Eurovision Song Contest 2010 - The Grand Final (Saturday 29th May 2009)

Now, with just under 20 minutes to go until we head back of to Oslo for the 55th European Song Contest. I hope everyone is getting settled in, whether it is front of the TV or using the live streaming from the official Eurovision Website (you need to install something called OctoShape to get the streaming working, which is linked from the website).

Now is the time to get your supply of beers, wine, spirits and snacks. I'm pretty much set up and waiting for the show to begin.

Tuesday and Thursday saw the 2 semi-finals to find the 20 other qualifiers to go with Norway (the hosts and champions), the UK, Spain, Germany and France, who all qualify automatically. Some good songs made it through, while some rubbish managed to slip through (I am looking at Belgium and Serbia here). There a few names not appearing yet again, like the Netherlands, but 7 times winners Ireland managed to make it to the Grand Final.

Azerbaijan appear to be hot favourites, and Iceland are up there as well. The song I am backing this year comes from Romania, and shall be getting my vote later on. If the UK gets any points tonight, it will be a miracle - after last year's high, we have fallen back into bad habits. Though I hope we outscore Belgium and Serbia...

This year sees a 50:50 split between juries and public telephone voting to determine each country's points. Like during the semi-finals, Europe can vote all the way through the contest up to 15 minutes after all the songs have been performed.

I don't know if the hosts are the same as during the week. They didn't bother me too much, but I do wonder why we have to have three.

On a final note, DM and the Band will be able to vote for their favourite in the same format as Eurovision once Eurovision upload the performance videos  onto YouTube.

That is enough yapping! So let's get comfortable and let the fun begin!

1. Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan - It's Beyonce/Rihanna in disguise. Great performance to start! A real challenger to win. (Corki)

This is the bookies' favourite.

4. Moldova

Moldova - the saxophone solo was the best part of the song. Don't like it that much - a bit tuneless. (Corki)

It's our light up fiddle friends! And our saxophone friend to boot!

5. Cyprus Wales

Cyprus - Can Wales storm to Eurovision victory? Song doesn't so much for me - a bit dull. Needs a lift somewhere... (Corki)

Did his guitar break during rehearsal? Why all that tape around it?

9. Belarus

Belarus - a real mish-mash of vocals. Some good; some bad. And the butterflies! Gimmick galore! (Corki)

The one block can sing, the other can't. Gimmick of the night with the butterfly wings?

10. Ireland

Ireland - Ireland back to doing what they do best - ballads. And no turkeys in sight! Good effort. Dark horse, possibly... (Corki)

1993 winner for Ireland is back! Ireland won when Eurovision was in Oslo last...

11. Greece

Greece - Overriding feel of traditional music with a massive lump of electronica mixed in. Fire drums! Lively performance. (Corki)

Should Europe bankrupt Greece by voting for them? And Germany at the same time?  ;D

14. Turkey

Turkey - What a lot of strobe lighting! And something different - nu-metal. A weird robot as well. Might do well as big in Europe (Corki)

Very Un-Eurovision! And a different kind of clothes removing!
