Torchwood is a Who spinoff, Empy... the main character is Captain Jack (the companion who died at the end of last season and who Rose - I think! - resurrected).

If you recall, Captain Jack's view of romance is, "One. Does it have legs?" and "Two. Does it have a phone number?"

Teehee.

I'm really liking Tennant. I know a lot of people were less enthusiastic about him than Eccleston, since Eccleston was a bit more of an authority figure and some (especially pre-Davison fans) prefer that. I heard a lot of criticism that David was too silly, but while he is at times, he also switches to being serious at the right times. It's almost as if he is better at putting across RTD's vision of the Doctor than Eccleston, who was superb in the serious bits but often criticized for the comic or eccentric scenes.

I actually missed the repeat of Rise of the Cybermen on Sci-Fi Friday because I was watching the World Series and didn't know that Sci-Fi had moved the time up (it used to repeat at 11PM central and now repeats at 10). Luckily I found the episode on Youtube, but had to leave my dial up internet on all weekend to download it all between internet drops and user errors..

Doctor Who has won the hat trick at the British National Television Awards again:

Dr Who scores TV awards hat-trick

Doctor Who has scooped three prizes at the National Television Awards in a repeat of its success last year.

The BBC sci-fi drama won most popular drama, most popular actress for Billie Piper and most popular actor for David Tennant, who plays the Time Lord.

.....

'Huge success'

The hat-trick of awards for Doctor Who was a sign the show has lost none of its popularity with David Tennant taking over the lead role.

Tennant's predecessor, Christopher Eccleston, took the best actor award in 2005.

"I think if my eight-year-old self could see me at the Royal Albert Hall winning a prize for playing the doctor on telly, he would need a stiff shot of Irn-Bru," said Tennant after collecting his award from Dame Julie Andrews.

The NTAs will be screened on ITV1 on 1 November.

Eww, they put the commercials in such stupid places too. That's what Chris and I are finding as we finally watch the show as it airs on the CBC (he'd been downloading it as it aired in the UK).

So... how do you all feel about David Tennant thus far? I like his character, but I can see how the ADHD/manic personality may not be for all viewers.

Anyway, he's much more interesting than the first Doctor - my husband is making me watch the entire series (including reconstructions of the 'lost' episodes...) and I've been pretty bored so far.

Though I haven't seen the full series due to a lack of a TV, but from what I have seen, he seems a good Doctor. I also think Tennant is a good actor. I loved his performance during the BBC production of Casanova last year. He is a talented actor, who will hopefully be able to play a variety of roles in TV and film production, and won't get stuck with one type of role.

Yeah, we caught Casanova a couple of weeks ago and thought it was terrific. It was easy to see why they wanted him to be the Doctor!

Interestingly enough, Tennant has been doing voice acting for the Doctor Who radio plays for a few years... but not as the Doctor! I assume he was using his native Scottish accent for that, though.

(I haven't heard him speaking in his native accent but apparently he's practically unintelligible.)

I like him. He is serious in the right moments, and if he was a bit too manic in the earlier episodes, he seems to be less so in the last couple (Girl in the Fireplace -which was brilliant- and Rise of the Cybermen).

Ha! I feel bad for you sitting thru some of those recons. My wife doesn't get how I can even watch them, and I'd never dream of trying to get her to watch them for fear of putting her off the series. I actually found after watching the recons that it is far more engaging and far more interesting listening to the narrated BBC audio versions of those stories. The narration does a much better job of fleshing out the action and maintaining your interest than still pictures.

I haven't seen Casanova, but I did enjoy his small part in Harry Potter (small in terms of screen time anyway, though not in relevence to the plot)

He didn't use his real accent in the Big Finish audios. Not in Dalek Empire 3 which is the only one I have listened to with him in it knowing that he is in it. (I may have listened to him in other audios before I knew who he was and not known it.)

Didn't he use his accent in Tooth and Claw? Or was that a 'cleaned up' version? I'm sure I heard him speak with his native accent in the Children in Need adverts for the CIN special back when I first watched it after it aired. It looks like all the youtube versions of it have those adverts removed though.

Here is a clip of an interview with him. His accent isn't unintelligible to me anyway:

I really liked Girl in the Fireplace. Slightly off topic, Chris and I saw a really nice portrait of Madame de Pompadour at the National Gallery in Scotland...

LOL ... Doctor Who is actually the only thing my husband and I argue about - I keep having to tell him that forcing me to watch ISN'T going to make me like the series more... but we have a system, anyway. I work on my crafts or play Sims 2 while he watches Doctor Who... I mostly just listen to it and if the story is really engaging, I might pay closer attention.

I'm pretty sure that was a cleaned-up version. It's my husband who says he's hard to understand... but then, he had trouble understanding people when were in the UK a few weeks ago (actually, Dumfries area and Edinburgh in Scotland) while I didn't have any trouble. He can USE a Scots accent, just can't understand one ;)

For me I prefer Tennant, I like his attitude to it all...amusing, witty, fun and serious...but like someone said its all in the right places.

I'd say his scottish accent is quite soft compared to others I've heard.....I do like any celtic accents though...except Cornish (sorry)lol.

Well,Mickey's gone now.

(Just watched Rise of the Cybermen)

A darned shame, too! I liked him much better as a companion vs. Rose.

But for those of you who really like Mickey, he will in fact be back in the last two episodes. He's actually able to travel between dimensions to help thwart the Cybermen's attempt to take over our world.

The Doctor returns after an off week here in the US this Friday. I have to question taking a week off in the middle of a two parter, though maybe it helps to get fans to come back after the off week to end on a cliffhanger.

Still no work on if Torchwood will come to the US. I'm wondering if anyone who has seen it and is knowledgable about US tv knows whether content wise it would even be able to air on US tv, with our strict censorship guiedlines.

And for any interested Doctor Who fans, fansite Planet Skaro has moved to http://www.planetskaro.org.uk/ There will be a Doctor Who news section up soon, and there is a forum as well. :)

Torchwood is not for the younger viewers, Tinks (my six year old) loves Dr Who but I would never let her watch it. All the episodes here are shown after 'the nine o'clock watershed.' They believe that only older children (in teens) would be up then!

i don't know if you have the same thing over the water or not.

Well, we do have the TV rating system with TV-MA for shows with Strong Sexual Content, Violence, and Language. Still, language like the F-word or S-word don't really make it, and also, the sexual content is usually the non-nude variety, or nudity from behind not showing any frontal unless it is obscured.

Just noticed that the advertisement banner has Doctor Who Season 2 box set today. How cool is that?

I actually missed the final two episodes of the season on their debut night a few weeks ago.. turned out that the VCR was on a different channel than three, and no one knew because the TV/VCR button was turned off, so we taped static instead of DW. The younger daughter (1 1/2 yrs) must have been playing with it.

Turns out Sci-Fi channel is having something of a season 2 marathon this Friday though, so we will tape it then.

BTW, if anyone missed the first season, BBC America has been showing the episodes. :)

I love Dr Who, but the new series lost me somewhere in the first season and I can not seem to get the want back to watch it again.

Got some gossip...

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the BBC is refusing to deny various press reports saying that David Tennant will be leaving the show Doctor Who after the current season finishes filming.

"He is totally committed to filming the third series, which goes on air next spring, but it's too early to say anything about any future series," a BBC spokeswoman said. "I don't think a fourth series has even been commissioned yet, although there probably will be one."

Multiple British tabloids have suggested that Tennant plans to leave the show following this year.

I believe The Sun reported that he would leave halfway through season 4 because he has been getting lots of movie offers since starring in Harry Potter. The rest of the tabloids repeated that story.

As they said, a fourth season (and even a Christmas special for 2007 for that matter) has not been commissioned yet. But really only time will tell.

As a matter of amusement, someone else then reported the Jason Statham had been tapped to be the next Doctor. Not likely both since he is already a movie star who has had leading roles in film (which would probably price him out of the shows range) and becuase he is mainly a burly action star, which isn't really in line with the character.

I love both the old and new series. Where exactly did it lose you? I thought the first season was pretty good. Much different from the classic series, but still good. The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances was probably my favorite episodes (two parter). That was later on in the series so you probably missed it.
