So... I'm writing a story (Hoping it might be a book one day, if I can write more than usual) and...well, I've never been any good with numbers..

So, I have this world, and there was a battle. It was awful, because many people were killed by/because of magic. So, some powerful people decided that they would rid the world of all the memories of magic and dragons etc. Although, there were some people who refused, and some left with their memories intact because they knew there would be more people born able to use magic, and they needed them to learn how to use it. The story is set in the time where there is (supposedly) no magic.

The problem is, I'm wondering:

*How many years ago do you think the battle should have been? Considering that these people are still alive (the one's with the memories), yet there has to be a suitable amount of time to get the world back to normal after the battle/memory wiping.

*How old should people with magic live till? In a lot of books, characters with magic have quite long lives.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Thankyou for reading this.

p.s. Sorry if I shouldn't be posting this here... I wasn't sure where to ask.

How about making them semi-immortal. they can be killed (either through accident, physical violence or magic but would otherwise live an indeterminate time). This would give you the ability to set the Armageddon event several hundred to several thousand years in the past. But in any case make them be able to live several times the average lifespan.

Anyways, how far back in time would depend partially on the state of technology after the battle.  If a high level of technology survives then a shorter time period (Germany recovered from the devastation of World War !! in 20-30 years). A newer technology base would mean a longer time span./  Not only would it be harder to come back from the effects of the battle with a limited technology but the civilization itself would have to learn how to operate without technological advancements available before the break (whether the advancements were bases on magic or science or a mix).
