Welcome to this month's edition of the Hornsounder!

Welcome, dear Reader, to November's edition of the Hornsounder.

Winter is in full swing for most of us around the globe, while others are fully enjoying the benefits of Spring. Wherever you are and whatever season you are emerged in, for all of us the time has come to count down towards the end of another year and the celebration of many different holidays.

This is a special edition indeed, as it is the last one of 2008 as the entire Hornsounder team is taking a much needed and well earned break in December. So the next edition of the Hornsounder will not be out till end of January. A perfect time for you all to catch up on things, get your resolutions in a row for the new year and maybe gather up that courage to try your hand at some reporter dabling yourself.

Remember, the Hornsounder is YOUR newspaper, regardless whether you are a member of the Band or not and we would love to welcome you and your ideas to our team.

From all of us at the HS Team, I wish you a fantastic holiday season and a relaxing and enjoyable December!

Mystica,

Editor in Chief

JoTS Winner of the Month

This month's topic was: Mat Cauthon.

And the winner: Mystica of the Infantry

Congratulations, Mystica :)

The winning JoTS:

I'm no bloody hero!

They come to me from far and wide

And walk all proudly by my side

These fools who don't know how to hide

Want to see me dance with Jack o' The Shadows.

They look at me with eyes that glow

And think with every kill I grow

Burn me! I'm no bloody hero!

Who wants to dance with Jack o' The Shadows!

November Headlines!

As our regular readers have come to know, the Hornsounder is divided into Sections, each handling a part of the newspaper and housing specific topics. I give you now a summary of what you can find in each Section.

You may find your interested parts quickly by scrolling to the Sections, which are clearly marked by their own Header as the one you see here on top. Subsections within can be recognized by their Blue color and therefore equally easy to recognize.

The Band of the Red Hand Section brings you the Word from our Marshal-General, gives reasons to join the Band, and puts the spotlight on the new occurances of the Band.  Also in this section is an introduction to the Band's current Active Members,  and you get the opportunity to smooch away on our Banders' birthdays Real Life News from our Banders reminds us of the people behind the words.

The Regimental Section will effectively satisfy your hunger for knowing what's been up with the Archers, Cavalry and Infantry this month. Read all about the kidnapping of the Archer Captain-General, Samuraiflip. Will the Cavalry share the secret behind their very successfull recruiting scheme this month? The Infantry is introducing it's most recent, smallest and most cuddliest member: Michael Owern!

In the Raw Recruits Section, our Executive Officer, Paladin Bridmorgan will fill you in on the latest updates on our Recruits and present you with the Recruits of the Month. Read about the newest additions to the Band and how they have been divided amongst the different regiments. Since last month, the Raw Recruit Articles have been moved under the banner of the Raw Recruit section, which seemed to us the most logical place for it. A fine and interesting (funny) collection of articles have made it in the Hornsounder this month indeed. A must read for all!

In the  Redarms Section our Redarm Leader, Paladin Manriva fills you in on all the law breaking and spotfining activities that were found in the Band this past month. What does a granddaughter, a snake, pumkin cake and gumbo have to do with lawbreaking, you ask? Well, read our Corrupted Pirate's report and the mystery will be reveiled.

The Specials Section is the place where random, freelance reporters bring us their specials for the month. Be it in the form of re-occuring columns, one-time articles or other types of informative and entertaining manners, it all finds a place within the Specials. That is, normally. For this month, I'm sad to report, no such submission was sent in and so we were forced to take out this section for this month.

Entertainment is a much needed release from the stress and pressure we all endure going about our daily lives. The Hornsounder has a long standing tradition of offering it's readers a variety of games and competitions, which may vary over time depending on a lesser or greater show of interest and participation. Sadly enough, however, this interest has been greatly lacking in the last months and so the number of competitions and games offered have been dwindling in suit. This month, we offer a caption competition. Can you put a text to that picture and outshine your competitors?

There are no freestanding Games this month, as for this too, no interest has been shown in several months in a row.

Jokes aplenty, on the other side, as Banders elbow each other in an attempt to make you laugh first. So make sure to check them out, for they are destined to bring at least a grin on your face. Something we can all use from time to time.

Dragonmount, our home. Find out the latest news that was reported to the Hornsounder about your ORG and those ORGs you don't know yet. This month our DM Section Reporter and his team brings some interesting news on the Aiel Org, the White Tower Org and the Wolfkin Div.

In the Wheel of Time Section read all about the topic of conversation, turmoil, and uproar from DM this month!

Last, but most definitely not least, the Editorial Section you can find out everything about the Hornsounder itself. What it is, how it works, who the slaving mad people are that make sure you get your newspaper full of interesting stuff each month and how YOU can be a part of it all too.

So there you have it folks. I hope you will enjoy this month's Edition of your Hornsounder thoroughly and if you have any ideas or suggestions that might make your Hornsounder Experience even more fun, don't hesitate to let us know.

Or maybe you too want to try your hand at being a reporter?

There's room in the Hornsounder for everyone, so don't let those doubting demons get the best of you. Jump right in and contact me through pm with any ideas for articles and/or projects you may have!

Until next month,

Mystica,

Editor in Chief

Why Join the BotRH?

So, having read some of the activities the Band gets up to, you want to know more about the ORG? One of the ORG's focus is music, and the Band's other focus is travel. Banders are regularly writing reviews about any music album they own, whether it be old or new, as well as any gigs and concerts they have been to and various locations around the world they've visited. Responses to these reviews are encouraged, which gives Banders points, and these points allow for promotion through the many ranks in the Band. This is the basis of the ORG.

When you first join up with the Band of the Red Hand, you become a Raw Recruit. During this time, you experience life with each of the three Regiment (Archers, Cavalry, Infantry) and the Band itself as well so you get to know how the ORG works, and you don't get lost in your early days in the Band. After your three weeks of completing various tasks as a Recruit, you then pick the Regiment you wish to join and thus become a fully fledged member of the Band of the Red Hand. Also, once you picked your Regiment, you will be guided to become an Infantry Blademaster or a Knight of the Cavalry or an Assassin within the Archers.

However, the Band is not all about work. We have many fun activities going on within the ORG, ranging from simple word games to our ORG Game, created by Canis Rufus with the help of Mallett. Everything is based on the luck of rolling dice, so build up your stats to give yourself the chance of getting better rolls! Once you've taken the seven easy lessons, you can then challenge any Bander to a duel in the Arena and bring great glories to your name! Look out for Festivals of Games as another way to bring glory to your name! We are the only ORG to gamble as well, so create a Bank Account and join in the Lottery to earn some big winnings just like Mat!

As you can see, the Band is a place with a variety of activities, hopefully catering for everyone's needs. There are various activities for those who want points to go up the ranks, or fun and games for those who want to socialise. The Band is open to everyone, so come and join the fun at the best ORG at DM!

Bander's Real Life Stories

(compiled by Paladin DJ)

Recently our fellow Bander's don't seem to have too much to share in the RL side of their lives.  However, this month we do have two submissions, one from our esteemed EiC Mystica and one from our new GE Demon. Without further adieu let us see what events happened this month.

Night of the Proms 2008 - Antwerp, Belgium

(by Mystica)

So I went to Night of the Proms for the third time this year and for the third time it didn't dissapoint me one second. Those of you that are interested of taking a peek at the entire programme, can do so here.

Sinead O'Connor was spectacular, though I have heard people say that at other concerts she wasn't all that great. I guess it depends on the day and mood she's in. But luckily for us, this day she was rocking the house down!

Simple Minds, well that was a trip down memory lane, for sure. Last time I saw them was in '86 (I was 16 then) and light all mighty, did that take me way back! Jim Kerr may be closing to his 50's, but he's every bit as agile and audience focussed as he was back then. Not exactly 'sing-along' type of performance, rather than a more free-style version of some of their songs like Belfast Child, Don't you forget about me and the likes. Great interaction with the audience, show of huge respect for the orchestra and basically a joy to see and hear!

The Angels in Harlem Gospel Choir were a revelation. Any of you that saw Sister Act or Sister Act 2, well the song the students won the competition with at the end in 2, it wouldn't surprise me one bit if they got their inspiration from this choir. They brought that same mix version of 'Oh Happy Days' in the exact same manner as in the movie, including a man singing those very high notes. Bone chilling that!

The Orchestra, Il Novecento is the standard orchestra that performs every year at the Proms and so too this year and once again they were beyond outstanding. The way these artists meld classical music with contemporary and switch between styles and moods is absolutely breath taking. They flawlessly and seemlessly pick up on any song, any type of music, any alteration and any change, no matter how abrupt or weird seeming. These ladies and gents are the top of musical performance.

One of the traditions of Night of the Proms is that each year a relatively new or unknown artist or band gets a chance to perform before a wide, international audience. This year it was a Belgian artist, but I'm not going to go into that one much as it wasn't exactly my favorite. *chuckles*

What I liked and found hilariously funny, however, was the duo Igudesman and Joo. If you ever get a chance to see these two, make sure you go!! And make sure you have a good seat or one of those theater penoculars, because you hàve to see the mimics they do along with their act. One of them is a violinist, the other a pianist. Together they are absolutely hilarious ànd very very VERY talented. The things they do with their instruments, while playing flawlessly, is beyond belief.

One thing that I found much much less thrilling (and I'm sorry to do this to you Americans, yet again) was Live. While they may sound real good on dvd and on radio, 'live' they suck big time. They don't have any natural strength behind their voice, they don't have any stage presentation and they, well to be honest, they are basically arrogant and rude. Understand that this is a concert, where all artists are accompanied by a full out, fully manned orchestra. The works. Most of these bands don't EVER get to perform with such an orchestra, or anything that comes even remotely close to it for their entire careers. For most artists, this is a dream come true and MOST artists show a proper, professional and artistic respect for the orchestra, the conductor and the entourage in general. Not so for Live. They hauled their entire band up there, including a full set of drums (while there were several and probably much better drum sets in the orchestra), blocking the entire view of the orchestra and outshouting them with electric guitars and whatnot. One of those guitarists at one point went slam dunk in between the violinists of the orchestra, performing some Meatloaf Wannabe stunt and the ladies had to dodge his wild movements and do all they could just to keep playing as this baboon of an idiot was waving his guitar around like he was standing alone in Times Square. *rolls eyes* Anyway, enough to say, not exactly my favorite band that one. Tsk.

But on the overall, most definately a concert worth seeing and I hope I can make it again next year!!  #party-smiley-027#

New Role for the Demon

(by Demon)

Well it has been a long time in coming, but it has finally been made official! I have a new job title at work... No, not lazy bloody git, before you start!

After several months and a whole load of blood sweat and tears, I am now a Design Engineer. This has been made possible due to me working on a very high profile project for the London 2012 Olymics Rejuvenation Scheme. London will be pushing towards a "Green" Olymics meaning that travel to events will be only possible via public transport. This was good news for my company as we were bidding for the exclusive rights to supply the transport initiative with new public information displays.

I was given the unenviable task of designing brand new and modern-looking designs to put forward as part of the bid. The designs I came up with must have done the trick as we are now on the shortlist of two potential providers of the displays. I is quite chuffed.  ;D

News From The Range!

(by El Nyn)

The month of November has passed and we steadily march on into December and towards the new year. The Archers hope that for those of you who celebrate it everyone had a happy Thanksgiving and look forward to Christmas time now. ;D This month was rather quiet with lots of people recovering from Halloween and all the activity and sweets that went with it. The kidnapping of CG Samuraiflip was the big event of the month. The Archers awoke one morning to find that the Cavalry had snuck in and stolen him away, much to the chagrin of his banded most of all. A long struggle ensued in the Cavalry Yard, ending when Blade and Rodelle managed to free him and send him flying back to the Range.

Promotions

November 1st:

From Sergeant to Mst Sergeant:

Mst Sgt Moghedian

From Raw Recruit to Private First Class:

PFC Rodelle

November 15th:

There were no promotions within the Archers during this period.

RLO Business

Our first RR of the month was Vasu, who appeared to enjoy himself thoroughly and jumped right into drinking with us. His first task was to write some Jak o the Shadows verses about archery and such good verses they were. For his other two tasks he was told to dish up drinks at one of our taverns and do DJ duty at our local radio station. He did a fantastic job and we hope he'll come back to visit us. Our second recruit was Mathias who was told he also had to write Jak o the Shadows verses before tending bar and all the usual stuff we archers get up to.

Redarms Notepad

The Redarms were very quiet this month, not a one handed out a spotfine. That is mostly likely due to the fact that the Archers were too drunk to make much trouble and even the Raw Recruits were well behaved enough during their stays with us. Don't expect it to stay that way though. ;)

Regimental Competition

The Archers did very well indeed on the last two legs of the Regimental Band Idol Competition and were leading the last time we looked. Unfortunately our esteemed MG seems to have had too much brew and hasn't yet totted up the final points. We're fairly confident about the outcome though. ;D

Journey to Assassin

The Journey to Assassin is what all our new Archers undertake upon joining our regiment. It helps them develop their skills as an Archer and cements their dedication to our hard working regiment. They start off as an Apprentice before moving onto Journeyman/Journeywoman and with hard work, they will achieve the rank of Assassin and taking the title of Sora or Frato and joining the Brotherhood of their choice.

Assassins:

Brotherhood of the Rose - Sora Jeannaisais and Sora el Nynaeve

Brotherhood of the Lily - Frato Snin, Sora Helike and Sora Alishandra

Journeyman/woman: Dragonlover and Samuraiflip

Apprentices: Amavia, Corki (MG), Iron Monk, Tharengore, Barracuda, Moghedian, Rodelle and MonsterMetroid

From the Horse’s Mouth ~ News of the Cavalry!

(By Imperium)

Greetings from the Yard!!

Don't months just fly by, so here we go again....

November has brought about the change to the structure of the band and the Cavalry's leader for the new term is Lord Horn. Horn will be joined by Sir Cairos as his Lieutenant General and Lady May as his Banner General. Our crime stopping red arms for the new term are Sir Manriva, Lady Taluka and Lady Tiren. Finally our Recruit Handlers (RLOs) are Squire Felicur and Page Imperium. I am sorry but we can't announce the leaders of the Knightly Orders for reasons which can't be disclosed!

There has been 2 additions to the cavalry this month (Vasu and Mathias) which are covered later. We wish them both good luck with the their Page and Squire programme and hope they uphold the Cavalry's tradition. (I have had Feli banging on about tradition, so I had to throw it in somewhere...)

This brings us nicely onto the people who have now reached a huge milestone in their time with the cavalry. Squires Nocturne and Felicur have both been knighted and will henceforth be known as Lady Nocturne and Sir Felicur. Lady Nocturne has joined the mythical ranks of the Arthurians while Sir Felicur has become a noble Templar. We wish them a great time with their orders and much beer! For animal lovers it may be of interest to know that the name of Lady Nocturne's new horse is Shadar Nor.

Our redarms have given out some spot fines this month, however due to lack of formal written papers these can't be put down as valid. They do have a sense of humour and might be making them up and we don't want them to get sued do we now....

We are still waiting for the results of the last two regimental competitions to come through. Watch this space for more details....

And finally...(hears a few cheers!)

RR Round Up

(by Sir Felicur)

November proved a quiet, but fruitful, month for the Cavalry regards Raw Recruits. We had only the pleasure of two through the Stable doors but both came back home, picking the Cavalry as the Regiment to join after completing their RR training.

Mathias was the first of the two RR’s to visit the Cavalry this month. The poor guy was so eager, that he came a day early, and our ever vigilant XO, DJ, had to gently poke the RR out of the Stable yard until the next day. When Mathias did legally arrive, he proved a great sport mucking in and helping yours truly clean out the stables. He ingenuously came up with the idea of using dung beetles to speed up the job, or else we’d both still be there shoveling sh@t.

Regarding tasks, Mathias jousted against Lord Riva, but because of the late start, was unable to finish the fight. The thread is still open if he wants to pick up where he left off. He also wrote a mouth-watering restaurant article (I may be biased) about an aptly named Irish bar called ‘McGuire’s. The third task proved quite a trick one, and poor Mathias had to ask questions to try and find out whose horse had gone missing. The RR showed intelligence by unravelling the clues but ran out of time before he could free the horse. The horse turned out to be Aragorn, Lady Brid’s horse. Incidentally, the horse has been freed and returned to its owner; though it’s better the RA’s don’t look into how this came about (big hint there... - edited Imperium)

Vasu was the other RR to come to the Cavalry this month, and I must begin by saying that not only were his actions monitored closely by the RLO’s, but he also caught the eye of our CG Lord Horn, who bestowed the ‘Cavalry Silver Recruit Pin’ on Vasu as a result of the RR’s hard work during tasks and generally interaction with Cavalry members.

Vasu had a great joust with XO DJ, taking the former Joust master to a tiebreaker. Both competitors still await the result, as it appears that the judge, Lord Riva, has fallen asleep in his cabin once again. Hopefully he’ll waken soon! :P Vasu also wrote a very popular music review about Iron Maiden. For his final task he had to break a rule, and boy did he break a rule! Vasu used all three of his strikes using the OP to hit Imperium with a barrel of bandy…the barrel exploded everywhere and Vasu got a slap on the wrists for a job well done! (and a serious arse kicking shortly for his troubles - Edited Imperium)

Well that’s it, only two RR’s this month. We look forward to what December brings, and the prospect of the new victims Raw recruits that come into the Stables.

Welcome to Infantry Row!

(by Taymist)

It's been all change at the Barracks in November with the start of our Christmas Term. Tay and Footy teamed up once more as Captain-General and Lieutenant-General and were joined by Demonspawn who completed the trio as Banner-General.

Other staff are as follows:

Snr RLO - Mystica

RLO - Karaj

RAs - Kristine, Lanthirrhos and Arrandion

Our thanks to them all for taking on staff roles once more.

New Infant Joins The Ranks

... and I mean that literally!! Our beloved Kristine announced the birth, 2 weeks early, of her baby boy Michael Owen on November 17th at at 1:23 pm CST. He weighed in at 7lbs 8oz and 20 inches long. Congrats to Kris and her hubby and a warm welcome to the latest Infant.  ;D You can see the happy family below....

Regimental Award

On the 24th of the month, Demonspawn's contributions to both the Infantry and the band were recognised when he was given the Infantry Regimental Award.

In spite of being apparently rendered speechless ( a first to our knowledge!!), he managed to accept the award graciously. Congratulations Demon!

Promotions

November 1st

From Sergeant to Master Sergeant

Mst. Sgt. thewindsoftime of the Infantry

From Corporal to Sergeant

Sgt. Naeann of the Infantry

November 15th

From Captain to Banner-Captain

B-C Arrandion of the Infantry

Congratulations to all of you on your hard work.  :)

Raw Recruits

Mathias and Vasu visited the Barracks for their Recruit training this month and both did exceptionally well with their assigned tasks. They started off with writing articles for the Hornsounder and then Mathias faced a barrage of Questions and Answers from the Infantry regulars before setting up a Weapons Boutique. Vasu meanwhile interviewed Blademaster Kristine Aislinnis and ran an Infantry Themed Diner for a week. His Vonderful Vodka Vith Vine went down a storm.  ;)

Blademaster Programme

Following Arrandion's elevation to Blademaster in October, Demonspawn is now undergoing his Testing. We hope to be able to share results on that in the next edition. He will be swiftly followed by Kastchei who has applied for training too. It's very exciting to see so many of our Infants choosing to follow this path and living up to the standards set by the first Blademasters. Best of luck to both of our Master Hopefuls.

Other News

A new Tavern of the Red Hand was opened recently by Footy with rather strange results. It appears everything is made of cardboard. Not too convinced that's going to work but it should make any brawling less painful!

The Officers' Quarters also made a long overdue reappearance and staff and visitors are making themselves at home already. Anyone who is not an Infantry Officer has to receive an invitation to enter giving Officers a much needed break and some peace!!

The Infantry were responsible for the Artist of the Month thread for November and decided to focus on Aerosmith. Kara has posted the write up at Dragonmount for everyone's comments and hopefully a few of you will stop by to join in.

That's it for November folks, I'll be back in January with more gossip and news. Have a safe and Happy Christmas and New Year.  :)

Raw Recruits of the Band

(by Paladin Jon the Direwolf, XO)

Welcome, to the new edition of the Raw Recruit report.  For any future Banders out there, the Raw Recruit Program is how we initiate all new members to our Org. Each Recruit spends a week with our three regiments in turn, doing fun tasks and getting to know members. At the end of the three weeks they get to choose a Regiment to join.

During the month of November we had two Recruits graduate and both earned their Raw Recruit Stripe!!! Our graduates were Vasu619 and Mathias (mcs0083)Vasu chose to join with the Cavalry. Mathias chose to join the Cavalry as well. Congratulations to you both and I know you'll  do your new Regiment proud!

The Outstanding Recruit of the Month is the Recruit that has stood out to me as being the most motivated and dedicated. The Outstanding Recruit must excel amongst his/her peers and a reward for this prestigious title is the prize of one org point.  This month we had a tie.

The Outstanding Recruit for the month of November are:  Vasu619 and Mathias.

Don't forget to congratulate them next you see them.  Well done Vasu and Mathias!

Of the Recruits choosing Regiments the statistics for 2008 are:

7 - Infantry

16 - Cavalry

5 - Archers

Missing In Action figures are decent with 21 out of 56 Recruits going MIA this year, but we also have 2 members waiting to choose a regiment and we have 3 new Recruits working their way through their training at the moment. A warm welcome to Rhannan, Animals, and Crazy Diamond  who are currently going through their Recruit time.

Check out the Regimental Articles to see what our Recruits have been up to this past month!

This past month has been full of work and it has been a great start to this final term of 2008.  Although I won't be reporting for next month, as the Hornsounder will be taking a break, I'd like to thank the current RLOs for all their hard work that they've put into the month and making the recruits feel at home.

RLOs for the November/December Term:

Archers:

Blade

Snin

Cavalry:

Felicur

Imperium

Infantry:

See you next month with more RR antics!

Weapons

(by mcs0083)

Ah, weapons. So many to choose from, all with their pluses and minuses. Not bows of course. Those are for lazy people. And a spear or lance should be used on your own two feet, not on horse back. You can't do fancy combination moves that way, like spinning it to block an arrow, then twirling around and stabbing somebody in the eye! ^^

So now that that's out of the way, what is there to choose? Well, to me axes are too unreliable. You go to chop off a guys head, and only end up getting half way through his neck. Spears are cool I guess, but what if the pole of your spear is made of wood and it gets chopped in half. You would then have to pull a monty python and "Run Away!". And blunt weapons are to sloppy. If I'm going to deliver someone's head to my superior, it should be cleanly sliced. Not beaten to a bloody pulp ><

And now you ask "What is there left?" Well swords of course!

The bestest weapons ever! But there are still MANY different kinds of swords. Broadswords, short swords, long swords, claymores, cutlasses, rapiers, and the little cousins known as daggers. But which is the optimal choice in my opinion? The one I didn't name of course! A katana! It's durable, easy to wield, and they look awesome of course. So based on what I believe, the katana is the best infantry weapon a soldier could have.

The Infantry

(by Vasu619)

One of the oldest and the most romantic part of an army, the infantry is the branch of the army which fights on foot, and thereby, arguably, takes the most risks. Due to this, al large emphasis is placed on the physical fitness and nimbleness of the recruit in question. Can you run faster than a European swallow? If you can, then you may join the infantry.

Jokes aside, most armies require the candidate’s success in a medley of rigorous tests which are designed to test the candidate’s physical fitness, clear-headedness in moments of panic, and the daring of the recruit. All are important for a member of the infantry, as he is the one on the frontlines.

The infantry has evolved over the years, and has changed with time. Indeed there are those who argue that most of the armies today don’t even possess an infantry, as all soldiers use ranged, rather than melee, weapons (this is usually associated with archers). However, it must be noted that in olden times, very few archers turned up in the thick of the battle and generally stayed back, and performed the equivalent of what we today call “sniping”. So, the infantry defined as the unit of the army which performs “on-location” missions.

But, moving on to my primary topic in this article, I shall speak particularly of the infantry of the old times. When swords clashed with scimitars, pikes stabbed through lances, and bucklers bore the brunt of enemy arrowfire.

This period is one of the most romanticised parts of history, and contains the most epic and adrenalin pumping stories of all time, namely: the story of William Wallace.

Sir William Wallace, (approx 1272-1323) was a famous Scottish knight most well known for his role in the wars of Scottish independence.

Often titled “Braveheart” (after which an academy award winning picture was named), his portrayal in fiction, is unfortunately much exaggerated. We do not have many accurate sources of his past, so I will try to reproduce the little we do know.

The reason Scotland’s sovereignty was disturbed was because of the death of their then king Alexander III, who did not leave any successors. His 4 year old granddaughter Margaret was made Queen, but due to her small age, an interim council was set up to govern affairs. King Edward I of England seized upon this moment of instability in the Scottish monarchy to attack, and eventually conquer Scotland. This was when William Wallace decided that he had had enough.

His heroic roles in the Battles of Falkirk and Stirling have inspired many Scots for many years. From doubtable sources, his father’s name appears to have been Alan, and he is known to be the second among 3 brothers. He first declared war against the tyrannous rule of the then king of England, Edward “Longshanks”. He first entered the history books by killing the Sheriff of Lanark.

One of his most famous battles was the Battle of the Stirling Bridge. Even though he and his army was outnumbered by the number of British cavalry and longbow men, the Scottish troops successfully routed the English army and secured the Bridge of Stirling (a rather narrow one, it must be noted), because its narrowness was exploited by the Scottish troops in making up for their small numbers.

Later, in the even more famous battle of Falkirk (even though it was lost), he showed great military genius and arranged his infantry in a unique formation, of circular groups, called “schiltrons”. However, even using this manoeuvre, he could not defeat King Edward’s longbow men. He, however, caused great losses to Edward’s men and nearly managed to take over the castle that used to stand in Falkirk, before he was finally repelled.

Later, he was taken as a prisoner and executed by the King. A statue of him stands to this day in Aberdeen.

He was truly a great soldier, who died doing what he liked best – defying the foreign rule.

The Redarm Report

(by Auld Manriva)

Here it is Thanksgiving Day here in the US and wherever else on this rock circling the Sun, Americans lay about. Came over to the daughters place back in the woods just a days walk north of Mobile, where I was greeted with an ex-gray rat snake lying expired on the porch. Of course this bunch has never seen a serpent they did not immediately recognize; as anything but a "ground rattler" if it was not too large or a "Cottonmouth" (both venomous of course) if it had any girth at all.

This one had made the fatal error of lounging on the welcome mat when the granddaughter opened the front door to retrieve something from her "teengirl mobile". The ensuing hysterical screaming, shouting and confusion  (Mamaaaaaaa! Snaaaaaaake) led to the demise of Mr. No-Shoulders by firing squad. A small squad (one corpulent shaved head Saxon Mothers Son with a firearm) to be sure. But one that could hardly miss from all of 3 feet.

This passage by the serpentine corpse and the story that inevitably followed, only slightly diminished the anticipation of a swell Pot of Gumbo which had been planned for several days and which I as a non traditional celebrant of Holidays had been looking forward to with relish. The prospect of a big hunka Pumpkin Cake (not pie) afterwards had me worked up quite a bit too. My anticipation was to be curtailed to quite a degree though, when I was volunteered to shuck 5lbs of Shrimp and then be subjected to the all fired 'stupidest M. Knight Shayamalan movie ever foisted on the viewing public. The Happening.... how this film happened to ever be made happens to be one of the biggest mysteries I've ever happened across.

But now I sit pounding keys, stuffed and happy. A truly spectacular pot of seafood gumbo with shrimp, oysters and crab cannot be beat by any plate of food no where no how. And that pumpkin cake (much like a carrot cake but in layers) was nirvana on a paper dish. It was so good in fact that my normal rant had its' fire took out of it, cause I am so blissfully complacent presently. A very difficult place from which to compose vitriolic ramblings and sardonic witticism's.

But I guess you all are reading this to find news of The Bands' RedArms. That's really too bad actually. Because there isn't much news of The RedArms in November. The RAL (that's me) has been the only one around much this month and being the lazy sod I am, lately the lawbreakers have run amok. Though they are all on my list and retribution will be a pure T sight to behold.

There was however some great news from the abode of The RA 2nd in charge (RAZIC) Kristine. She successfully delivered a bouncing baby boy early in November. Well successfully after a first attempt at a wrong address. But after much back and forth on the satellite computer link we finally got her to the correct address and her delivery was made without further event... to HER OWN HOUSE for all love! No Wonder she'd had trouble reading some scribbled address label written by some barely legible hand on a piece of paper taped onto the infants forehead. Why that would have bamboozled even ME!

Until Next Time Dear Readers....

Let's Be Careful Out There

what? huh? Oh!  Oh yeah.... Merry Christmas to all and to all...... Don't Bother Me Till Next Year!!

November Competition Winners

(by Paladin Jon the Direwolf, XO)

This month saw yet another quiet month for the entertainment section. In fact the entertainment section was actually dead for the second month in a row. Although the Caption the Pic competition was included in last month's edition, there were no takers that wanted to win a prize, so there are no winners to report to you here. Instead, I will give you some news about this month's entertainment games and competitions.

Although it's sad to see, the Sudoku competition did not return, but it might be returning after our break in December.

The Caption the Pic is still available to those who would like to earn extra points. It is an interesting pic, so you might want to see if you can come up with the best caption, check out the post below.

Daily Budget

(by Arrandion)

"We have a terrible time making ends meet on Bob's income." his wife told her best friend.

"How do you two manage? And you even have kids!"

"We get along okay," her friend said. "You see, we work on our budget every evening. That saves us lots of money."

"Really? How can that be?"

"Well, by the time we get it all balanced, it's too dang late to go anywhere and do anything!"

Jealous Wife

(by Arrandion)

There was once a wife so jealous that when her husband came home one night and she couldn't find hairs on his jackets she yelled at him, "Great, so now you're cheating on me with a bald woman!"

A Good Baby

(by Arrandion)

A three year old walked over to a pregnant lady while waiting with his mother in the doctors office.

He inquisitively ask the lady, "Why is your stomach so big?"

She replied, "Im having a baby."

With big eyes, he asked, "Is the baby in your stomach?"

She said, "He sure is."

Then the little boy, with a puzzled look, asked, "Is it a good baby?"

She said, "Oh, yes. It's a real good baby."

With an even more surprised and shocked look, he asked...

"Then why did you eat him?"

Jewels

(by El Nyn)

I like the story of the woman who had an artist paint a portrait of her covered with jewels. Her explanation: "If I die and my husband remarries, I want his next wife to go crazy looking for the jewels."

Questions to God

(by El Nyn)

A man was speaking to God.

"God, why did you make women so beautiful?" he asked.

God said: "I did that to make you love them".

Then the man asked: "Well, God; why did you make them such good cooks?"

God said: "I did that to make you love them".

The man then asked: "But God, why did you make women so stupid?".

God said: "I did that to make them love you!"

13th Time is the Charm

(by El Nyn)

A lawyer got married to a woman who had previously been married 12 times. On their wedding night, they settled into the bridal suite at their hotel and the bride said to her new groom, "Please, promise to be gentle. I am still a virgin."

This puzzled the groom, since after 12 marriages, he thought that at least one of her husbands would have been able to perform. He asked his new bride to explain the phenomenon. She responded:

My first husband was a Sales Representative who spent the entire marriage telling me, in grandiose terms, how great it was going to be.

My second husband was from Software Services; he was never quite sure how it was supposed to function, but he promised he would send me documentation.

My third husband was from Field Services and repeatedly said that everything was diagnostically OK, but couldn't get the system up.

My fourth husband was from Educational Services, and you know the old saying-'Those who CAN, DO; those who can't, teach.'

My fifth husband was from the Telemarketing Department. He knew he had the order, but he wasn't quite sure when he was going to be able to deliver.

My sixth husband was an Engineer. He told me that he understood the basic process but needed three years to research, implement, and design a new state-of-the-art method.

My seventh husband was from Finance and Administration. He knew how, but he just wasn't sure whether it was his job or not.

My eighth husband was from Standards and Regulations, and he told me that he met the minimum standards but regulations weren't clear on how to do it.

My ninth husband was a Marketing Manager. Even though he had the product. he just wasn't sure how to position it.

My tenth husband was a psychiatrist. All he ever wanted to do was talk about it.

My eleventh husband was a gynecologist, and all he ever wanted to do was look at it.

My twelfth husband was a stamp collector, and all he ever wanted to do was . . . -God I miss him!

So now I've married you, and I'm really excited."

"Why is that," asked the lawyer. "Well, it should be obvious! You're a lawyer!! I just know I'm going to get screwed this time!

Problems Driving

(by Demon)

Two elderly women were out driving in a large car-both could barely see over the dashboard. As they were cruising along they came to an intersection. The stoplight was red but they just went on through. The woman in the passenger seat thought to herself "I must be losing it, I could have sworn we just went through a red light."

After a few more minutes they came to another intersection and the light was red again and again they went right though. This time the woman in the passenger seat was almost sure that the light had been red but was really concerned that she was losing it. She was getting nervous and decided to pay very close attention to the road and the next intersection to see what was going on.

At the next intersection, sure enough, the light was definitely red and they went right through and she turned to the other woman and said, "Mildred! Did you know we just ran through three red lights in a row! You could have killed us!"

Mildred turned to her and said, "Oh, am I driving?"

Welcome to the White Tower Org. This is where all the Aes Sedai and all the Warders dwell. November is another slow month because of the holiday weeks that consume our time. This month we had Veterans Day where we honored our Veterans. Also we have Thanksgiving where people celebrate with one another and giving thanks.

The Gray Ajah hosted a Thanksgiving Dinner in the Great Hall for everybody to join and have dinner. This is a special event because people can come and enjoy time with friends and giving thanks for things that happened this year.

WoT News

Brandon Sanderson updated his blog with information on A Memory of Light recently and informed readers that he has reached the 3000 word mark, which he feels is just under half way. He hopes to get to 4000 by the end of December and then plans to have a meeting with Harriet to decide whether a revision is necessary or if he should carry on.

He suspects that publication will likely be November 2009 at the earliest and noted that Tor plans to rush publication through as speedily as possible once the book is completed. Although he couldn't comment on whether the book would be published in one volume or two, he is writing it as a single book.

What exactly IS the Hornsounder?

Hornsounder is the Band of the Red Hand's monthly Newspaper. It evolved from a newsletter into a newspaper in March 2007 when Mystica took over as Editor in Chief and started a full restructuring and re-organisation of what once was not much more than a points earning tool.

Today, Hornsounder is a full sized newspaper that is run by a whole team of people and covers not only news from the Band but also offers a space to all other groups on Dragonmount to share their news and events with the rest of the community. Although the main focus remains on the Band, of course, it is a nice extra forum for other groups to get in touch with those that have not yet been in touch with them as well as offers their members a certain amount of pride to see their beloved group represented in this newspaper. (we hope... )

Hornsounder is open to everyone on DM, regardless of which group they belong to or don't belong to. And this in both ways. Whether you just want to read, play the games or participate in the Competitions, everyone is welcome to join in. The same goes for being actively involved in the Hornsounder as a reporter. Everyone is welcome to participate, write articles, offer a project they would like to run or simply get involved by offering ideas and suggestions to increase the quality of your newspaper.

There are some restrictions where positions are concerned, given that Hornsounder IS the Band's newspaper and therefore Banders do get priority on certain aspects. But this does not exclude the possibility of involvement for Non-Banders who wish to be an active part of it.

Interested in getting involved? contact Mystica through pm and she'll get back to you asap after assessing your suggestion/idea.

How does the Hornsounder work?

Hornsounder, like every real newspaper, is divided into Sections and some of those have Subsections.

Sections are shown by their individual Graphic Headers.

Subsections are shown in BLUE

The Reporter Teams.

Each Section is run by a Section Senior Reporter who is the coordinator of the entire Section, including the subsections. It is their job to make sure all the elements are submitted at the deadline given and meets the required quality standards. Some Subsections are in themselves so big that they too have been assigned a Section Senior Reporter.

The different Sections and Subsections are made up of a series of articles that can be made/written by either the SSR's or by other writers: Junior Reporters. They write parts of the Section contents and work closely together with the SSR's. They get to be mentioned as the author of the articles they write/make, and in case of a Bander get the points that go along with it.

Next to the Section Reporters we also have Project Reporters.

Senior Project Reporters are those in charge of a large project that almost certainly requires the help of Junior Reporters.

Junior Project Reporters are those in charge of small or medium sized projects and may (or may not) need assistance from Junior Reporters.

Which projects are Senior or Junior level is decided by the Editor in Chief on a case-to-case basis.

The Editorial Team is made up by an Editor in Chief, a Senior Editor, a Graphic Editor and Junior Editors.

The Editor in Chief runs the whole newspaper. Creates and motivates the team, monitors progress and overlooks all Sections and everyone involved, gathers all the submissions and glues it all together into one coherent and appealing newspaper. The EiC also guards the quality of the newspaper, assesses new ideas/suggestions, implements new features and follows up on just about everything. The EiC has the final say on everything though should always strive to find the right balance between her team's ideas, the newspaper's needs and the readers' wishes.

The Senior Editor is the right hand of the EiC and picks up the reins in case the EiC is unable to perform the function. The SE is there to insure that the newspaper is published on time and with the set quality even if the EiC is indisposed.

The Graphic Editor is the left hand of the EiC and is in charge of all the graphical elements of the newspaper. From the Headers to the graphics in the articles, this is all the GE's domain. He/she is the one writers can turn to if they want to liven up their sections or articles with a graphical item.

The Junior Editor, are the assistants of the EiC and SE and tackle a variety of preperatory tasks on the editorial aspect of the Hornsounder. To become a JE one needs to be extremely active, willing and eager to work behind the scenes and be available for whatever the EiC and SE may need them for.

Hornsounder's Teams

How to be a part of the Hornsounder team.

If you would like to try your hand at being a reporter or you have an idea for a project, a game, a competition or you would like to participate in one of the Sections, then here's your chance!

Send a PM to Mystica with an outline of your idea or request.

She will assess it and give you an answer as soon as possible.

Note: Hornsounder claims the right to make any adjustments to your ideas that might be necessary to insure the quality and coherency of the newspaper.
