History:

Her mother’s dresses always looked so fine, so beautiful, sat there in the wardrobe.  As inaccessible as the moon to her eight-year-old self, she knew one day she would have the same range of choice but it rankled that she couldn’t have them now.  Toulan had a wardrobe full of dresses but they were nothing like her mother’s.  A beautiful child, she would use her looks and put on an air of fragility when she wanted something.  She would try and battle with her brothers for favouritism from their mother and father, elegant and stern with varying amounts of success, but that did not matter for anything.  The servants would always joke that Toulan could twist anyone around her little finger as she was such an adorable child, and as she grew up she decided to fine hone these arts into a useful skill.  She found that people would tell secrets around her, believing she was a total innocent.

She always knew their family was different.  Superior, in some ways, to the rest of the world and Toulan could feel it.  Perhaps it was growing up knowing the Great Lord of the Dark watched and guided their steps, ever seeking to further His aim.  Watching the adults from places unseen, Toulan would spy on the servants and would watch how the prettier ones would use their faces and figures to entice the grooms and menservants to do what they wanted.  It fascinated her.  There was a definite power that women had over men and sometimes, she noticed over other women too, and Toulan wanted to know all about it.  As she appreciated her mother’s dresses, each one a masterpiece, she began to appreciate beauty in other areas.  She studied art and dancing, and always paid careful attention to her dress so that she herself could be a living piece of beauty and art.

Shortly after her fourteenth birthday it was remarked that she was indeed a beautiful girl who took very much after her mother.  Toulan preened inwardly and knew she would be presented to more people – now she would be able to watch more people of her own age.  After another two years she was allowed a little more freedom and could then begin to follow her own pursuits – if only mildly hindered by the curious interactions of her brothers and the watchful eyes, albeit from a distance, of her parents.  Now, instead of merely watching the servants, now she would wait until things looked as though they would get interesting and conveniently forget something so she could walk in on them.  Of course, the young men would all look at her, their current exploits conveniently forgotten as they saw her beauty compared to the uncultured rough attractiveness of the serving girls.  Compared to her, everyone looked lesser, apart from her mother.  The cruel glares of the girls were a sweet tonic to her eyes, bringing a cold smile to Toulan’s lips.

It did raise an interesting point, however.  A family as powerful as her own would very much need protection and, if Toulan were to pursue a career that would please her father as an artist as she had planned, then some self-defence lessons would be a must.  Of course it would be a complete cover.  Toulan’s love of beauty was only matched by her determination to pursue a career where she could use her beauty.  And relationships still fascinated her, more than merely watching and the control she had.  With the right training, Toulan would be able to glean any secret from any source and indulge her curiosity.
