Length of series - This is only really a complaint you'll hear when a series hasn't finished yet. There have been plenty of series that went longer than RJ's and to me dragged on much more. Yet they're still enjoyable, and generally people don't complain about the length because they're usually aware of how many books there are in the series. Fans of this series started to get anxious though, that this series possibly wouldn't get finished when it was apparant that RJ's health was declining, and this frustration translated to wanting to throw blame around for why it wasn't finished yet. I really have been more than irritated at the implications I've heard that Team Jordan was milking us for money, which doesn't even make any sense when you consider how successful sequels and WoT spinoff stories could have been. It's obvious to me that Jordan was an artisan, and cared deeply about the masterpiece he was putting together. To think that he would let that story be influenced by personal greed is just a shock to my senses.

Which series have this many books? The only one I know of is the Deverry cycle by Katherine Kerr.

Xanth Novels, Malazan series, Sword of Truth, Chronicles of Amber (10 unless you count the prequels 15), Riftwar Cycle, Drizzt series, then you get all into the extended storylines in the worlds like Forgotten Realms, and the world of Magic the Gathering, and so on and so forth. And some series go way longer than the ones I've mentioned.

Ah I was thinking of a series with the central characters. True about Xanth. I haven't read any of those in years.

    Amber has that many? Wow.

  2. Just started reading TGS. Avi's pov while they are approaching the manor house, thinking she will lay a bridal wreath at Rand's feet.. isn't that backwards? In WH's she said she would pick up his wreath if he laid it at her feet. Did i get that wrong?

No, I think she was trying to be 'wetlander-y' in WH's Lily in Winter. What we learned of Aiel marriage practices in TSR matches Aviendha's thoughts from TGS.

    Ah..ok. my bad..I'd forgotten that.

  4. No, not stated by a character. It was all just speculation and I believe a RAFO until Flinn healed the Sisters I mentioned to their full strength at which time it was confirmed by RJ in his blog I think around the KoD release.

Thank you very much Finnssss for answering my simple question with a simple answer. I was under the impression that not every fan remembered every word of every book & certainly most(like me) had never even thought to read his blog or check his interviews. I thought that if they did, there would be no need for this thread to exist & Luckers knew that when he created it.

But have the characters figured this out yet?

  5. it's an act so dark that only those in the service of the Dark perform/condone it. That could've been a reasonable explaination except that none of the male/male Forsaken has had that kind of punishment, not even hinted at by what I recall.

Yeah, I don't think that's it. We have instances where rape or rapers are mentioned with no apparent connection to DFs:

Beside the wide arched gate into the city, a long platform displayed, on spikes twenty feet above the ground, the tarred but still recognizable heads of over a dozen men and two women who had fallen afoul of Seanchan justice. Above them hung the symbol for that justice, a headsman's slant-edged axe with the haft wrapped in an intricately knotted white cord. A placard below each head announced the crime that had placed it there, murder or rape, robbery with violence, assault on one of the Blood.

Quite aside from all the sunken ships and dead, freeing damane was another death penalty charge, and disgusting besides, in the Seanchan view, as bad as rape or molesting children.

Seems not. And tbh I find the point odd that in a female dominated society there would be no rape/rape attempts. I don´t think that was RJ´s point.

You also have Morgase, who was raped by Valda. That is a quite big one, as it allows Galad to feel that he was right to kill Valda even though Morgase turned out to be quite alive and well.

Finding out some jerk raped my mother, turning him into sausage would be the best scenario for him.

  6. True, true; I'm gnashing my teeth going thru WH.. and CoT yet to come..I haven't decided if I'm going to read Cot or use Wot Encyl. summaries for it. Cot is just.. bad there's no other way to describe it. and Gormenghast is.. different, it's hard to describe..but Steerpike would fit right into Wot backstabbing nobles and cut throats heh.

In the last 30 years, I have read over 1000 books, and I have never ever before in my life have even heard of Peake and Gormenghast. So, if he is such an awesome writer, and that is such a great trilogy, then why is it such an unknown piece of work to anyone like myself?

Gormenghast is quite epic and different. It came out awhile before fantasy took off, and that's why you may not have heard of it. Give it a try. Peake is well known as a poet, as a writer not so much.

  8. I bet Quint was reallly pissed...

    I....don't know what that is.

Well that was very entertaining but it's only left me more confused! I'm sure I'm missing something obvious here but I don't know what it is.

Hooper (Richard Dreyfuss) is the guy with glasses who is tying the barrels. Quint (Robert Shaw)is the guy with the harpoon gun.

I was just making a small joke about Hooper instead of Hopper is all.

  9. Yeah, basically Jain went into the Blasted lands in a mission that 'some say took him all the way to Shayol Ghoul' [Glossary], though how anyone would know that remains a mystery. What we do know was on his mission in the Blasted Lands he disapeared. Next a man rocks up at Stedding Shangtai, messed up by the Power and talking about the Dark One blinding the Eye of the World, and Ishamael states ''Jain Farstrider, a hero... whom I painted like a fool and sent to the Ogier thinking he was free of me.'"

Finally we have Noal's memory problems which date to around that time, and it tells a pretty clear tale, Ishamael captured Jain in the Blasted Lands and messed with him, before he either escaped in truth (and Ishamael was lying to cover the shame of the escape) or, Ishamael genuinely did send Jain to the Ogier... it's been suggested that the whole thing of the threat to the Eye was faked by Ishamael and Aginor and Balthemel sacrificed in order to bring Rand into the game, similar to what happened later with Semirhage.

The Bad guys can't win because they are too busy killing each other.
