  1. Hi everyone,

As we gear up for a major website upgrade (including improved forums!), I need to run some occasional tests and take the website down. I will generally try to do this in the evening, after 9 PM U.S. Pacific time, GMT -8 (the time used by the server).

During this time the forums and most of the website will be inaccessible. No data will be lost. Everything is backed up on a regular basis.

Thanks for your patience. If you have any urgent issues, please email help@dragonmount.com

    Thanks

  2. Thanks for your donations and support, everyone. Some quick replies:

    - I've not investigated the coding editor, but if there's a way to keep it, we will.

    - Yes, Cloudflare is needed for both performance and security. Is there a specific thing it's doing which limits you in in some way? If so, I can investigate.

    - Killashandra: JordanCon is always looking for volunteers to help out. They would love your assistance. Check out their webpage for more info. If you can't find details, send them an email.

    Jason

  3. *stumbles in drunk, shirt untucked, holding a bottle of whiskey*

I hear Jenn's on trial.  Is it too late to chop off her head?

I know 3 facts, 2 of which are true:

    1. I taught Kathana how to drive
    2. Jimmy once defeated me in a sword duel for her hand in marriage
    3. I appointed her Amyrlin Seat of the White Tower on Day 2 of Dragonmount's opening after she sent me a funny fan fiction story.

Oh, and 15 years later, people STILL think we're married.  *shakes fist at Jimmy*

  4. Dun dun dun dun!  NFL Football season is here. I don't know about you, but I'm a huge football fan. (Sorry overseas people, I mean American Football, not "soccer")

If you follow my personal twitter account ([twitter]jasondenzel[/twitter]), you may know I'm a huge San Francisco 49er fan. I was talking smack on twitter the other day when I jokingly told another WoT fan that Colin Kaepernick was the NFL's version of the Dragon Reborn:  Same height, same weight, muscular, mixed parentage, arm tattoos, incredibly talented beyond most QB's (including many star veterans), and has had a meteoric rise to fame.

If that's the case, I'd suggest that Russell Wilson is Moridin.  There is no doubt in my mind that Pete Carroll is the Dark One.......

So chime in... who, from the NFL is who in Randland, and vice versa?  (But don't mess with my Kaepernick claim)

PS: Tim Tebow.... Logain? (Think about it......)

  5. Welcome to the "I've finished the entire series just a little while ago and need to say something" thread.

Need to laugh? This is your place.

    Need to cry? Bawl here.

Want to [respectfully] curse at the ending? Go for it.

Need to hug somebody? Find a friend and squeeze.

Try and keep your reactions semi-short here. Longer responses can be saved for other threads.

    Ready? Go.

  6. I do study Choy Li Fut. But I'm not too advanced. I've only been doing it for about a year. I love it though, and am progressing quite nicely so far.

Robert Jordan never indicated to me that he practiced martial arts. I get the impression he studied martial arts in the way way a historian would study history. But I don't think he ever formally trained.

  7. Hi everyone,

I just sent this same note to the DM staff, but realized it's appropriate to share with all of you as well.

Beginning tonight (Sept 16), I will be on a 4-week leave of absence with minimal access to DM, email, or anything. While I won't be TOTALLY OFFLINE (ZOMG!), the intent of this "personal retreat" is to cultivate some silence, reflection, and good energy for myself.

I will be travelling during this time. About a week from now I will be visiting Brandon Sanderson's house for a few days and staying with his family. They were very kind (and brave) to invite me into their home for this time. In addition to getting all the fun AMOL secrets1, I plan to do some of my own writing and hope his crazy-prolific writing powers rub off on me. I'll probably document that experience on the DM twitter and Facebook pages. Myself or somebody on the the DM staff will mirror it over to the forums and front page as necessary. So be on the look out!

After that I'll be alone in the Rocky Mountains in Colorado for several weeks. Assuming I don't get eaten by a bear, I will return on October 17th.

And if any of you are paying close attention, you'll notice that I am leaving on this personal retreat on the anniversary of RJ's death, and returning on the anniversary of RJ's birth. I didn't plan that.

    ... Cool, huh?

Anyway, I wish you all the best for a month. Be well.

    Best to you all,

    Jason

    1: Yeah. Not really. ;-)

  8. Sorry you feel that way, Frost Wynters. I assure you we're not trying to take advantage of anything. I'm a big believer that the WoT franchise will continue beyond AMOL. (Movies, games, comics, new books possibly, etc) Nobody at DM is in this for the money whatsoever.

Donations are fine. But Jenn and I decided that instead of just asking for money, we would offer something small in return. We've had people sign up for these accounts with no intention of using the chat room.

    Why We Are Doing This

Some people have questioned why we are doing this. I'd like to be very clear that we are not trying to "milk" you, or take advantage of anybody. DM will always be free to everyone. We're not going to hide news or WoT content from you if you don't have a premium account. What this is is a way for people to help support this website and get something for it in return. We turned down the idea of asking for donations and instead wanted to offer something in return for your assistance. The DM chat room and larger PM inboxes have been asked for for a long time. And the other perks (both current and future) are things we feel will make your time at DM here more enjoyable. Especially if you are one of the thousands of people that hang out here on our forums so much every day. As time goes on we'll add new features. If you have suggestions for those features, send me an email at Jason@dragonmount.com.

    Thanks!

  11. Hi everyone! Brandon asked me to collect names of people we wanted to die in the final novel. Haha, just kidding.

I'm just curious which of the major "good" (ie, non-darkfriend) characters you think will die -- and not come back-- in the final WoT novel. Vote and discuss!

  12. I've experienced a lot of cool things when it comes to the Wheel of Time. But last night at the Sacramento book signing, something happened that was pretty surreal for me, which I guess is saying something.

As the signing itself began, Harriet "insisted" that I sit at the table with her and Brandon and sign the dedication page for Towers of Midnight.

Let me let that sink in: Harriet asked me to sign copies of Towers of Midnight with her. So for the next 4 and a half hours I sat there and signed 350-400 copies of ToM. It was such an honor to be asked to do that. Part of me still isn't completely comfortable signing RJ's books, but both Harriet and Brandon assured me that it was the right choice, and so I am deeply grateful.

There were some other nice perks too. Meeting 400+ fans was awesome, of course. Some of them had gifts for Brandon, and (shockingly) some had gifts for me. Take a look:

In 1996, a book called Barlowe's Guide to Fantasy was published. Amongst other neat things, it had an encyclopedia-like entry for Trollocs. I only saw the book once in stores, but couldn't afford it at the time due to my limited college funds. In the years since, I've regretted not stretching my money a little because I wasn't able to ever find that book again, or even remember the title.

Well last night, Bailey (a Tower Guard) brought her copy and showed it to me. When I explained how excited I was to actually see the book, she handed it to me and said I could keep it. I've since learned that the book is out of print, but used copies can be found. Here's a picture of the cover. Notice the trolloc in the upper right corner. Here's the link to Amazon, where you can generally find some inexpensive used copies if you're curious. :narg:

I also received a few packs of MAGIC cards, although not as many as Brandon did. The coolest ones I received were the custom cards that fan Mike P made for both Brandon and I. Take a look:

My favorite gift received last night though came from another Tower Guard, David. He told me that he lived in Japan for a while and thought I might like this shirt. It's simply amazing, and I'm flattered that he offered it to me:

I am so privileged to be a part of a community like this, and profoundly humbled that so many of you enjoy the things we do here at Dragonmount. I know the gifts above are just tokens of a larger appreciation, and that only makes me want to work harder to continue delivering quality content on our site.

Oh one more thing. I totally ran off this this poster after the event. :baalzamon:

  13. Thank you for everyone's patience and understanding. My review has been approved (for the "spoilers") and posted

    http://www.dragonmount.com/index.php/News/tom/i-have-read-towers-of-midnight-r36

I realize some of the stuff I had written down in my draft caused some stir. Basically it was just left over from my initial brain dump of ideas. And apparently too I am still learning about how this news / forums software works. I've reported the bug to the people who made it.

If you guys have questions about what I said in my review (even the draft version), drop me an email. I cannot, of course, comment on spoilers though.

    Jason
