Wishful Thinking?

This may be a little far fetched but as I read through the wheel of time more and more I'm starting to think that it is set on planet Earth in the future. My main reason being that he draws names from all over the place when he could have just as easy made up his own. But they are names we all recognize. And I may be wrong but in The Shadow Rising, I  can't remember who it is off hand is walking around in the musuem in Tanchico they discribe something that is older that the AOL and it's discribed as a three pointed star inside a circle. They can't quite tell what it's made of thought, said it reminded of  arrogance. That to me sounds like a mercadies benz hood ornamate. Anyone else notice this?

Yes this is the common understanding. I think it is meant to be after WWIII (which is generally considered will be fought with nuclear weapons, resulting in very little surviving) and is the 'next' cycle (or Age) of this world.

There are quite a few posts about this, I'll see if I can drag some up. Majsju will certainly be able to offer help.

Yep. There's a good article I'll see if I can find in which the author has found some other "Mercedes Logos" in RJs writing.

Two spring to mind, and this through the fog of my memory, when the Emonds Fielders are clamouring for Thom to tell them a story in tEOTW.Goes something like ... "Tell us about the giant, Mosc, and his firery spear that flew around the world. And about Merk..." People have suggested that Mosc represents the USSR, Merk is America and the fiery lance is nuclear weaponry.

Theres also a hollowed out bowl in the earth with a huge metal spike sticking out of it. People have suggested that this is a radio dish of somesort.

The Mercedes logo has been mentioned too.

I'm the same, usually after trawling through 8 pages of posts I find that the point I was about to make has been made on page 7.99.

I am indeed a Brit, but live in Lebanon.

Thank you. It's certainly never a dull moment here.

Just read the previous DM post you posted below. Phew...!

Without getting neck-deep in the theory, it certainly looks like Randland is the same world as our own, beit in the past or future.

It does, though i'm not sure if i like the theory or not. Personally, half the romance comes from the fact that Randland is a different planet, a different world and can pretty much be anything. Anything I imagine could be possible in Randland because we do not know enough of it to discount anything.

There are certainly many things which suggest our-world developments and things that we are familiar with, for example when Rand, Hurin and... someone... go through the portal stone, they come to a strange land. There is a 'trail' in the sky which is (to us) immediately recognisable as a plane. In book 9 at the very beginning when Rand is in the Academy in Cairhein, he looks down into the courtyard to see them building a monstrosity with a big barrell-like wagon and lighting fires inside it. I believe this to be a steam engine. Idrien tells Rand of someone trying to power a boat by using waterwheels (presumably propellars) and numerous other things can be likened to our-world objects.

I like the series just as it is however, and i would hate to suddenly discover someone has invented the bullet.

I quite like it.

I think it's kind of funny imaging an Aes Sedai holding a Mercedes logo up and thinking, wow, what an unusual symbol. Just hoping Maccies almighty Golden Arches don't make an appearance!  ;D

As for the waterwheels, I think they're the very same waterwheels used today ... well, if not today, then not all that long ago. RJs a Southerner afterall and that's a pretty sterotypical image of the South, at least for me.

Anyways, it makes me think that the Final Battle is going to be pretty impressive. What could possibly rival nukes? (Assuming that's what ended our age in the series...)

And it's Louis by the way (pronounced the French way.) :)

I have an image of TG. They're facing-off. The Dark side pull out their angreal and things, shouting "we've got more angreal than you! AND we've got two Gholam!"

Mat saunters forwards, hand hidden behind his back. "You may have angreal, but they can't hurt me. You may have Gholam, but i've fought one before. I, on the other hand, have an uzi, and lots of bullets."

To steal a few lines ....

Taim sees the stand-off between Matt and the assembled hordes of the Dark. He slowly walks over, hand in his pocket until he's opposite Cauthon (sp).

"Well, well, what do we have here?"

"I'm about to lay down some some holy fire in the name of the Light."

"Well sunshine, it would appear that you have a little problem there."

"What's that?"

"Well, where as your gun has some little writing down the side that says REPLICA, mine has some writing down the side that says DESERT EAGLE POINT FIVE OH."

-- Hoping that you remember Lock Stock.

I wonder what other references to the modern world we have missed without realising.

Much as I say i would hate to see modern-day developments overtake our guys, I would love to see the following scene. HAve you seen Matrix? Neo in the Lobby?

Rand, Logain and Narishma walk into the Hall of the Stone, Rand in the centre.

Demandred steps out from one of the pillars, in the guise of a shaggy mare.

Rand "Bela!"

Demandred "No, 'tis I, Demandred."

Rand *shock!*

Demandred "I hold more of the power than the three of you could handle together, what can you have to defeat me?"

Rand opens his long, black leather coat.

"Well, personally I've got three automatics, two pistols, a shiruken and four hand grenades. What about you Narishma?"

"Well, I've got this banana left over from lunch. Oh, and a Chewit, it's got a bit of fur on it, but you're welcome to it."

Don't knock it, you could do a lot with a leftover banana and half a chewit!

Have you ever SEEN the mess a forgotten chewit can make in your pocket?

Blue Peter is what they need.

Random AS "Oh Woe is us, our 'angreal are all broken and old, Elayne is in labour with her children and we desperately need some weapons. All we have is a leftover banana, half a furry chewit and a broken ter'angreal".

BP Team "Not a problem, pass me that Persil bottle I'll have something made for you in no time. You wanted it to take people's heads off, you said?"

Oh, I have. Finding an old Curley Whirley in your schoolbag was the worst though...

Or a fizzed up bottle of tango, that stuff could take ink off the desks.

Anyway, we digress!

Although it could well be that TG will be fought (and very likely won) by kids of around 11, swinging their PE bags around their heads. I still have no idea what made them so heavy.

I'm not sure where in the UK you're from but in Yorkshire it's amazing the weapons the kids at school could make from random articles found in the classroom!

These days of course, they just carry kitchen knives. Lazy so-and-so's...

Meh, even a big scary trolloc needs his vitamins. Especially if he wants to avoid Mama Trolloc to not get angry at him for not eating properly ;D
