  1. Probably a very stupid Q but can someone teach me how to make quotes (as per poster) when making replies? I've tried numerous times on my own (T&E) but don't get it.

Cheers and much appreciated (in anticipation)

If you hit the reply button on a post, it automatically quotes that post for you in the response.

As far as putting something else in a quote, you use [ quote] What you are quoting! [/ quote] minus the spaces in front of the q's

If you wish to attribute a quote, do it like this, using single quotes ' ' :

[ quote name=book, chapter, person, etc] what you are quoting [/ quote]

again, leaving out the spaces before the word quote.

  2. Was it ever confirmed that Halima didn't compel Egwene at all? I think all we were told that she did 24/7 on the Oath on her own.

It got me thinking. Obviously, Halima made her view her in a better light (made her dismiss anything bad about her).

What else? I'm doing a reread and to me it seems quite certain that Egwene was influenced to the worse. On Rand, for example.

Sorry, csarmi, I don't quite follow - who are the 'her's here? (BTW, I agree with you  )

  3. Um. As to the nature of the link I have a theory that seems to explain many things, and differs from your version somewhat:)

I think that during crossed stream episodes, the threads of Rand and Moridin has melded together somewhat, resulting in several effects.

First, the link makes them close -nearly one, but not quite. So that when it activates, Rand sees Moridin just from the side. Also, it makes them nearly indistinguishable from the "global" point of view -such as the Source or the Dark One. Then, when Rand is accessing saidin, but does not have control yet (or when he releases it), from the point of view of Saidin it is like TWO male access points are calling it - which result in (impossible) male-male link, ambiguity and severe dizziness/disorientation for recipients, until one of them resolves it by taking control of the flow.

Also, the way Rand accesses TP is through that link (he did see Moridin's face upon activation, in TGS), and the DO may not be even able to tell that it is not Moridin drawing on his power. Whether Moridin can use TP at the same time as Rand is debatable. Also, Rand does not feel any sickness upon drawing TP, since there is no ambiguity -all power comes from a single access point - Moridin, just being drawn through the link like the usual power circle, only more permanent. Just IMHO.

(Also, it would mean that Rand can still access TP. Any one think that DO will end up like The Great Serpent, with his behind in his mouth?)

Fascinating thought. A man-man circle is not possible with saidin - but it may well be possible with the unisex TP!

  4. Interesting thought, that. In a diamond, carbon atoms are arranged in a pyramidal lattice which is very strong, unlike the hexagonal lattice of graphite or the 'football' lattice of buckyballs. (I refer to the European football which, these days, is in hexagonal and pentagonal sections.) If you could perhaps persuade iron atoms to do some similar trick, you might get something interesting.. Of course industrial (or even pre-industrial Randland) iron is far from pure and contains about 1% carbon, which might actually help!

  5. We are told in CoT17 that cuendillar is made by weaving Earth, Air and Fire onto iron. We also know that weaves (at least Gateway weaves) can be unpicked, though it's dangerous. Could the cuendillar weave also be unpicked?

Wouldn't that require that the weave is still active ? If it was a one-shot (as it seems to be), then you couldn't unweave it.Plus , the material's own nature kinda throws a wedge into that plan.

A Warder bond is not an "active" weave (from what we've seen, the weaves settles on the person and disappears) yet it can be removed, according to RJ himself. My guess with cuendillar, as well as with the Warder bond, is that it takes a special sort of Delving weave to find it, then it must be unraveled. Given that Nynaeve and Damer both seem to have an awesome talent for Delving, I would bet that they could find a way to destroy cuendillar given a bit of time.

A sideways thought.. The dissipation of the Warder weave on the death of his Aes Sedai might be what causes the 'death rage'. Astonishing it doesn't kill him, thinking of what happened to that gateway!

  6. The weave must affect metal during the turning process, no matter how quickly it transforms. RJ knew enough about physics to be aware of this.

As for being immune to the OP - is this actually said? The Glossary says that 'Any known force used in an attempt to break it is absorbed, making it stronger', but any Aes Sedai worth her salt could find a way around that wording

It also throws a wedge into forming the stuff in the first place..

  8. There's still a difference between Mat's actions and Rand's. Mat has killed at least two women, without hesitation if not without remorse: Melindhra, who tries to kill him after hearing that he intends to go to Caemlyn, and he throws a knife, fatallly wounding her (TFOH51); and Renna, when they are travelling with Valan Luca, she stabs Egeanin and flees, and Mat and the Redarms go after her and he orders his men to shoot her (CoT29). I believe he also killed a third unnamed DF woman but I can't find that reference right now. Rand wouldn't even do that- not until, much later, he mercy-kills Liah, the Aiel woman who was lost in Shadar Logoth (ACOS41).

didnt rand slay an anomomous df woman on his way to tear?

Ah yes - TDR36. He's in Murandy at the time.

  11. Hi everyone,

Just wondering if anyone else noticed but whilst reading the wheel of time books every now and again i would come across small pieces of writing at the bottom for example: in The Eye Of The World pg 719 at the bottom it says E.O.T.W. - 33 and i know it shows up in the other books as well.

Was wondering if anybody had any idea what they were about, because they only pop up every now and again and dont really correspond to anything?

    Thanks For Any Replys Given

I've never seen what you're describing. What edition do you have?

I've seen numbers like these before, and I think they are something to do with the organising of printing and binding the pages. That is, the pages are sorted into batches of N1 pages (including the introductory ones giving details of title, author, publishing history, and so on). and the book is bound by combining N2 such batches. If this is what they are, they should appear at regular intervals. Have a look and let us know!

  12. There are theories of the universe which propose a Big Bang, expansion and cooling, ending in the 'heat death', followed by contraction and collapse in the Big Crunch, followed by another Big Bang. I wouldn't like to say what WoT Ages might correspond to these, though.

The heat death of the universe is a different theory, actually. It refers to the possibility that the expansion continues forever, and when the stars die out, the universe dies from a lack of energy -- i.e. heat.

Ah yes, of course. Getting a bit lax in my terminology, sorry.

To change the subject a bit: What is Birgitte's 'life status'? She appeared in T'A'R with a 'dream body'; she was expelled in that body by Moggy; she was kept alive - or given life - through the Bond with Elayne. If that Bond snaps, she would, I presume, die instantly. So is she a more-solid-than-usual ghost? We know that she can affect the physical world by e.g. shooting arrows at Nynaeve; she can fight; she can eat and drink. But just how real is she? And is it relevant? I have this thought of her asking Elayne to release her Bond so that she can go back to T'A'R, ready to be reborn 'properly' and meet up with GC when they both reach a more compatible maturity.
