Afrikaans would be a cool language to learn

 

It's incredibly easy. No conjugation law's, sentence construction is very formulaic, spelling is phonetic, alphabet is roman.

 

Essentially take a language (Dutch) separate it from the original speakers, teach it to a bunch of people (slaves and indentured workers) who have no taste or knowledge of a western language and it becomes incredibly simple.

 

Really, the people who complain about Afrikaans being hard have no idea about the complexities of other language (I know enough from french - written and oral)

 

I want to learn Arabic too

 

Very cool. But with the different writing system. But it is nice to see how languages and cultures evolve. Japanese is very concise sentences leave as much to context as possible, English is very much about complexity and implication, I'm told Arabic stresses differences between genders (plus the very cool Hebrew like root words)

 

But I should probably start with Chinese or Spanish.

 

Can't say anything about spanish but Mandarin is tonal Its a different kind of language completely

I really enjoyed it, but then again I know enough of internet culture to at least appreciate a bit of what the stuff might mean

 

I think it went over some of the guys' heads, definitely over a lot/all of the parents
