Weekly Musings of an Insane Firebird--Wheel of Time Confessionals: Moiraine

Gabriel Kross

I would like to try something new this week. I am going to do my personal take on certain events or characters in the series. This week, I will be talking about Moiraine. I will cover stuff from New Spring through Towers of Midnight, so there will be spoilers.

I wanted to start with Moiraine for two reasons. The first is that she is one of my favorite characters. The second is that I probably would have lumped her in with Cadsuane had I not started with New Spring.

Moiraine is one of the few Aes Sedai that you get to see interact with people on a personal level without keeping up that serene mask, and it's quite refreshing to see. In New Spring, you get to see some of the childish actions in which Moiraine partakes, as well as why she is so serious about her mission throughout the series. For those of you who started with The Eye of the World, Moiraine was really the only true Aes Sedai you got to experience. Although she wasn't so bad, you sympathize with Rand, Mat, and Perrin about having to deal with a dreadful Aes Sedai. Then you get a couple of pages of Elaida right near the end and start to realize that things could be so much worse. As the series progresses, you get to see things from Moiraine's viewpoint and understand her more. I had a literal "oh, thank goodness" moment when she was rescued in Towers of Midnight; getting to see one of the most pivotal Aes Sedai return after thinking she was dead for so long is just awesome for lack of a better word. I am excited about the possible reunions that we may see occur in the last book.

I hope there is a reunion between Rand and Moiraine. I hope it is as touching and full of emotion as it could/should be.

When I think back to the way that Rand thought of Moiraine, and how he treated her before that scene in TFoH, at the time I thought he was totally justified. I really did feel that Moiraine was trying to push Rand in the direction the White Tower wanted him to go, not the direction the world needed him to go.

Obviously, Rand (and the rest of us) since learned that he was completely wrong about Moiraine. She had been trying to help him all along, in some cases even defying the White Tower, and her Amyrlin. She really risked everything for him: she risked Lan, she risked stilling, she risked others being stilled, she risked herself, her soul, and even the entire world to keep him safe and get him ready.

Her note to Rand nearly made me cry the first time I read it.

So how will he react to finding that she's not only still alive, but also completely ready to kick some Shadowspawn a$$? Probably very much like Gawyn will react upon seeing that his mother is still alive. Moiraine is the closest thing to a mother that the Dragon has. Nynaeve was Rand's mother-figure when he was still "sheep-herder." But it was Moiraine who birthed the Dragon Reborn. Just imagine how you would react to reuniting with your mother after believing not only that she was murdered before your eyes, but also having blamed yourself for her death, and believing that she might have lived if only you'd believed in her more.

I think we're going to see Rand fall to his knees to embrace her, and cry and ball like a little boy. Tears of Joy. That's what I hope that chapter is called.

And if the Fortuona is present when he falls to said knees, well that could clear another prophecy, wouldn't it?

Yes, I also hope that reunion is memorable.Rand still carries around a lot of guilt, maybe she will "heal" that hurt.

Metal, I'd just like to point out that Gawyn already had the reunion scene with his mother. It wasn't that touching tbh.

Ah yes, he did. End of last book, I'd forgotten. And it was somewhat glossed over, wasn't it? But Gawyn did react much as I described, fell to his knees and cried and all that. It would have been much more emotional if more time had been spent on it, or better yet if that scene had been a Gawyn POV. I hope the Rand/Moiraine reunion will be a Rand POV.

But Gawyn and Morgase are not central characters. Rand and Moiraine both are. I think (hope) their reunion will be a much bigger deal.

@metal head

rand was not completely wrong about moiraine, she did manipulate him.

look at the situation from rand pov: his advisor is always keeping her cards

close to her chest, the only information he gets is on a need to know basis,

in the first three books he basically was her puppet.

the first real shift of power happened when rand took his entourage to the aiel

waste instead of conquering illian.

in the fires of heaven i was expecting a change in their relationship, a change for the better, maybe a more balanced one.

the confrontation with lanfear took me completely by surprise!!!!

so instead of a better rand-moiraine team,we got that...that dreadful grandmother from hell cadsuane baaaaahhhhhhhhhhh.

to tell you the truth,if i was in rand shoes,i'll greet not only moiraine with

open arms, but probably padan fain too, just to get rid of that woman.

I cannot WAIT to see the Moiraine/Lan reunion, and of course her reaction to everything that has happened. Can't wait to see how the whole Moiraine/Thom thing goes down with the rest of them too.

:P

Oh yes, definitely. Down with Cadsuane, off her high horse and her history and reputation and so on, so forth.

I wonder what it will do to Rand's list, wasn't Moiraine always at the top of that list? I think Nyneve's will be the most interesting reaction. Through the first few books, Nyn's whole reason for going to the White Tower was to pay Moiraine back for dragging everyone out of Two Rivers, then all the drama with Lan. Nyn should beg Moiraine for her forgiveness.

That list no longer matters, as his epiphany cancels it, being the product of his insanity anyway... even so MASSIVE surprise. Nynaeve will at first be worried about Lan, but there are indications that Moiraine knew and approved of Lan and Nynaeve's relationship after her trip into Rhuidian. It seems that Moiraine arranged it that way so that Nynaeve would learn what she needed to learn to become an Aes Sedai and in doing so, stand up to Myrelle. That scene was pretty good, but imagine if Nynaeve had gone to Myrelle earlier to get Lan's bond in say ACoS? Disaster!! Lol
