Wise Ones Dreams

Everyone knows about the viewing or foretelling of Rand in a boat with three women. I had always imagined it was a figurative viewing in that Min, Avhienda, and Elayne would be ferrying Rand to his death or recovery from a mortal wound. It seems to be a pretty important viewing but almost too vague.

In my re-read of Lord of Chaos, in Chapter 19 "Matters of Toh", Avhienda freely tells Rand about a series of dreams the Wise Ones have had concerning him. She says they dreamt of him on a boat with three women, who's faces cannot be seen. There is a mention of scales tipping one way and then another. This is making me think that this might be an actual event, not a figurative one. But what cause would the Dragon Reborn have for being on a boat? Could the Athan Miere be escorting the Coramoor north along one of the rivers running through Randland when a Forsaken strikes? Could they be ferrying him back after the last battle and something has caused the One Power to cease working, thus requiring the use of a ship? Is there time in the series for Rand to set sail for Seanchan, seeing how he cannot travel to a place he has not been too? He is a resourceful character so I think the need for him to be in Seanchan would allow him to create a gateway, so I doubt the Seanchan are involved.

The other dream is of a man with a dagger at Rands throat, though he cannot see the man. To me, this is clearly Fain, or whatever he calls himself now.

The final WO dream is if Rand splitting Randland in half with a sword. Either he wields Callandor and uses it to stop the Seanchan or he makes a pact to give Seanchan the territory they have already seized in order to gain the peace he needs for the Final Battle. There is a specific mention of a sword, something abhorred by Aiel, so whatever his device for splitting the continent in half displeases the Aiel greatly.

Anyway. I know that this forum is rife with half baked theories and im sure im not the first to notice this, but i find it peculiar that a boat is mentioned twice, once by a people very unfamiliar with the term. It seems to me that the boat is of some significance, but what i can't even begin to imagine. We have two books left which leaves us almost no time for a significant oceanic voyage, which leaves the Sea Folk by elimination...

What do you think?

Three women on a boat: think King Arthur. More specifically, his death. In some versions, after being mortally wounded, he was taken to Avalon on a barge by three queens. A lovely example is Tennyson's Idylls of The King:

Then saw they how there hove a dusky barge,

Dark as a funeral scarf from stem to stern,

Beneath them; and descending they were ware

That all the decks were dense with stately forms,

Black-stoled, black-hooded, like a dream--by these

Three Queens with crowns of gold: and from them rose

A cry that shivered to the tingling stars,

And, as it were one voice, an agony

Of lamentation, like a wind that shrills

All night in a waste land, where no one comes,

Or hath come, since the making of the world.

Others have mentioned Egwene's use of a barge for Skimming. If that's what the WO dream was about, it suggests that Egwene (the Dreamer) not Min (the Viewer) is one of the three women.

The other dream is of a man with a dagger at Rands throat, though he cannot see the man. To me, this is clearly Fain, or whatever he calls himself now.

Rand can see Fain, but Fain may be disguised so that Rand does not know he's there. Other possible interpretations treat this dream as more metaphorical; 'holding a knife to his throat' might indicate a threat of some kind, and Rand not seeing him may mean he's not aware that someone in his near companions who he thinks he can trust and rely on is the source of the threat. As for whho that might be, take your pick! I vote for Bashere, personally..

Again this might be metaphorical; or it might refer, not to Callandor, but to the sword Rand now carries, which apparently is Hawkwing's sword 'Justice'. And if he uses that either in battle or to impress Fortuona (mslf) the Aiel may not be happy with their Car'a'carn.

Anyway. I know that this forum is rife with half baked theories

What?? Surely not! Not here!:wink:

To me the Sea Folk have been a bit under-used by the Forces of the Light. I know Rand pointed out to them that carrying cargo to famine-struck lands was an urgent necessity, but I think they saw their service to their Coramoor as being, well, more active. There is still the Jendai Prophecy to be fulfilled, after all.

I dont see anything about the first one that nobody has mentioned yet but the man with a dagger at Rand's throat has always seemed like Taim. He's surely been trying to kill Rand for a while and Rand seems almost blind to him.

The last I think is the split of Rand and Seanchan conquered nations. Figuratively splitting the land in half by the sword.
