I have a theory on what we are seeing in the books and the current tv show. The book give us the live view of the events of the ending of an age and the true story of the times of the Dragon Reborn.
 

The tv show is fast forward as the wheel has turned for about 1500 years we enter a tavern and Rafe the Gleeman is trying to tell the tale of the Dragon in common chant. Many things have been lost as the wheel has turned but you can still get the basics of the story like Lenn and his trip to the Moon.
