Levana Edenye was born to an Amadician merchant who had married an Andoran woman on one of his travels to the north and then brought her with him to Amadicia. She grew up in her father\'s house in a small village not far from Amador, as the family preferred the peace and quiet of the countryside. She saw little of her father for most of the year, as he kept his trade in the capital and often went away, leaving his wife and children at home.

Levana has three brothers, and she is the youngest of the siblings. Being the only girl, she is the favourite of her mother, who has spoiled her with toys and nice dresses full of lace and ribbons.

Although her uncle serves the Children of the Light, she has had very little to do with them, except the brief visits of her uncle, who never paid much attention to the little girl. His interest were always with her eldest brother, who admired their uncle.

Levana always thought she would live a quiet life in Amadicia, probably marrying a wealthy merchant or possibly an officer of the Children. Little did she know that her mother had made different plans for her.

At the age of fifteen, Levana\'s mother decided to take a trip to visit her kinfolk in Andor, and after gaining her husband\'s blessing to bring the two youngest children, they set off on a travel that would take long weeks of travel.

Levana, not being especially adventurous, took some time to start enjoying the travel, as she\'d been looking forward to make an entrance into the society of the upper middle class in Amador. She spent the first few weeks reading novels deemed fit for young ladies. They were of the romantic sort, often with knights in shining armour saving maidens in distress. These made her think of the young officer who had accompanied her uncle on his last visit, meaning to instruct them again on the pure faith in the Light and telling them to be wary of the Darkfriends lurking behind every corner. Levana heard none of it, and she had heard it all before and could recite it to the last letter. Instead she kept her eyes discreetly at the dark, young officer, who looked very handsome in the uniform of the Children.

Levana sighed very often, and tried to ignore her mother\'s sharp gaze, but still felt a slight blush colouring her cheeks. Her brother, only a year older than her, noticed nothing at all, he stared out of the carriage to catch everything he could on his way. He had given up on engaging  his sister a long time ago.

They stayed a couple of days in Lugard to rest and fill their provisions. The Inn they stayed in had a common room that was accepted as decent by their mother, and the evenings there, with dancing and young men wanting to court her, cheered up Levana. Perhaps the time they would spend at her aunt\'s house in Caemlyn would be exciting after all?

They had stayed in Caemlyn for two months when Levana realized that something was not as it should be. Her aunt and her mother had been whispering and looking at her sharply, as if they were examining if she was a freak for some time. She never caught what exactly they were whispering about, just some few words like \"Have you considered what would happen if she..\", they always cut off before she could find out what it was all about. Her brother was no help to her, he just shrugged it off and said they were probably thinking she might fall in love with a man their father and uncle would disapprove of. When her brother left them to go back home, she was alone with her evermore paranoid thoughts.

Then one morning her mother woke her early and rushed her into a dress fit for visiting a lady of nobility, a thought that sounded ridiculous to Levana. But for what other reason would she be wearing a dress made of silk that early? Usually they would wear a fine wool, especially since it was winter.

\"Hurry! You need to go with your aunt on a visit!\"

\"Will you not come with us, mother?\" she asked.

\"No, but your aunt wants you to come.\"

She tried asking her aunt where they were going, but got no answer that she could make any sense of.

At last they entered an Inn in a wealthy part of the city. After a brief chat with the Innkeeper, they were led into a private dining room, where they were left to wait.

Levana noticed that her aunt looked nervous, making her feel terrified. If anything made her sturdy aunt nervous, it must be terrible, indeed.

A little later, a tall, dark lady, clad in a dress of green silks, with white embroidery, entered the room, followed by a middle-aged man who looked like a warrior.

Her aunt made a deep courtesy and Levana copied her, to make sure not to offend the lady, who must be a noblewoman.

When looking at her, Levana felt somewhat confused, as she could not guess the lady\'s age. She looked young, but there was no youth in her eyes.

\"So, this is the girl you wrote me about, Mistress Andra?\"

\"Yes, my lady. I would not have bothered you with my request, but as I\'m sure you understand, we do not want to take any risks,\" her aunt replied.

Levana felt deeply troubled by this, still having no idea why she was here.

The lady smiled and studied Levana keenly.

\"Do you know why you are here, child?\" the lady asked.

\"No, my lady.\"

\"I am no lady, child. I am Mareen Archfell, Aes Sedai of the White Ajah.\"

She stopped there, waiting to see the girl\'s reaction. Levana felt her face grow hot, and suddenly wanted to run out of the room.

\"Darkfriend!\" The word escaped her mouth as whisper.

The man, standing by the door, shifted, as if ready to react, and she noticed the sword hanging from his belt.

\"You have been taught by the standards of the Children of the Light, child. The Aes Sedai are not Darkfriends. Please sit with me by this table, I have been asked to test you.\"

\"Test me for what? I am not a Darkfriend, I will not go to be trained by witches!\" All the tales her uncle had told the family about the witches in Tar Valon sprang into her mind, all at once.

\"You need not worry, child. It is rare that we find girls with the ability to Channel the One Power. Please calm down, once this is done you can forget you ever met me.\"

The witch\'s smile held a command Levana felt compelled to obey. Her aunt had retired to a corner, her face pale as she stared at them.

She sat in front of the witch and stared at her with deep suspicion.

She nearly fell off her seat when a small, golden ball of flame appeared over the witch\'s hand.

\"Look into the flame and focus on it. Ignore all thoughts, be one with the flame.\"

The woman repeated the instruction several times, until Levana managed to focus. Just when she thought she felt a drop of sweat on her temples, she felt something change inside her. The Aes Sedai let the flame disappear and examined her gravely. Levana stared back at her, and after what felt like an eternity realized why the woman was in such a serious deep thought.

\"No!\" she whispered, \"I am not a Darkfriend!\"

\"No, so now you know that the Aes Sedai walk in the Light. The One Power does not make us evil. You will have to come with me to the White Tower in Tar Valon, child.\"

\"But nothing happened! I did not do anything!\"

\"But you felt a kind of understanding, did you not?\" The Aes Sedai smiled sadly. \"You will have to leave your old life behind you.\"

Levana turned to her aunt in panic. \"I cannot go with her! My father would never let me go to the witches, and if he finds out I saw an Aes Sedai, my uncle will learn of it too, and have me and mother accused as Darkfriends!\"

Her aunt sighed, and after a while replied.

\"Dear niece, it is for the better that you never return home. Your mother and I have discussed this at length, and she will return soon to Amadicia and tell your father that you fell ill and could not come with her. It might be to the best if your kin in Amadicia think the illness took your life.\"

\"I can\'t go!\" Levana pleaded, but her aunt would not be moved.

\"We are leaving today at noon,\" the Aes Sedai said, looking at her aunt, \"have her ready with a horse and the clothes she needs for the travel.\" With those words, the Aes Sedai left the dining room, followed by her male companion.

Pleading to her mother while packing, did not help her. Tears were flowing down both their cheeks, but her mother had decided that she had to leave.

\"Sweet daughter, you must understand that you can never return to your father\'s house, or even to Amadicia. They would find out, and who knows what might happen if you do not go to train now that you know you can learn to use the One Power?\"

At those words, Levana realized her mother was controlling feelings of fear, probably close to her own feelings of terror.

The farewell came too fast, she had only had a little more than an hour to pack and try to convince her mother to let her go back to Amadicia, when the Aes Sedai and her companion came to the house.

\"Please take care, my love,\" her mother whispered. \"Send word to your aunt of your life, and she will let me know how you do. Never send anything directly to me, as it could be traced to the Tower. We cannot take any risks so close to the Children of the Light.\"

Levana nodded, unable to speak.

She climbed the horse, already planning to escape the Aes Sedai as soon as she could. She simply could not go to the Tower!

Levana never got a chance to escape the keen eye of the Aes Sedai and her companion, who turned out to be her Warder. And they traveled by ship from Aringill, and as she could not swim, it would be impossible to escape from them. Much too soon the White Tower and the city of Tar Valon appeared. The feeling of terror made her blind to the sights of the city, all she could see was the tall Tower, getting ever closer.
