AotM- The Allman Brothers Band

This months Artist of the Month is the Allman Brothers Band. 

 

A Southern Rock group formed in Jacksonville, FL in 1969, the band features Duane and Gregg Allman.  The band has been caled "the principle architects" of southern rock.  Other founding memebers included Dickey Betts, Berry Oakley, Butch Trucks and Jai Johanny Johanson. 

 

The closest that Duane and Gregg had been to success prior to ABB was two failed album attempts as The Hour Glass on the Liberty Records label.  While Gregg remained under contract with Liberty, Duane was released and returned to Florida and began putting together ABB.  When Gregg rejoined his brother the ABB played numerous gigs through the South before releasing their debut album "The Allman Brothers Band".  Though the album got great critical acclaim, it never received more than a cult following of listeners. 

 

The follow-up album Idlewild South in 1970 was a massive critical and lucrative success.  Songs like

showed that they were getting better at shorter more redio freindly songs. 

 

In 1971 a live album At Fillmore East was another great success and included powerful renditions of

and a rendition of Blind Willie Mctell's Statesboro Blues.

 

Duane Allman died in a car crash in 1971, and Dickey Betts filled his role for the completion of Eat a Peach.  The band still tours, performs and records new material to this day.

This is one of the many groups that I grew up listening to, because it was what my parents listened too.  I have some very heavy roots in music that is a decade or so older than me...lol.
