  1. Could anyone tell me in what book & chapter (if known) was it that Tuon and (Semi) her first Truth Speaker were talking about collaring Rand?

Tuon doesn't know about the Domination Band IIRC.

    I disagree:

Tuon nodded. She herself was not sure at all. That sort of sureness could lead to the Tower of the Ravens even for her. Perhaps especially for her. "I must find a way to make contact with the Dragon Reborn as soon as possible. He must kneel before the Crystal Throne before Tarmon Gai'don, or all is lost." The Prophecies of the Dragon said so, clearly.

Anath's mood changed in a flash. Smiling, she laid a hand on Tuon's shoulder almost possessively. That was going too far, but she was Soe'feia, and the feel of ownership might have been only in Tuon's mind. "You must be careful," Anath purred. "You must not let him learn how dangerous you are to him until it is too late for him to escape."

It reads to me like the original plan was for Tuon to leash Rand.

Meaning, I think that it requires women channelers.

Oh, I don't see any reason to assume a sul'dam wouldn't be able to use one.

How come in this whole world, supposedly as vast as our real world, has there ever been only 1 single language for all the peoples.

That's because the entire world was united in the Age of Legends for over a millennia, so all languages have merged into a single spoken tongue. Nowadays, different dialects have started to appear again (we have mentions of accents), but the world still pretty much speaks the same language.

Besides, I have 1 other thought, who the hell is Jack-o the Shadow which is referenced in the song?

Could it be an important character? Or only a metaphore of death?

It's another name of DO, like Caisen Hob, I think. Or maybe just Death. I'm not sure why I think that.

  2. Come on, Durinax, Mat had plenty of PoVs in TDR, and the first time we hear the dice is at the end of the book. It's fairly certain that that was the first occurence:

Ahead of him, the Stone of Tear loomed over the city, impregnable, a fortress besieged a hundred times, a stone on which a hundred armies had broken their teeth. And he had to get inside, somehow. And bring out three women. Somehow.

With a laugh that made even the sullen folk in the street look at him, he headed back for The White Crescent, uncaring of mud or the damp heat. He could feel the dice tumbling inside his head.

Also, while I searched for that scene, I found this next Dream of Egwene's, which might relate to the dice in Mat's head (though it doesn't tell us much about them):

There had been dreams of Mat, too. Of Mat with dice spinning ‘round him – she felt she knew where that one came from - of Mat being followed by a man who was not there - she still did not understand that; there was a man following, or maybe more than one, but in some way there was no one there - of Mat riding desperately toward something unseen in the distance that he had to reach, and Mat with a woman who seemed to be tossing fireworks about. An Illuminator, she assumed, but that made no more sense than anything else.

  3. Oh, it's something alright, but we have no indication as to what it really means. A few things we do know:

    a) It started at the end of TDR, when he came to Tear to help the supergirls. Hence, it can't have anything to do with the 'finns.

    b) It might have something to do with his luck. If so, the question of where his luck's coming from becomes relevant. On that, RJ once commented that in a way, it's similar/connected to the DO's luck. It's not something Lanfear did to him in TV, and it has nothing to do with the dice ter'angreal stolen from the Tower.

That's everything I know on the subject.

  4. After the white-haired Aes Sedai left, Moiraine gathered her cloak and, muttering to herself, went into the garden. There was something in what Vandene had said that tugged at her mind, but she could not remember what it was. An answer, or a hint to an answer, for a question she had not asked-but she could not bring the question to mind, either.

    [...]

"And will you find your answers where you are going?" Vandene asked.

"I may already have found one I did not know I sought. I only hope I am not too late. I will need pen and parchment." She drew Vandene toward the house, leaving Adeleas to deal with the Draghkar.

That passage has bothered me ever since I've first read it. Do any of you know what it was Vandene said that Moiraine is referring to? The last part is probably about the Blacks' involvement, but Moiraine's first comment can't be about that.

Please, would someone answer me? Pretty please?

  6. Can you heal burning out?

The traditional answer had been 'No.'

    [...]

So, yes 'burning out' can be healed.  But along with my previous statement, the healing would be different.

Actually, regardless of what's written in the books, RJ confirmed that Stilled channelers can still sense the Source, while Burned-out channelers cannot.

Regarding Healing, as we've only seen Stilling (and Gentling) Healed very recently, it's too early to say if Burning-out could be Healed as well. The question has been RAFOed on several occasions (and if memory serves, this one is an on-screen RAFO, i.e. we will eventually FO).

  7. Essanik Cycle [seanchan version of Prophecies of the Dragon]

If I'm allowed just a small correction, the Essanik Cycle isn't parallel to Randland's Karatheon Cycle, it's a different set of prophecies given by Seanchan damane (hence it didn't exist before Luthair arrived at the Seanchan continent). The part about Rand kneeling to the Crystal Throne appears in the Seanchan Karatheon Cycle, and that's the part that was apparently tempered with.

Also, BS confirmed that there has been tampering with one if not both of those (he was unclear if that's regarding the Seanchan version or the Randland one), but he did not name the culprit.

Regarding the seals, and the cuendillar focus points: what force is causing the cuendillar to weaken? I'm aware that it can be destroyed by the TP, but what would cause an FP to break when inside Nynaeve's washleather purse, for example?

Might it be the taint itself? We know from LTT's memories that the Seals weren't perfect because of it. Anyways, I thought it worthwhile to mention BS said there's another way to break cuendillar except for using TP, and that we'll see it in ToM.

Regarding Nyneave's purse, I think whatever it was only worked to weaken the Seal. It broke due to physical damage it sustained during their travel to Salidar (the girls didn't think to try to protect it, since it WAS cuendillar).

  8. Why dident Moridin show up to the cleansing?  If he did I bet the Chosen would have won.

It's also been suggested that Rand's sickness is somehow related to his connection with Moridin, and that it affects Moridin as well in some way (might be the reason he doesn't channel sai'din at all). If that's the case, he might've been unable to do anything while Rand was channeling through the access key.

  9. Is there a difference between a male channeler bonding a female channeler and vice versa?  For instance is there a difference in the bond that Logain has with his 2 AS since he was the bonder and the bond Merise has with Narishma since she was the bonder?  I ask because certain weaves differ between men and women such as Healing. IIRC Healing was described a little differently whenever Flinn healed somebody.

Here're some things I thought relevant to your question:

Crossroads of Twilight book tour 28 January 2003 - Edmonton, Alberta

Q:  Is it possible for an Aes Sedai to bond someone Asha'man style?

RJ:  Yes, if they learned the weaves. The Asha'man know a lot more about bonding than the Aes Sedai. Some guy figured out how to bond their wives, and then they started concentrating on other things they could do with the bond. The Aes Sedai never experimented, just passed on what they knew.

Knife of Dreams book tour 30 October 2005 - Emma reporting

Q:  How is the bond the Asha'man use different than the Warder bond of the Aes Sedai?

RJ: The bond is different because it contains that Extra Bit about obedience. Aes Sedai bound to Asha'man are compelled to comply with the demands of the men. While Aes Sedai can do this to their Warders, it requires work each time. (He mentioned that Logain thinks that extra bit can be easily removed, but that the Asha'man feel this is EXTREMELY necessary. A Warder would not kill his Aes Sedai when she turned her back, but the Asha'man have NO such safety with their bound Aes Sedai.)

BTW, mb, I don't thinkk it's actual Compulsion that's involved with the AM Bond.

  10. It gets lost. Ask yourself this: what's the oldest artifact WE have of times past? How old is it? When did we found it (by this I mean, what did the people living a hundred years ago, before most of our technological advances, know about our past)? (my guess is we probably now have proofs of culture from about 30K years ago, but before that? Of course, we theorize that there wasn't any human culture before that, but RJ's world is different)

  11. Rand has much the same thought when he Travels to Abou Dar. The thing is, the Seanchan only seem to bring justice and peace. In reality, their culture encourages slavery and oppression. Things might seem nice most of the time, but the one time it doesn't work that way, your life as you know it would be over (if one of your family members starts channeling, or if you accidently stare into some noble's eyes and get declared da'covel, for example).

Plus, the lands they've taken so far were weak, with no real sense of nationalism. You can't see an Andorean/Shainari soldier fight for the conquerors of his nation, do you?

  12. yeah, i was talking about the Chosen not going after Fain. but then again maybe his own brand of evil creates enough discord  for him to actually aid the Chosen in an odd sort of way. the trollocs and Isam in the two rivers did seem to work in Fain's favor.

How would the Forsaken (I don't get why some of you guys use Shadow lingo even when you're not discussing the frame of mind of a DF. If I remember correctly, that made RJ uncomfortable as well) go about catching Fain? He's not high profile like Rand or even Mat/Perrin/the supergirls. He goes where he wills, does his evil and fades back into the background. We know he believes that if he's unfortunate enough to stumble on one of them, he's dead.

  13. Is it impossible to enter Finnland from TAR, or impossible to enter TAR from Finnland?  I remember reading that one of the two can not be done.

    Here you go:

Q: Also, what was going on in Aelfland when Mat went round and round and round the same location? Were they traveling in time?

RJ: Not traveling in time. the physical laws of nature differ. Mentioning the Dark One here is bad luck. In Aelfland, it is really bad. You can not go to Aelfland in Tel'aran'rhiod (similar to stedding).

  14. Can't remember where this was mentioned and it's been bugging me for a while now.  What caused the blue flash when Thom fought the Myrddral in Whitebridge?

Metal / metal violent contact can do that.

Not exactly. We only see that happening in Randland when specific kinds of weapons are used. While RJ wasn't completely consistent on that one (or maybe he was, and I just can't make sense of it), I'll add everything relevant I found on the interview database (http://www.theoryland.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=372):

Letter to Pam Korda from RJ - 1995

Q: When Fades use their swords, we often see blue flashes when the Fade blade hits another weapon. Is this an interaction between the Fade blade and a specific sort of weapon (such as other Fade blades, or Aes Sedai-forged swords), or an interaction between the Fade blade and any iron, or is it just a special effect with no special basis?

RJ: The reaction is specific. The Fade's sword striking Power-wrought metal.

Netherlands tour, Dromen and Demonen chat - 6 April 2001

Malivar: Do Myrddraal blades flash blue lightning regardless of the blades they strike? Or does it require a power wrought blade? If so, why do the two Fades fighting in the Stone make the flashes?

RJ: Myrddraal blades produce the blue lightning only when they strike their own kind of blade or a blade wrought with the One Power, not simple steel.

Malivar: If a Fade's blade will not produce lightning except against other Thakan'dar wrought blades, and power-wrought blades, why do Thom's daggers produce it when he attacks the Fade at Whitebridge?

RJ: Thom's daggers did not produce the effect. It was produced before Thom reached the Fade.

    USAToday Chat - 5 January 2004

NY, NY: Why was there a blue light flashing when Thom met the Fade in Whitebridge?

RJ: Because Thom's best knives are very special indeed.

    DragonCon 3 September 2005 - Emma reporting

Emma: I started asking him about the two conflicting chats. [This is referring to the USAToday and Thus Spake quotes about the blue flashes Rand saw in Whitebridge as Thom fought the Fade.  - Terez] The question was already sent to him, but he declined to answer it for the Q&A session. I was wondering about why he would do it, but as you might guess when reading his answer, it's because its a RAFO question.

Both answers on the chat are RIGHT!!!! He knows exactly how Thom managed to escape with only a limp and how he managed to survive that. But he might use it in the next book and doesn't want to give away anything. So we have to do it with the knowledge that both answers, although seemingly conflicting are both CORRECT.

  15. I assumed that Tuon meant that she told the AS who knew healing (Sherian-Mylen?) to demonstrate the weaves in front of other damane. That would be enough to teach them. Once the damane knows, the sul'dam can just tell her to heal when necessary.

Yes, but that would imply that sul'dam usually tell damane what to weave rather than weaving themselves, thus explaining why the a'dam can't be used to make an AS into a weapon. That's not the same as using an AS's ability once she becomes a part of a circle.

'we know Nynaeve channeled through Moghedien'

At that point, Nynaeve hadn't taken the oaths. I don't think she has yet.

Yes, yes. The issue is not whether Nynaeve acted against the Oaths, but rather whether a sul'dam directs her damane to do as she wishes or simply guides the weaves for the circle.

  16. A few issues.

First, the chocking isn't just the effect of conflicting Oaths. See Siuan in NS, she starts saying something (about not squealing quite so hard when she was a novice) and is cut short. The same with Beonin when Egwene confronts her after they meet in the Tower (KoD).

Second, I take RJ's response to mean a sister wouldn't be able to join a circle if she suspected she might be used in a way that contradicts the Oaths. However, the thing with damane AS does seem to support what you're suggesting. But perhaps, most sul'dam use the a'dam to force damane to form the weaves rather than weave them their selves (what I remember of Egwene's capture seems to support this), and this of course can't be done with AS (you can't use punishment to make them ignore the Oaths). Actually, this issue is important, and we seem to have contradictory evidence. On the first hand, we know Nynaeve channeled through Moghedien, and that every sul'dam can prevent threads from being formed. On the other, Tuon thinks about having taught the weaves for Healing to her damane, implying even other sul'dam could now direct them to Heal (i.e. Tuon didn't simply learn the weaves herself). I'd love to hear your opinion on that.

Third and last, we have a lot of cases where a damane/sul'dam dies and the other doesn't, that doesn't seem to harm the one left standing (I'm offering this as examples of how circles behave when a member gets killed, albeit forced, and degenerated, circles).
