In contrast Rand hardly appears at all, and one of the times he does it is with Egwene.

This is actually not true. I counted how many times they each appear during the trailer and their appearances are equal. The difference is there are 3 scenes of Egwene only and only 2 of Rand, and the one of Egwene coming up out of the water is clearly of great significance. That's not to say I Otdon't agree that they are clearly trying to play up the strong female vibes, and I totally expected that.

Otherwise, this was a great, very thoughtful commentary. One of the very best I've seen. Definitely something I'd expect from an elder Ogier.

    - Adding a bunch of modern-day swearing. (I just have a hunch that Sanderson would find this distasteful, especially when Jordan explicitly chose not to write one, single modern day cuss in a multi-million-word series.

Actually, 'bloody' and 'flaming' are British swear words (mild ones I think). But I guess they don't really sound like swear words so maybe that's why Jordan used them. I personally am 100% against using any other modern day swear words, but there are some that I think sound too stupid to include, like 'mother's milk in a cup'.

i seem to recall that rafe stated that he wanted to address poliamory,

He did, it was a Twitter Q&A over a year ago. He said that he was uncomfortable with the idea of polygamy (the way in which people commonly refer to Rand's 3 love affairs even though he doesn't marry any of them), and wanted to put it in the context of polyamory. (I am paraphrasing.)

Egeanin later on, mostly just give us a closer/inside look at the Seanchan.  Again, not really needed.

Why do you think we do not need a closer look at the Seanchan? I think understanding their culture is very important. They have a tremendous impact on the story.

For another, even when he does describe skin color and facial features, he uses expressive language that is vague enough that different people can get different ideas.

Sometimes, but often not. "As fair as any Andoran" is pretty plain, as is a bold nose, olive skinned, dark skinned, tilted eyes, etc. He was very specific about some, but vague about others.

And I agree about Goulekas. I am more optimistic than not on her, I just think it is curious she hasn't done more stuff recently given her pedigree.

Could be she took a hiatus for real life stuff. I don't know how old she is but it's not unusual for women in show biz to take some time off to have kids.

Also, the recent WotWednesday served as great, if very brief, affirmation of Pike and Harris in their roles!

Oh, I know, they were absolutely awesome! Rosamund hit the ball out of the park, and Barney was so great. He seems to already have Mat down pat, the way he even slumped in his chair as he read his line. Could totally see him as Mat.

Plus there were the other nuggets, like seeing Michael McElhannon at the table. And then the black woman with the braids turns out to be Nanna Agyei Ampadu, and it has been suggested that the guy with the white hair and beard is Stuart Graham.

I am looking forward to seeing onscreen all of the majorly important scenes that most WOT fans love. Heck, I love those scenes too. However, in season 1 focusing on tEotW, I want the tv show to really put forth the horror aspect of those dreams and nightmares in which Ishamael, aka Ba'alzamon, scared the bejesus out of Rand, Perrin, and Mat. If Rafe, his directors, and the actors can really show in the visual format just how frightening those constant nightmares are to those characters, I would love it. Doing so would help make a clear distinction between The Wheel of Time tv series as compared to other fantasy tv shows.

The nightmares will great to see if they can make them truly frighten-you-to-death scenes.

The scene where Lanfear peels the skin off the Darkfriend in the wagon and then throws the skin towards Rand/Egwene and company and inflates it in mid-air.

Eeew, really? I would have to close my eyes for that one, although it's not like there won't be plenty of other scenes that I will not be able to watch. Oh, I hope they DO NOT show Sevanna and her cronies tearing that other Wise One to pieces. (No Shaido at all would be fine with me.)

I can't wait to see Moiraine tell the story of Manatharen. I really hope they give us glimpses into that past when she does.

Galad  (I just want to see someone so pretty)   OOOH speaking of a whitecloak!! How about that Dark Friend gathering where you discover that one of them IS a Whitecloak and inquisitor!!!

Igtor coming back to the Light at the last moment and giving his life so that the others can escape. I bawl my eyes out every time I read that part.   Dumai’s Wells,

Verin's reveal.  (another tear fest) .

The Malkiri riding to join Lan with the Golden Crane flying again.

Or The moment when Rand finally after all that resisting and anger accepts his fate and is at peace with himself and what is destined to happen. His walk back down the mountain and everything coming to life around him. I cried so hard.

    All of these, definitely!

That is one of my favorite scenes! And then being saved and reunited with Lan. Chokes me up every time. But I hope in the show she is not so stubborn about allowing her happiness to show.  Being reunited with the love of your life is no time to be stoic--giggle all you want to!

Nyneave accidentally healing Logain and then realizing whoops, I healed a false dragon.

LOL! That would be priceless! I'm sure they'll show it, especially since Rafe said he wants to expand Logain's role.

I also hope they keep the scene in Caemlyn where Mat goes to deliver Elayne's letter, and he puts that flower in his hair. It's such a little thing, but it always makes me smile.

Oh, and I'm really excited just to see how they do the opening credits! It's not that important, but, at the same time, it's so important.

So many little things like that are part of what makes this series such a joy to read. I don't think I go more than two chapters in any book without smiling or chuckling at something.

Credits are a big deal! Look how iconic some have become like Star Wars (not suggesting WoT opening will even come close to that) and GoT. Those give me goosebumps. And then there is the theme to Harry Potter that almost everyone recognizes whether they're a fan or not. We hope WoT will be an epic show--it's music needs to be too.

Rand cleansing the power is a big one for me, and the battle in the borderlands where he just pretty much wipes out all the trollocs single handedly. I can never remember where it is but it's in either The Gathering Storm or Towers of Midnight. I'm sure someone can refresh my memory. ☺️

Rand falling into the palace gardens in Caemlyn.

Someone said Perrin forging an axe--that would be awesome. Just to see him in his element.

Egwene becoming the Flame of Tar Valon during Tarmon Gaidan right before she dies!

  9. My guess and my hope is Thom. I haven't seen him in anything else than GoT and Chernobyl, but a friend of mine described him this way: " McElhatton is famous for 'speaking with his eyes,' he's expert at the sidelong glance, the slightly raised eyebrow, the skeptical but always understated body language--in other words, no matter who he's playing, you just know that the character knows a very great deal more than he's saying or telling."

That just sounds perfect for Thom, and according to IMDB he is also known for his voice. No idea if he can sing or not. Also, any other male roles in episodes 1 and 2 are small parts, so thinking he wouldn't go for that.

So I guess I would break it down that I am:

Very excited about Mussenden, Dudman, Pike, Briesewitz, and Madden

Fairly optimistic about Harris, Henney, and Goulekas

Wait-and-see on Stradowski, Rutherford, most of the writers

Somewhat concerned about Judkins and Robins

    What do y'all think?

Karen Valentine Hendry, who is the casting director, has an excellent reputation in the industry, so I'm trusting her to cast well. I would imagine they got input from Harriet and Brandon on casting as well. Your comparison of Josha to Hayden-as-Anakin is worrying. He really was bad. I was always amazed they casted him. Anyway, I'll have to watch more of his clips to see if I agree with your assessment. Have you ever watched Nae'blis on You Tube? He watched all the movies that Josha and Marcus did, and he is optimistic.

I am not at familiar with any of Rafe's work because the stuff he has done in the past is just not my cup of tea, but we do know he is a huge fan of WoT, so I that gives me some degree of confidence. Not to mention the consultants they have on board, Harriet and Brandon of course, Sarah Nakamura (who says she's read the series 30 times and whom Rafe has been unable to stump her even once with questions of details from the books), and Bryan Cogman, who wrote some of the best episodes of GoT.

I am very excited about Nick Dudman being on board. For those of who don't know his work, his is best known for Harry Potter and Star Wars, Penny Dreadful and the Joker in Batman.  There was a post on FB (which has since been removed) by someone who has a friend who is supposedly an extra for WoT. This person said they are using prosthetics for the trollocs, which is true, is exciting indeed! I think prosthetics would be far preferable to CGI for the trollocs, and why have someone as good as Dudman if they're gonna use CGI for all the shadow spawn.

Karen Goulakes has done some amazing visual effects work, The Day after Tomorrow for one. I am not concerned that she hasn't done anything recently. I think we'll see some awesome visual effects with her in charge, especially when it comes to battles with the Power. Rafe has said he wants the weaving of the One Power to look something like the magic in Dr. Strange, and although I couldn't find anything she's done like that, at least it has been done so it gives me great hope it won't be cheesy. Maybe they'll hire Thomas Wright as a visual effects consultant to help with that.

Isis Mussenden has won awards for her costuming. I would imagine WoT would be a costumers dream job!

I think we have lots of reasons to be optimistic!

  11. I would like to ask Rafe, So what if Rand is in love with three women and they all love him? It's NOT polygamy because he doesn't marry them. Supposedly he's all for polyamorous relationships, so leave them be. And if they're so worried about people being offended by polygamy, does that mean they will do away with it among the Aiel?

And the idea that Jordan hinted at Elayne and Aviendha being romantically involved is absolutely ABSURD. They become first sisters, which would make that akin to incest! Now that's offensive!

Likely in two weeks at #wotwednesday . There was already a rumour of some bald actor who actually looked like irl myrdraal, but can't remember his name.

The last time he just asked for people to submit questions about Rosamund Pike. If he makes it that narrow, it won't leave much room for other news. I know production companies like to keep as much under wraps as possible, but I think it's time for Amazon to throw us a couple more bones!

    Half the series!! ?

  14. Totally agree about Moiraine. There's no way they're going to have her out of the story for 3 seasons or thereabouts. Which of course will mean they will have to create a whole lot of story arc for her that doesn't exist. I see her taking the place of some of the other sisters, such as the ones in Ebou Dar who are supposed to assist Elayne and Nyaneave.

I'd say Siuan already has a pretty big role with the rebel Aes Sedai. Would definitely like to see more of Elyas!

Anyway, the show writers know the endings for all the characters, so every change they make can be made with that in mind, instead of having to force the characters to fit the end of the story.

  15. Your point is well made, and I think all of us felt that to some degree, some more than others. But part of the problem was that the show outpaced the source material. Another problem was that D&D just apparently decided they could write the characters better than Martin did. As they were quoted saying, they did something because creatively to them it made sense, not because it made sense in the context of the larger story.

With WoT, the entire series has been written, so no worries about running out of source material. And who's to say that Rafe Judkins will do the same thing that D&D did? Of course there will be changes made, but is there some reason that they will be so large that as you say :

At some point the show will need to be more true to the show than the books.

I'm not saying you're wrong, just that I haven't heard enough to believe it will necessarily the case. Is there something specific on which you are basing your judgement?

We don't yet. My guess is most of the cast has been already chosen so it would be logical to have a big casting reveal for august #WotWednesday . Or they might just publish the cast irrelevant of the #wotwednesday , since by that time they probably have even more interesting stuff to announce.

    But who knows?

Given they are set to start filming in Sept or Oct (forget), I'm expecting to start being bombarded with casting news VERY SOON NOW! Or at least I certainly hope so. It's like announcing Pike was a tease, and now they're keeping the others secret.

One group that needs to get either expanded or dropped is the Seafolk.  Other boat captains can take their place.  also, the kin could easily be the ones that studied the bowl of the winds.  although the bowl of the winds could also be dropped.  The whole role of of the coramoor was never fleshed out entirely and the sea folk pretty much disappeared in the last few books.  although I do remember that Aviendha had a vision of the sea folk turned land folk, simply known as the folk.

So of the two options, you seem to be more in favor of dropping the Seafolk? I think they are an interesting culture the would be better expanded than dropped. Not to mention, for those who are concerned about ethnic diversity, they would all be very dark skinned.

If they dropped the Bowl of the Winds they would have to come up with another way of dealing with the weather. Fixing the weather is important. It is the second time the Dark One used weather as a means to harm the world, and both times he was eventually his attempts were overcome.

I like how RJ's relationships are true to life with their variety, and it is undeniable that her and Bryne have a bit of a role playing dominant, submissive thing going on. From him forcing her to perform domestic tasks to her letting him spank her on multiple occasions.

The only part of that I see as being a problem is the spanking, which they would cut anyway.

To say that her and Siuan could be lovers does not mean that they are spending any more time together on the show than in the books. This is obviously a path they want to go down, so, to me, emphasising an element already there, and with a character whose own romance is tacked on at the end, makes more sense than just making someone like Egwene gay, whose relationship intertwines with other events in the books.

I get your point about emphasizing an element that already exists. But although the actual culmination of Moiraine and Thom's relationship doesn't occur until Towers of Midnight (not quite the end), the feelings develop well before that; like I pointed out earlier there are hints in earlier books. So to have her and Siuan as lovers while at the same time developing feelings for Thom just doesn't work well to me. It feels awkward. Not to mention there is Siuan's relationship with Gareth, and both women end up bonding the men they love for their new warders. Assuming the show writers keep those two romantic relationships in the show, I think it defeat the purpose of including homosexual relations in the show.

Egwene making Gawyn her warder but not being in love with him would serve the same purpose to the story as their romance does, because that bond is just as strong as that between lovers. (He could still be in love with her though.) I have yet to hear anyone say they like their romance.

Either way, they would be making someone gay who is not in the books.
