  1. That's a good dichotomy, don't know if its manageable on the wide stage, but it is there...

I think you can establish that in the first episode you would just need to tweak the prologue a little, and really it would probably be the best entry point for those unfamiliar with the story.

Put Lews Therin and the Aes Sedai in our world several hundred years in the future. So the first 1/2-3/4 of the show is almost a space opera. The White Tower is in New York, London or somewhere familiar. Establish the people working on the bore to be from around the world. The break through it, and the male Aes Sedai go mad, where by they show world wide devastation. Lead back to Lews Therins encounter with the Forsaken. Then show Lews incinerating himself, creating Dragonsmount. Have the camera pull back until we are looking at the entire Earth all the while witnessing the devastation Tsunamis, Earthquakes, Volcanoes of fire and ash blotting out the sun, so all we see from our vantage point is a world of black smoke. Then show the Earth clearing up over the centuries, and ages. This is when they could have the intro of "The wheel of time turns and..." When the Earth is clear again have the camera show that the Earths continents are completely different and begin to zoom in on Two Rivers where we first see Mat, Rand, and Perin. Hopefully, when they make the show they try and disguise who the Dragon Reborn actually is. Doing it this way would be a good way of  letting the audience understand why the Irish are desert dwellers.

Of course the first episode done this way would be almost entirely the prologue, but I think it is that important because a lot of things are established in that one chapter that pays dividends later on. For instance when Rand begins to go mad without the prologue Rand is just crazy, but with the prologue we are not really sure what's going on.

  2. I'm pretty sure that this is just someone's dream casting. There isn't anything on the internet saying that HBO is going to be the company producing the show. It's probably going to be either Showtime or Amazon. As far as the casting goes far too many Game of Thrones actors on that list. Not to mention many of the people cast wouldn't even be in the first season and possibly not even the second.  Sorry, but this isn't real. You can keep an eye on https://plus.google.com/103674399065634804648 which I think is the unofficial website of Robert Jordan now. Whenever it is announced they will acknowledge it for certain on this site.

  3. I believe those with knowledge of the deal have confirmed that HBO is not the studio involved, and have showed zero interest in any other fantasy property as long as GoT is ongoing. And yes, Westworld is very much the show they are (foolishly, IMO) pinning their hopes on to repeat GoT's success.

The same sources have indicated that the WoT deal was for over $10 million, which is substantial for a book-to-TV deal. To my mind, the only companies realistically in the running to spend that money are Starz, AMC, Showtime, Netflix or Amazon. And I strongly suspect it's the Sony TV deal that was under negotiation before the Winter Dragon/Red Eagle situation blew up.

Interesting. Stars already has Outlander and Black Sails, so they probably aren't looking for something large and epic at the time. AMC already has 2 Walking Dead shows and the Preacher, so they likely aren't in the running either. Netflix is going to have 4 or 5 series in the Marvel MCU, so they will likely use their resources to attract a different demographic since WoT isn't going to attract many other people that the MCU hasn't already attracts. With the list you have provided I think the likely home for Wheel of Time will be either Amazon or Showtime.

I appreciate the update, but you would think if a network was going anywhere with it, stuff would leak out about their research, hiring writers, etc.  I think whoever owns the rights is still trying to decide what to do with them, and also waiting for Got to wind down as was said above.  If it were HBO, it would make a lot of sense for them to keep mum and also could explain why  theyve made pronouncements about when that series will end.

This would make sense to me.  HBO will need something to replace GOT.  I could see them doing each book, but clearly some books could be combined.

Most likely the show they are hoping to replace GoT is Westworld which starts next month.

  5.

I'd say it has a "Wheel of Time" feel to it, but not enough that the book feels like it is a carbon copy. I'd recommend it.

I gave up on this book half way through.Easy enough to read but just to simplistic and shallow in terms of character depth, believability and world building. IMO it in no way bears any resemblance to The Wheel of Time or Jordan's level of skill at writing. I'd love to hear what this "feel" is  as I couldn't even identify one thing in the book that even looked like the author was inspired by Jordan.

Avoid like the plague IMO

Eh, to each their own. I say it's a book not salmonella. Give it a try for yourself. I'm still enjoying the story, and would recommend it to anyone looking for a good read.

If you go into this book or any other book with the exception that it's Robert Jordan writing as James Islington then you're going to be disappointed.

  6. I looked, and couldn't find a thread about this topic. Though I'm sure there's one here somewhere.

Came across a new author who was influenced/inspired by Robert Jordan so I gave it a try.

The Shadow of What Was Lost by James Islington

I think the author tried to write a prologue with the emotional hook that the prologue in Eye of the World had, but it fell pretty flat for me, so don't judge the book by that one chapter. This book was just released about a month ago, so you don't have to worry about running into spoilers. I'm several chapters in and am enjoying it. Here's the blurb:

"Love The Wheel of Time? This is about to become your new favorite series." - B&N

It has been twenty years since the god-like Augurs were overthrown and killed. Now, those who once served them - the Gifted - are spared only because they have accepted the rebellion's Four Tenets, vastly limiting their powers.

As a Gifted, Davian suffers the consequences of a war lost before he was even born. He and others like him are despised. But when Davian discovers he wields the forbidden power of the Augurs, he sets into motion a chain of events that will change everything.

To the west, a young man whose fate is intertwined with Davian's wakes up in the forest, covered in blood and with no memory of who he is...

And in the far north, an ancient enemy long thought defeated begins to stir.

  7. I registered an account just so I could make a comment on this thread.

I spoke with Mr. Sanderson personally at ComiCon in Phoenix in June.  I asked him about the series, and when we would hear news, etc, and if he was involved in any way.  This was a few months ago, so I'm paraphrasing from my memory, but this is what he said:

    1.  Things are probably not as far along in development and pre-production as most fans would imagine.  He was doubtful more info would be revealed until an agreed upon/workable script was completed for the first season, and more of the people involved in the production agreed to (directors, producers, etc).

    2.  Mr. Sanderson is not in any way involved with the production or writing of the TV show.  He stated he had not yet been asked, but did not want to be overly involved even if asked.  He expressed a desire to read over the script(s) and story arcs, and would like to be a consultant and maybe give some feedback on editing, but did not want it to be a large time commitment from him.

It didn't sound like casting had even been considered yet at that point, nor location scouting, or any of those sorts of things.  To me, it sounded like they were still in the writing phases, did not yet have all the folks hired who would actually be involved in making the show, and were probably a couple of years away at earliest for any airing of the show.  I got the impression that it would be at least another year or so before they really did a lot of casting and were prepared to start shooting.

He couldn't tell me about the studio or any of the folks involved, or anything about the legal issues that were settled.  It did seem like he has a warm relationship with Harriet.

I wish the announcement was simply that they had required the rights back then. As opposed to their announcement of WoT being this huge cutting edge TV show, which makes it sound like they are much further along than what you just mentioned. Though considering the long break since that announcement I kind of assumed as much. Right now I just wish we knew which station it will likely air on.

Thanks for the update, by the way!!

EDIT: I went back and reread the announcement. Funny because I remember it being a much longer announcement than basically just the size of a tweet. Lol! However, they did mention this: " Look for the official announcement coming soon from a major studio". So they must have gotten tied up somewhere since we are going on 5 months since that announcement.

  8. I just want to know which network has the rights. That alone will let me know where I can place my expectations. If it's picked up by MTV or CW I know that I will hate it. If NBC, ABC, or CBS grabs it then it will get canceled mid-season if it doesn't carry the ratings they want. However, if Showtime, Starz, or HBO picks it up then we'll know that it will have a good sized budget.

  9. It was never the characters that I hated it was more what they were doing that I hated. I liked Perin and Faile, but her captivity dragged on for books, and was relatively uninteresting so I hated that. I also disliked the girls and the carnival segment because that also seemed like a pointless event.
