  1. Valeri watched this girl as she considered the question.  Truly, if she had said no, Valeri would still have pushed for her to enroll.  Channeling was a dangerous thing, and sometimes, there were women who turned her down completely, but they were few and far between.  Ellisha accepted the terms of enrolling in the White Tower, and Valeri saw in her eyes that she would prove to be trouble, probably very soon.  There was a haughtiness in the way she looked at her.  She hoped her first few weeks as a novice would take care of that, but sometimes, it took a bit more work.  At the same time, she had taken the position as Mistress of Novices for a reason.  Not every girl was jumpy and willing to please.

"You sign up right here," she said in an even tone.  With that, she stood from her seat and turned to the bookshelf next to her desk.  She reached up and took down an enormous volume, the Book of Novices.  She set the book on her desk, and as she leafed through its pages, she said, "In this book are the names of every novice to enroll in the White Tower since it opened, and today, well will add your name and information as well."  After a moment, she found the first blank entry and dabbed her pen in some ink.  "I will need your full name, place of birth, and your age."  Ellisha had already provided most of this information, but she would have to learn patience as well.

  2. Valeri listened to the girl's rather short tale.  After she explained what had happened, Ellisha threw one leg over the other before deciding that was all that was needed from her.  Truly, that is what Valeri had asked, but girls usually added and embellished at least a little bit.  Although, she had answered another question of hers.  Ellisha had been tested for the ability to channel.

"That's very good, and congratulations," she said, keeping her smile.  "You have been directed to my office to enroll in the White Tower as a novice.  As a novice, you will study history, logic, mathematics, literature, writing, and of course, the One Power.  You will not be allowed to channel unless an Accepted or an Aes Sedai is present to supervise you.  When you are not in class, you will be doing chores, unless it is a given free day.  If you are bidden to run an errand for an Aes Sedai or an Accepted, you must do that errand, with an Aes Sedai holding precedence over the Accepted.  During your stay here, you will be expected to follow the rules given to you, and if you are found breaking any of these rules, you will be sent to me for punishment."  She paused to let this sink in.  It was certainly a lot of information, and it wasn't even all of it.

"During your time as a novice and Accepted, I will act as your mentor and counselor as well as a disciplinarian.  If you find yourself at a loss or in need of comfort, being away from home, I will be here to provide that."  She smiled a little wider.  "Now.  If you are willing to accept this, and be willing to work to become Aes Sedai, I will enroll you in the White Tower.  Are you ready to accept this responsibility?"

  3. The girl sitting in front of Valeri's desk had the look of defiance and anger sprawled across her face.  Her pail brows were knitted in the middle, and her lips were pursed tightly in a pout.  Her arms were folded, shielding her from any further words the Mistress of Novices might speak about her departure today.  The girl..well, she would be a woman outside of the Tower, was glad to be out of the Whtie Tower, as far as her words were concerned.  Valeri could see the sadness in her eyes, though.  That feeling of defeat and rejection.  Clerie had been a novice for seven years, and had plateaued in her power...it was as simple as that.  She was defiant and mischievous, surely, but many Aes Sedai had been as well in their years in the novice whites.  By all accounts, she had been an eager and ready student, though.  She would have made a good Brown.

Clerie had already changed into her old clothes, and had the bags she had brought with her on that first day sitting next to her on the floor.  Her golden curls were held up with green ribbons now, instead of white.  Valeri always hated putting girls out of the Tower.  "Here is the promised silver," she said, passing the purse to the girl.  Clerie didn't look up, but took the purse.  "If you spend it wisely, it should last you a year, or until you can find where you wish to stay."

The two sat in silence for a time.  Clerie stared into space, pretending this wasn't happening.  A knock on the door snapped her back to reality, though, and her stubborn look faded away, leaving nothing but the sadness.  She let out a shuddering sigh.  "Whatever happens to me, Valeri Sedai, I'll always remember all those times I was sent to your office."  Even though it was a reference to discipline, Clerie smiled.  They both said their farewells, and the former novice let herself out.

Valeri held the door open with a flow of Air when she saw who was standing outside.  A girl with an extremely bored expression on her face.  She would almost say that her stance was...practiced?  Well, an unfamiliar girl at her door could only mean one thing.  "Come in, child.  My name is Valeri Sedai, the Mistress of Novices in the White Tower."  She donned a smile, knowing that this would likely be her first interaction with someone who wasn't telling her how difficult life in the Tower would be.  "Take a seat and tell me your name and how it is you came to the Tower.  I was just about to make some tea.  Would you like some?"

    3) Problems, ideas, etc

    Problems:

September was kind of a quiet month, but it usually is.  It's usually about the time where everyone starts to realize what the rest of the year is going to look like.  :P

    Ideas:

I'm thinking about starting a thread for novices and Accepted to kind of relax around the MoN...but not completely, just enough so they see her as a person...as much as she'll allow herself to show anyway.

News OOC:  We have a returning novice!  Welcome back Kenny and his character Venca!  Although, Kenny has said that he'd like to have her go through all the ropes before he rps with her.

News IC:  So, I know of two Accepted getting close to finishing their reqs...  :3

  5. Ay'Lira thought it odd that Liana wanted to talk about her problems, but then it hit her that she probably wanted to talk about anything but what was happening to her.  It probably wasn't the best way to approach things.  Ay'Lira didn't do so well when she bottled things up for too long, but with this happening so recently, she could understand.  "Yeah, that class is going well, except for that one student.  It's the usual.  Some of them are taking too long to embrace Saidar.  Some of them are doing just fine.  But that one novice is the only one who takes on too much every time.  But I think I've figured it out.  I'll try to explain the mechanics again to her, and tell her that if it hurts when she draws it on herself that it's too much, and that every weave we'll be working with won't require every ounce of Saidar she can take in.  Discipline is usually the hardest to teach."

She continued on for a while, talking about her day and what she thought the rest of the week would be like.  She watched as Liana sipped at her tea and tried to fight back the tears.  This whole thing made her really mad at her friend's mother, but there was nothing she could do, so she began sipping at the tea, too.  It was bitter, just like Liana had said, so she added a little honey and re-heated it with a weave of Fire.  It tasted much better after that.

The only thing she could think to talk about now was Liana and what had happened with her mother.  But she knew her friend didn't want to talk about it.  Maybe if she tried something a little indirect.  "Well...do you think you'll need me to cover any of your classes this week?  I don't mind.  I'll probably have to consolidate a couple of them, or get a sister to help out if it gets to be a problem, but I'll handle it if you need me to."

  6. Aureli felt herself blush in embarrassment when Kira complimented her work.  She accepted the water gratefully and sipped at it as Kira got ready for her last round.  She sincerely hoped these weaves came as easily to her during the real test as they had tonight.  She knew it was absolutely silly of her to think this, but along with this anxiety she felt for the test, she kept thinking that maybe when the test finally came, she would blank out a critical moment, or she would lose her serenity, but she couldn't think like that.  Thoughts like that would likely get her killed or failed.  And at this point, she wasn't sure which would be worse.

When Kira was ready, Aureli took her spot behind her friend and began her distractions.  Pinches, flashes, whips of Air, the usual.  She tried to mis things up and keep them as distracting as possible.  Kira pulled through most of the weaves, though.  She got to the ninetieth weave before her concentration finally broke.  Concentration was a very slippery thing to hold on to while you were tired.

"I'd say that wasn't bad for our first try with the distractions," she said with an encouraging smile to her friend.  "I think if we go at it maybe twice a month like this, we should start getting faster, and be able to hold our concentration longer, don't you?"

She stood up and stretched slowly.  She felt her blood slowly pounding through her body, and she wanted nothing more than to sleep.  "I think for right now, though, I'll just be glad that my first class isn't until mid-morning tomorrow."  She took one more cup of water and gulped it down.  "I'll see you tomorrow.  Sleep well," she said, still smiling, but tiredly.  Aureli left her friend's room and slowly walked to her own room.  She would have gladly curled up on the floor and slept there, but she knew her bed would be more welcoming.

    3) Problems, ideas, etc

    Problems:

I got a new job!  And getting used to it took a while, but I think I'm getting the hang of it.  :)

    Ideas:

I'm thinking about starting a thread for novices and Accepted to kind of relax around the MoN...but not completely, just enough so they see her as a person...as much as she'll allow herself to show anyway.

News OOC:  I think Saphira's character was cross-checked recently, and I'm hoping to see her soon!  Also, we have a returnee!  Welcome back, jozan!

News IC:  And since jozan's character had already gotten her reqs done before he left, she is now an Accepted!  We now have three!  And I think we're getting close to having four!

  8. Aureli stretched her back and her arm before getting a little more water.  She took in a deep breath and let it out before she decided she was ready again.  Kira was getting the hang of the weaves.  She wondered if she dropped the fifty-third weave because she was tired or if that was really when she had lost her concentration.  "I suppose one or two more rounds wouldn't hurt."  She smiled brightly at her friend before she sat back down.  Honestly, she was beginning to get a little tired, but she knew the real test would likely be much worse and much more draining than this.

Kira began channeling immediately after Aureli started.  She barely felt the first few slaps and pinches.  At this point, the flashes of light were the worst to contend with.  Physical attacks could be ignored with concentration and determination, but you needed to be able to see to be able to channel.  The blue-ish coin fell into her hand much easier than it had the first two times.  The second weave was easier, too.  Since she had done the first nineteen weaves correctly since the beginning, they were very easy too.  She forties with relative ease.  Her tiredness was just a little tugging in the back of her mind as she went through them.  She was able to keep the fatigue away with sheer will power, it seemed.

Aureli passed the fifty-second weave and made herself keep going.  She wanted to make it all the way to the last weave this time.  She hadn't consulted her notes this time like she had done the last round, but she was confident that she knew which weaves consisted of what.  They got more and more complicated it seemed, though, but that was all right.  She was able to sense where the threads were as well as see them just a little when the flashes came and went.  As she reached the eighty-ninth weave, she knew she could get to the end.  She would be tired to the bone, but she would be finished.

It took a certain discipline not to weave the last eleven weaves too quickly.  She was excited that she could see the end, but she made herself slow down to finish correctly.  Finishing the weaves the right way was as essential as doing them at a steady pace without losing concentration.  Now she was pushing herself through what had to be a bruise forming on her left hip, through the excitement of success, and fatigue that was beginning to make itself more present than at the beginning.

When she reached the last weave, though, she formed it with grace and a kind of reverence.  When the sparkling lights cascaded through the hair, she let out a very un-Aes Sedai-like whoop of joy.  By then , she was sweating, and ready to go to bed, but she had to provide distractions for Kira through her round, too.  Luckily, providing distractions was much less work than working through them.

After she caught her breath and stood up, she looked to her friend.  "I think I can distract you for one more round...and that should be about it for me..."

  9. Thanks!  ^^

And I know I just took myself off LoA, but this one should be a little shorter...

I'm going to an anime convention!  I'll be gone from Thursday August 22nd, and I'll get back Sunday the 25th, but I'll probably be too tired from driving six hours, sooo...I'll be back on DM for the 26th.  ^^

  10. OOC:  Looks good to me!  :)

IC:  Ay'Lira watched as Liana mechanically picked up the letter that sat next to her and handed it to her.  Ay'Lira read the letter and could hardly believe it.  The letter was short, hardly emotionally or sympathetic for what it contained, and the tone to it made her feel like Liana's mother was blaming Liana for her mental state.  She smothered the anger that threatened to well up and took her friend in her arms.  The sender of the letter wasn't there for her to fuss at, and fussing wouldn't help either way.  Right now, Liana needed her sympathy, not a rant about what was in the letter.  That would just make things worse.

"I can't tell you why..." she said.  No one was ever able to tell her why Malkier fell or why her father had to die, his body unrecoverable...at least not to her satisfaction. "But I can tell you it'll get better.  For now, just mourn all you need to.  I'll be here.  I can cover your classes, and you can tell me anything you want.  We'll get through it together."

  11. Providing distractions was definitely strange, but Aureli thought she did a good job.  She tried to throw them in unexpectedly, but with as many as possible.  Kira's stopping point was fifteen.  They were pretty evenly matched, then.  When Kira said she was ready to switch out, Aureli took another deep breath, looked at her notes for a moment, and then took her spot in front of Kira again.

The second time around was better.  She felt a little more accustomed to Kira's distractions, but she knew she would throw in new things among the flashes of light, pinches, and invisible whips.  Aureli felt herself slipping around the same place she had faltered the first time, but pushed through it, making sure she had the discipline to push herself instead of giving up because of anxiety.  She worked through the twenties this time, becoming more familiar with the movements and the rhythms of the weaves.  Because she had only one arm, Aureli had to learn different techniques to guide the weaves than everyone else did.  The movements weren't necessary, but the way a weave was learned was fundamental as to how it was executed.

Aureli found herself lost in her work and managed to make it to the fifty-second weave the second go-around before one too many pinches on one spot on the back of her neck made her stop.  She hadn't started the next weave, so there weren't any consequences like there had been the first time, when her one arm itched.  She helped herself to a glass of water and rested for a moment.  "Well, I'm certainly getting there...I feel like we're missing something, though.  If the test is so hard, the distractions wouldn't be this repetitive, but it definitely helps to work under pressure like this.  Are you ready for the next round?" she asked.

  12. It could have been because the door was in the way and muffled her voice, but Ay'Lira thought Liana's voice sounded strange when she said she could come in.  She opened the door slowly and peeked in.  Liana was staring out into space as if she had just been dealt quite a shock.  She wasn't crying quite yet, but she seemed on the verge of tears.  Any thoughts Ay'Lira had about chatting amiably about her unruly class flew out the window, and were replaced by thoughts only of comforting her friend, and helping if she could.  She rushed to her friend's side and sat on the bed next to her.  She noticed a letter on the other side of Liana.  Maybe it had something to do with the letter, but it wasn't her place to read the letter.

"Liana, what happened?" she asked gently, thinking that if she seemed panicked, it would only make her friend's situation worse.  She thought for a moment that this had something to do with her family.  Initiates were in the Tower for so long without contact with their family that anything could happen while they were away.

  13. Aureli waited anxiously, looking for Alia Sedai to open the door and announce her presence.  Normally, the teacher was there before the class, but she wasn't there today.  The class began to fill up, and still no teacher.  She had worked hard on her essay, trying to find reasons for the importance of the Blue Ajah.  Every Ajah was important, so she almost felt like she was repeating herself for part of it, but she felt satisfied with what she had produced.

Finally, the Aes Sedai walked in, ready for travel.  She even took the time to make sure her blue stockings were visible.  That made her smile.  One thing she did enjoy from the first day of class was the stories connected to the Blue Ajah traditions.  Alia Sedai asked for the essays at the door and instructed them to get ready for travel.  Bags were waiting for them it seemed.  Aureli hadn't ridden a horse since her last trip out into the city.  She handed in her essay with the rest of them, and chatted amiably with Kira as they went back to their rooms.  Aureli slipped into her white riding boots and threw her cloak over her shoulders.  She even put on the white riding gloves that had been issued by the Tower.

After she finished, she walked to the stables, wondering, like everyone else, what was in store.  Alia Sedai had hinted that they would be helping people today.  She wondered what she would find, and how she would help.  While she didn't think that the Blue Ajah would be the one she picked, the Ajah she was considering certainly had a lot of passion in helping the world, too.  She wondered what a prospective Red would do to help others without wrangling a male channeler.  She straightened up and gave Alia Sedai an enthusiastic smile when she walked into the stables.

  14. OOC:  This is Liana's Turning of the Wheel thread.  It has a character that is now Aes Sedai, but is going back to retro temporarily to be an Accepted.

IC:  Ay'Lira stretched and caught her breath as she walked the short distance from her room to Liana's.  The two had stayed friends after being raised to Accepted.  They might be picking different Ajahs soon, but that didn't mean they shouldn't enjoy the friendship they had now.  Every night after dinner, they met in one or the other's room to talk, plan out their day, let out some feelings they had, or just chat.  Today, Ay'Lira's class had almost descended into chaos as a novice had taken on too much of Saidar - again - and nearly burned the classroom down.  Luckily, though, she had been on hand to counteract the Fire weaves with Water and calm the girl down.  That had been the third time the same novice had done that, so Ay'Lira felt it necessary to send her to the Mistress of Novices.  She had kept her nerves from the incident down for the majority of the day, but she needed to talk to someone about it.

Arriving at her friend's room, she knocked and waited for Liana to answer.  Really, the knocking was just a formality between the two.  They didn't have a set routine on whose room the other visited, so knocking was a way of saying, "Hey, let's talk here tonight."  Sometimes one would be waiting for a while before the other showed up from business, though.
