon until he crossed it, where we cannot follow yet.

The word now, the only possible word, is Onward.

Go for it. With love.

Consider yourselves hugged.

Harriet

I am but a lowly private in the army and I don't do blogs, however, I couldn't put this off any longer. The Wheel of Time series is one of the best I have ever read, they made me feel like I was right there in the story. The series has been like a friend to me, something to take me away when I am feeling the pressures of work. Mr. Rigney will be sorely missed, but I know that he has joined in on his own grand adventure.

thank you,

Michael Goldsberry

My sincerist regards to you and your family. Robert Jordon has found a way into all of our hearts and has helped countless numbers of people through the darkest of times. I hope that his books will continue to be a light in the dark to guide us and befriend us when there is no one else. Though he will be deeply missed, he will always continue to live on in our books, in our thoughts, and most importantly in our hearts.

I just started reading the Wheel of Time series about 2 years ago. I think I'm on book nine. I guess you can say I'm hooked. Your husband filled such a void in the genre for me and he will be sorely missed by his fans. I can only imagine the conversations around the dinner table, I would loved to have witnessed them. All I can say is thank you for your wonderful stories with their complex plots and great characters. They really take you out of this world and provide me the ability to escape my own for a while. Mine is not a terrible world by any means but it is so nice to enter into his creativity for a while.

My thoughts and prayers are with you Harriet as well.

The world is missing Robert Jordan. My prayer is that he found the Savior. I started crying when I read this blog even though I knew he had all ready passed on.

I know this sounds crazy to WOT fans who have known about this for some time now, but I truly just found out today that Robert Jordan passed on in 2007. I'm completely devasted!!! I'm still crying after reading Harriet's letter--you can just feel the love these two had for each other. He was such a genius. I"m only on book 7, but I can't imagine my life now without the WOT as a way to escape. I hope that the family is healed somewhat by now. Almost two years later, it might be an afterthought, but my prayers and thoughts are with his family.

Much love and respect.

Well, I heard about the first book from a buddy, and I started to read it and could not put those darn books down! This guy had a great vision on what life is because of what was taken from life! I am a Latter-Day Saint, whome which the new writier of the last book is also and there are many connections. Not to the Religion of course, but the fight between good and evil, shadow and light, love and disbelief. I am so impressed, I am sad I had not heard about Rand and Mat when I was in High School. I am 20 now and I can Say My favorite books are the Wheel of Time, and Always will be!

READ ON!

SHAI'TAN!

I know that this is late, but Godbless you Mr. Jordan. May you walk peacefully by the Lord's side for eternity. I thank you, sir, for the books you have written, and I wish you were around to finish the series. May your soul carry on my brother. Peace be with you. You as well, Miss Harriet.

Dear Harriet,

I know that this comes late, but I wanted to let you know how sorry I am for your loss. To us, the fans, he was a source of inspiration and entertainment through his work -- to you and your family he was infinitely more, and we can never understand just what this loss really has meant to you and your family.

I've been reading the series my whole life, steadily collecting the hardbacks the day they've hit the shelves since The Shadow Rising. I'm not even a fan of fantasy, I grew up following the Ender's books and William Gibson. I LOVE the Wheel of Time, though-- I was fortunate enough to meet your husband back during a book signing at the King of Prussia, PA mall. My Crown of Swords that he signed remains one of my most cherished possessions.

Thank you very much for your time, God bless you.

Sincerely

a fan

Being a new convert to Jordan’s “Wheel of Time†series and the fantasy genre in general, I am sorry to hear that he is no longer alive in the light to hear this, but it is something I had to communicate somewhere to him or fans of his work. My name is “Andor.†I work with “Amador†and “Lan.†We all work in a very small company of about 20 people in Elk Grove Village, IL. How does a statistical quirk like this occur in a writer’s seemingly fictional assignment of names of places and characters in a book? Of course, it added to my instant fascination and the intrigue of the books. Now I am on a quest for a bumper sticker that says, “Queen of Andor†in some striking gothic script. Thanks for letting me share…if not to Robert Jordan himself....to his fans. May the Mother’s embrace hold him safely in the light forever.

Wow - 2 year anniversay of his death. Time flies. My condolences to the family for whom time may be standing still and the pain remains real and heartfelt. It is not easy to move on, maybe the completion of the project provides the time to heal, but it is good too to remember. Especially today. Love can be a great irony. To love deeply and suffer loss, or to choose not to risk and love noone. I choose to love, for in love there is hope and fulfillment and peace. Life is worth the giving. What a gift these books are. What a mind. What a passion. What discipline and dedication.

Blessings to the family, and hope in a true eternity with the Creator, where for those that believe, the wheel of time will finally stop and we can enjoy reunion and peace.

I started reading these books at 14 years old. Now 20 and in the military, I still use quotes from them. I received the latest book while deployed. It brought tears to my eyes, as I knew RJ had passed and I had been heart broken, having lost someone who had changed my life in a way. Even while never really knowing the man.

I read the latest book(TGS) and felt a connection to my past. The person I once was. Memories of me and my brothers, engaged in heated and wonderful conversation as to what we thought would happen next and how to understand what had already happened. I miss those people in my life and though this simple book, a story, a fanciful lie, I found a connection to them. Our family has been passing the books on down as the younger children get old enough. It is almost a tradition now to read the series and re-read it until all knowledge has been gleaned; it gives them the ability to chat along with the best of us.

Please know that the man lives on, not only in Heaven, but in our hearts as well. In this way, his soul is at peace, and so are we.
