Souper bowl!  Kin-vs-Hunger!!

Super "Souper" Bowl of Caring....Kin-vs-Hunger!!!

A wonderful thing happens every at the beginning of the year...the SOUPERBOWL!! *grins* nope didn't mispell it either! A grass roots movement started back in the '90's with a simple prayer at a church service on Super Bowl Sunday:

"Lord, even as we enjoy the Super Bowl football game, help us be mindful of those who are without a bowl of soup to eat"

This simple thought inspired the congregation of a South Carolina church to plan an event to collect soup and money for the hungry on a day when the nation came together for fun and football.  The organizers choose Superbowl Sunday...and had youth at church's, youth groups like the Scouts and school clubs and community centers collect cans of soup and money for their local food banks.  The "Souper" bowl has also become a way of teaching and showing Youth how they can make a difference in our world!  Since that first collection the idea has grown to be a significant contribution to the hungry and the homeless.  The owners of several of the NFL teams, the President and numerous organizations endorse and support the Souper Bowl!  In fact, at the actual Super Bowl, food and money are collected from the fan's attending the game!  For more details you can check out thier official Website here:

So how is the Kin going to be involved?  Well, online we can't, but in our home towns, and communities, each of us can give a can of soup, or a dollar to those collecting for the Souper bowl.  If you are not familiar with any organization doing this...contribute to your local food bank!  Spread the word for Souper Bowl Sunday to friends, family and co-workers!  Encourage a youth group to get involved!  The actual Super Bowl this year is on February 4th!  By starting now...*grins* you have time to participate!  Then, come back here and let us know how you made a difference!  You will recieve 5 points for participation and 2 points for every can of soup you contribute!!

Online...the Kin are going to celebrate by sharing recipes for soups and stews with each other!  *grins*  We started last year..and I have lost the recipes given then...if Kelly, Ti ,Lor, Dae and Ursula would be so kind as to resubmit them please...?!?!?  The original idea was to put them in a recipe book and then mail them out.....this year we are going to expand on that idea!!!  Starting this month, with the soups and stews, we will be making the Kin's recipe collection!  There will be a thread at the Farm, called, "The Kin's Soup Kitchen".  Please post your recipes there.  Then each month this year, we will have a new catagory!!!  At the end of this year, I'll print them out and mail everyone thier very own copy!!!

*grins*  This is an awesome way to make a difference, to be involved and find out how you can help a neighbor!!    Don't forget your recipes either!!!

Actually the first time I did this was as a youth Director at a church.  It was super easy and fun!  The kids had a great time!  The second year..we collected all through January and built a football in the Foyer out of the can's donated!!

I have seen now, that several churches have a soup lunch....*grins*  they sell the actual bowl for the folks to take home....usually a hand crafted, pottery bowl!  That was really cool....another year they did a thing with spoons!!

That this has become a National event is amazing.  Growing from a little idea and becoming one of the biggest contributers to the hunger problem in America.  Imagine that if EVERYONE that watches the Super Bowl...gambled on it, talked about it..all gave just one can of food...how many people would have a meal?

Lots to be had.  Unfortunately, we have been bad examples of church attendance.  First it was crying children, then it was my wife's alternating weekends at work, now we have been away for so long it is hard to get things going on a Sunday morning.  :-[

oh I know how difficult it can be Sam!!  LOL from former Youth Director and maybe Minister...to no church home at all!!!

It's like developing habits..its so easy to make the habit of sleeping in..rather than a habit to get up and go on Sundays!  My husband is a trucker and leaves on SUnday aft...so now the excuse is he needs to sleep..and i sure don't want to go alone....

*takes a lesson from Lor, bumps the thread with her hip*

HEY!  anybody out there?  LOL...none of you make soup or stews or bread or yummy stuff?  Don't forget the Kin's Soup Kitchen at the Farm!!!

Has anyone seen any advertising for the "Souper Super Bowl"?  I saw a couple flyers at the bulletin board at the grocery store, and a blurb in the Church newletter!  Bill..who actually reads the newspaper...saw a column that talked about it in the community section....anyone else?
