I have been wondering this too.

 

I think he's still real in that he's a dark power . . . but I wonder if he will ever take physical form and enter the Pattern himself.

A physical form would probably be a limiting factor on a potentially omnipotent being.  Also, considering that the Wheel is most likely his prison, I doubt that he will enter the Pattern voluntarily.  That would basically bind him to never be victorious.
