Tor does a re-read of WoT

I found this from the Tor website.  Apparently, one of either their editors or writers is blogging on a re-read of TEOTW.  She is posting summaries of each chapters and her thoughts about each one. (Warning:  If you haven't read the entire series, I suggest you don't read her summaries/comments as she is writing them with the assumption that whoever reads them has in fact read the entire series so there will be spoilers.)

Check it out here:  http://www.tor.com/index.php?option=com_comprofiler&user=21127

All I have to say is that her commentary is insightful at times and really funny at others.  I had to refrain from laughing out loud at the office when I read the last part of her commentary for Chapter 3.  Cenn Buies of the world indeed!  I swear I work with half of them!

Let me know what you thought of her comments.

Enjoy!

Leigh Butler is going to be reading the entire WOT and doing summaries and comments for for about 8 or 9 chapters per post. The post are supposed to come out every Tuesday and Friday. It's good stuff, lots of fun. She's a fan, but takes shots at characters and plot points when they get on her nerves:

He's an example:

"My irritation with Mat continues to grow, as he becomes more and more that guy in horror flicks you want to smack upside the head, because he does all the things you KNOW will get everyone brutally murdered. I’m amazed he didn’t suggest the three of them split up while exploring, at the rate he’s going."

Here's some of her commentary:

"The Whitecloaks, Elaida, and their ilk are, to my mind, among the worst villains in the series, for paving the road to hell for everyone else through their intolerance, rigidity, and pride—all qualities I mentally shorten to “willful stupidity”. Few flaws are worse, at least in my opinion. At least the Forsaken are smart enough to know what side they’re on."

Good stuff. Highly recommended.

I like her commentary about Nynaeve.  It matches my own reactions to her from when I first read the books to the many times I've reread the entire series (I just finished my 11th read through of all the books).

Here's her relevant feelings on Nynaeve:

That being said: I remember when reading this the first time around that I conceived an instant hatred of Nynaeve, which was not to let up for five books. (But then, believe it or not, she became one of my favorite characters in the series—and she became that during the whole Valan Luca traveling circus madness in Fires of Heaven. No, I’m not insane. Well, maybe I am, but I’ll explain my reasoning on that when we get there and you can judge for yourself.)

And this is just a small example.  She has about 3 more paragraphs to finish describing the journey Nynaeve took her on.

I'll definitely have to read these, I love what I have read in this thread. For some reason everything she has said so far, I completely agree with. Especially about the Whitecloaks and Elaida....biggest bunch of idiots in the series.

True. I liked her use of a RL comparison to the Nazis.  Really put the Whitecloaks and Elaida into a proper prospective.

hi. i found this amusing, though i saw a couple of mistakes

im only 1/30 or something trough the blog, but still

the first one is where she says its the only age of legends firsthand reports, has she forgotten the experience rand had with the Rhudean(sp) ter'angreal

second was about the trolloc tribes, she says RJ gave that up almost immediatly, yet i clearly recall Rand citing all the trolloc tribes to himself in KOD when the trollocs attack the manor house.

I have to say that I agree with her wholeheartedly on her Nynaeve feelings. Nynaeve is perhaps one of the most complete characters in the entire story. She's gone on such an incredible journey of growth and change, and now she is my favorite character. I find myself wanting to skip any section inside of the head of any Whitecloak and Elaida. I know they are supposed to be villains, but their willful stupidity is so insufferable I can't sometimes finish reading their sections.

agreed. agreed and again agreed.

stupidity of some characters is so annoying you just skip ahead sometimes. Furthermore:P Nynaeve and mat rule :D even though nynaeve hates mat's guts for some unknown reason hahaha.

I seriously used to think I was the only one who read through the series for the first time and when I found out who's point of view was coming in the next chapter, for some characters I would say "oh no, this is going to be boring, let's get back to Rand, Perrin, or Mat here". I used to hate Niall and Elaida. Especially when they make cocky assumptions, like Niall thinking Rand is a false Dragon. And THEN he turns around and thinks to himself that Omerna makes up a bunch of bullcrap. He's definitely a bright one. Maybe a good General, but whoever put him in charge off the battlefield is as dense as he is.

Anyway, time to read the Tor summaries/re-reads. Good stuff.

He also thinks that the Last Battle won't just be the Dragon v Shai'tan, that it will be a clash of armies similar to the Trolloc Wars, and that the nations of the Westlands will need to be unified in order to face it. Which he would appear to be right about.

You'll find that many ppl have posted to her blog to correct her on many of these mistakes.  Just check the blog postings at the end and I promise you will find a correction somewhere in there.

After all, us WoT fanatics just can't pass up an opportunity to demonstrate that we have a better understanding and grasp on the books than another "supposed" WoT fanatic.  ;)

If I remember right, he thinks it will ONLY be like the Trolloc Wars, and that the DO breaking free will not happen. So I wouldn't give him that much credit.
