  1. OOC:  I am really sorry for the delay.  DM's getting better, but life's getting weirder.

IC:  Daird smiled.  It was rare for the society leader to actually approach a potential member, but not unheard-of.  It generally occurred when it was fairly obvious in which direction a prospective would go.

The prospective would generally regret their decision at some point, no matter which society they chose.

"Each society is different," Daird replied.  "I cannot answer for the other societies, but petitioning to join the Sovin Nai is simple."  Waving his hand towards the unoccupied circle, Daird strode calmly into the center.  "In the Sovin Nai," Daird said in a clear voice from the circle, "nothing is given.  Everything must be earned, even the right to petition."  Shrugging the tension out of his shoulders, Daird lifted the veil at his neck, shielding the lower part of his face from view.  "No weapons, no quarter.  If you are to join us, you must prove that you are capable of joining us."  Shifting his stance, Daird readied himself.  The duel was always the same: a method to determine an aspirant's abilities, to gauge whether or not they were ready for the extra training that would be required of them.  Memories of the nearly contemptuous ease of Daird's first petition to the society were quickly quashed.  He had been unready, and the Society Leader had known it.

Maybe Cairen was ready.  There was only one way to know.  "Come.  Let us dance."

  2. After some time away because of CloudFlare issues, I seem to be regaining my ability to access DM.  Now is just the fun part of getting things going again after my absence.  To start that, let's just see who is around.  Format is as follows:

    Handle

    Character

    Division

    RP Idea

    Favorite Drink

    Handle: Quibby

    Character: Pahl Ebersol

    Division: Medics/Services

RP Idea: Characters take over cooking duties for a meal

    Favorite Drink: Absinthe

  3. Zathrus will be a full-fledged member of the Band when he joins up; part of the arrival RP for the Band is signing the register.  You'll get your own uniform, you'll get assigned to a company, and all the dysentery you could ever hope for.

Sorry for getting in so late to this conversation.  I'm still having trouble with CloudFlare.  Today just happens to be a good day.

  4. "Do not worry yourself about the knives," Daird said, refusing the proffered blade.  "We are the Sovin Nai.  We have plenty more."  The young warrior seemed... deflated somehow.  As if the details of the raid had lessened him.  It was no matter.  Daird only knew what he had seen, and he had offered his opinions to the Clan Chief, but only he currently knew everything that had been reported about the raid.  He wanted to share the information with Cairen, but that would mean acknowledging the younger man's reaction to the news, which might bring him shame.  Daird had no reason to do that to the man.  Instead, he looked the man in the eyes and asked, "Do you have any thoughts about which society you wish to join?  I am willing to answer whatever questions I can about my own society and others, or I can even direct you to those who will have more answers than I."

  5. "The raid?  It could have been worse.  Most of the dead and the gai'shain are young; it seems that this raid was organized and led by hot-blooded spears who were little more than children.  I recognized two older Sovin Nai helping to lead the retreat."  Daird shook his head and sighed.  "The Shaido must be growing weak or complacent if they let such ridiculous acts occur."  Daird let a moment of silence into the conversation; there was joy in battle, but there was little honor to be found by killing untested spears.  It was better to take them gai'shain and let them learn patience.

Allowing a small smile to cross his face, Daird turned his attention to the young warrior that he had seen before the raid.  "As for you, young one, you handled yourself well today, both in the duel and in the battle.  You also managed to avoid waking from the Dream.  I appreciate that; I do not like the idea of my knives being handled by a dead man."

OOC: Sorry for the brevity.  It takes me a few posts to really understand a new character.
  6. There has already been some talk about things for the Band to do on the march back to the Citadel (i.e., the menagerie).  I'm wondering if anybody else has some ideas for things we can do.

What I have for ideas so far mainly deal with plot-specific events involving Calder and the DotNM.  I'm looking for things other than anything dealing with that.

  7. Two things:

I don't see how she managed to develop a block in a week, especially after having been shown that she can channel by an Aes Sedai.  As far as I could tell from the books, blocks took time to create, and they existed to protect those who channeled without knowing it.

I also don't understand how a young woman of sixteen who lived a solitary life with only her parents in Braem Wood not only learned the Great Game, but mastered a version of it that would confuse a Cairhienin.

  8. As soon as her notes were arranged, Janine waved one of the attending Accepted- most likely a Brown aspirant- to her table.  "Would you please go search for these titles?  I'm afraid that I do not know where they are.  If you need help deciphering my handwriting, I will be somewhere in the botany section."  As the Accepted curtsied and disappeared into the stacks, the bells outside the Library began to toll the hour.  Janine nodded to herself as she stepped into the stacks, wandering to the tomes on plants.  One of the new flowers in the Tower gardens was one with which she was unfamiliar, though she knew it came from southern Illian.  She had a novice- Nyanna al'Dyn, she thought her name was- collecting a sample for her, and she was supposed to meet Janine in the library... well, now.  Dismissing the novice from her mind, Janine returned to her perusal of the stacks.  There were three books concerning the indigenous plants of Illian, and she hoped to discover the-

A novice, not quite paying attention to where she was going, came around the corner and ran into Janine.  Before Janine could say anything to the absentminded child, she gave a start and, reaching into the basket she held like she was searching for a weapon, turned and struck Janine blindly.  Janine heard the faint crackle of plant stems being broken open, and a scent that could only be described as 'rancid' began to permeate the air between her and the novice.  For some reason, Janine found that she was not surprised that it was Nyanna, the child she had sent for... the...

There was a moment of utter stillness; Janine looked at the novice without expression, and the novice looked back with a look of disgust, probably from the scent that was growing stronger.  Wordlessly, Janine looked down to the front of her dress.  She was not surprised to find a large purple stain on her bodice, which seemed to be the source of the odor.  Slowly, her eyes moved from the stain to the novice.  Nyanna's dress was an absolute disaster, though Janine was not surprised by this, either.  She had been digging in the gardens, after all.  A novice who could accomplish such a task without grass stains and mud on her dress was a novice who was not actually doing the work.

Janine shifted her gaze back to the novice's face, her face carefully controlled.  She did not know whether to be furious or amused by the whole incident.  However, novices were expected to maintain some sense of decorum, even when up to their elbows in soapy dishwater.  With a sigh, Janine finally broke the silence.  "I assume that this growing purple stain is from the flower that I requested?"  Not waiting for the girl to reply, Janine continued, "Child, I expect that you have an explanation for why you were dashing about a library.  More to the point, though, I expect you also have an explanation for why you would blindly strike out at somebody you bumped into in a library."  The words were delivered in the cold calmness that Aes Sedai wore like a mask.  It would not do for the child to realize just how close Janine was to outright laughter or storm-like fury- she was still not sure which it would be.
