  1. Everything of any complexity is more complicated than the masses think. True mastery is making difficult things look effortless. If you have to start explaining why it was so hard, you know you failed. I think it's fair to point out that perhaps the writers were put in a no-win situation and maybe the failure is at a level well above their paygrades. In regards to fidelity being entirely subjective, that's a rather silly attempt to deny the failure by trying to break the measuring stick. Your continued assertion that this is a reasonable position frankly undercuts my ability to take your judgment on any related issue seriously. Even @Elder_Haman above acknowledged that of course it was possible to make a more faithful adaptation.
  2. So you are arguing that it would be literally impossible for a more faithful adaptation to be made? Frankly, you just seem to be saying that it's impossible and that only the smart people can even understand why. Without elaboration, I just take that to mean that you lack the imagination to solve the problems.
  3. But is Aviendha one of the wonder girls or not?
  4. Are you saying that the machine is so cumbersome and restrictive that the show creators and writers effectively don't have creative control of the products they are producing? They just turn the crank and something comes out? That's like saying that we have this sausage machine and because of the way we clean it, the sausage always comes out with a strong taste of soap. It's not our fault. That's just how the machine was made. Even if that is true, it just means that someone needs to get the power and imagination to break the machine. At some level, someone is responsible. And I'm suspicious that guy likes the taste of soap.
  5. I don't think they were able to track Someshta. Aginor states that they were looking for the eye of the world and tracked Rand and friends to find it. They didn't come to the eye of the world to find Rand and frineds. But Someshta was always at the eye of the world. Why would they wait for Rand and friends to get there if they could have tracked Someshta there at any time? In regards to Odin, I was speaking from a literary symbolism perspective rather than the in universe explanation. In universe, it might also be that we are living in an age that remembers Mat as the legend of Odin.
  6. I don't think there is intended to be a connection. The old ancient thing that leads Aginor and Balthamel to the Eye is Mashadar, not Mat himself. Other than that, what is the actual connection between the Eye of the World and Mat's eye? Just that they are both eyes and that there are some artifacts important to Mat that happen to be at the Eye of the World. I don't think there is any indication that the Finns had any role in creating the Eye of the World. The Dragon Banner gets dropped both figuratively and literally. But I don't really see much indication that it had much tie to the Eye of the World or Mat in particular. As was said, the Eye(s) of the World were supposed to play a bigger part in the original story, but I don't think that has a particular connection to Mat or his eye. Mat is definitely connected to Odin from Norse mythology at least by symbolism. One eyed man in a top hat with a spear associated with Ravens and having sacrificed to gain knowledge.
  7. Good satire is indistinguishable from earnest opinion.
  8. This is quite interesting. It's not the first time that I heard Sanderson talk about his misgivings about the fridging, but I hadn't realized the extent to which he is implying that major creative choices are being made at a level far above Rafe. Someone with a lot of power wants the story to be different.
  9. What are the apostrophes in the old tongue supposed to mean? Are they guttural stops, pauses, omitted vowel sounds (if so, which ones), or something else? Are they just added to make it look fantasy? How do you pronounce them when reading? Personally, I just read the words as if the apostrophe weren't there and assume that they are sort of added for "flavor." But I'm not sure that is the intention. Thoughts?
