[GAME] The PS3 catch 22....

The following story is tailored made to throw kerosene on the growing console flame-wars:

Game-makers Eidos has confirmed that it won't be releasing most of its major PS3 titles until next year, because the console's installed base will not be high enough before then.

CEO Jane Cavanagh said, "We believe that PlayStation 3 will be a successful platform, and are developing technology and products for this console. However, as we do not believe that the installed base will be high enough until the second half of our 2008 financial year, most of our major product releases on the PlayStation 3 platform are not scheduled before that date."

So there will be more games when more people buy PS3s. And more people will buy PS3s when there are more games. So all we need are enough people willing to buy a system without games so that developers can profitably create titles to please the people who didn't buy the system when there weren't enough games. Or not.

Stupid Sony. It makes me laugh though. My friend and I were debating whether the PS3 was worth buying, or if we should just get Xbox 360's earlier today. Well, guess I'll have to tell him the news.

Sony wants people to buy more games because the PS3's are only making them like $14 a unit or something like that. The games is where they are making they're money, that's why they want people to buy games.

The Los Angeles Times is reporting on the console wars. If you've been following the story, you already know most of the details, but here's a summary:

* People aren't buying as many PS3s as some would hope.

* Many gamers say "I'll buy it when there are some better games.

* Sony says: "We'll be okay. This system will still be relevant in 10 years; a few million sales now are nothing."

* People are buying Wiis in huge numbers.

The new piece of info in the article, though: Kyoshi Shin of the International Game Developers Assn. in Japan said that a large number of Japanese game makers were shifting their focus away from the PS3 and towards the Wii. "When people talk about the PS3 on chat forums," he said, "they say it's like going to a very expensive restaurant and not getting anything to eat."
