Frolicking In The Snow

The light streaming through the windows battered against Fior's eyelids until he reluctantly awoke. Arching his back in a catlike stretch, he turned onto his side and saw that Sahra was still asleep. She must have gotten done with training late. She still hadn't returned when he had gone to sleep. Standing up and crossing the room, he splashed some water on his face and pulled on a shirt. As he stood there, watching her small frame rise and fall slowly, a slow smile spread over his face. Picking up his boots he moved towards the door as quietly as he could.

Once out in the hall he put on his boots and headed outside. He was still smiling when he stepped out into the crisp, fresh air of the yard. Looking him he tried to find an undisturbed drift of snow and set to work. It took little time to pack the snow into three small balls. Grinning broadly now he stood and headed back to his room. Opening the door as quietly as he could, he saw that she was still sleeping soundly on her side, facing the wall. Barely suppressing a laugh at what he was about to do he took careful aim and let loose. The snowball shattered into a million pieces as it collided with her rear.

Sahra bolted out of bed and looked wildly around the room trying to get her bearings, but there was no way she could miss the laughing Fior standing in the doorway holding the two remaining snowballs. Seeing her face redden, Fior tossed a second snowball at her, hitting her in the shoulder. He was out of the door before he could see her reaction and bolting for the yards chuckling the entire way.

Fior Canain, Trainee.

Eating hot chocolate chip cookies, enjoying herself in a bathtub, dancing with a faceless red-haired young man and kissing and snuggling afterwards... Sahra was having a beautiful dream and if she had been aware she was only sleeping, she would have never wanted to wake up. And this morning she could stay in bed for as long as she wanted since it was her and Fior's free day. Waking up indecently early for months now and with only one free day every ten days, it was a luxury. Suddenly she was shocked from a deep slumber into blinking awakeness by something colliding with her bum and experiencing cold wetness. Out of reaction she jumped on her feet wondering if this was her mentor's doing and she had counted the days wrong and she was late and... When she realised who had thrown the ball, she prepared to give her room mate an earful. Only he had another snowball in readiness and it landed on her shoulder spraying her face with sharp and cold bits. Fior's laughter trailed along the hallway and even though Sahra was tempted to crawl back into the bed and sleep some more, this demanded revenge.

At summertime Sahra usually slept in nothing but her small clothes but the winter in Tar Valon was too cold for that to be comfortable. She pulled hastily a sweater and training pants over her thick nightgown and donned her cloak and boots and rushed outside. The daylight was blindingly bright and as she blinked to clear her vision, a third snowball landed on middle of her face. Spluttering she cleaned her face and cursed herself for forgetting her mittens. Her first instinct was to charge the guffawing Fior but he was much better grappler than she was so a better strategy was to keep at long range and pepper him with chilly ammunitions. She had a good aim and she caught Fior on the right cheek. The sight brought a grin to her lips and she begun to feel that it would be good day after all. They had such a great plan for today but first there was a war to finish.

Shaking the snow off his face as he rapidly rolled another frozen projectile, Fior shouted to Sahra. "Bet you can't hit me again." Hurling his snowball at her as hard as he could, he turned and dove over a fence into a drift of snow. Sticking his head up to see where he'd hit her, he was rewarded with yet another face full of frozen bits and cursed himself for not dressing more appropriately.

Chucking another snowball over the fence at her he began running in a low crouch along the fence, hoping it would provide him with some cover...

Letting out a surprised ouch when a snowball thrown at full speed caught her in the belly, Sahra crouched low and did her best footwork to keep on the move and out of harm's way. With Fior hiding behind the fence, she bid her moment and caught his head as he peeked out. It was pretty hilarious after him just declaring that she wouldn't hit him. "It is hard to miss a big head like yours!" she called with a voice tinged with mirth. "And what were you betting on? Your well-shaped bottom freezing before this is over?" She began to run in zigzag pattern toward the fence with the intention of landing on the same side than him and giving him a snow wash.

Hearing her footsteps nearing, Fior stopped and reversed direction, waiting. Within seconds she was over the fence and, though he caught a face full of snow, the broad shouldered youth tackled the emerald eyed vixen, tumbling with her through the snow. Straddling her stomach, Fior used his weight to hold the wrists of both her hands crossed above her head with his left hand. Raising his right one in a gesture that spoke of impending ticklement he cocked an eyebrow and asked, "Truce?"

Fior had the advantage of size and technique on Sahra and in the end he pinned her down on the snow under him. She struggled a bit just for a show but they both knew that she wasn't serious and that she couldn't escape even she was. She exaggerated a look of terror on her face at his threat of tickling and grinned and nodded agreement to the ceasefire. Only he didn't get off her immediately. She eyed him wonderingly and their gazes locked and held for a moment. She started feeling awkward first and pushed her back on an arch over the ground and lifted him up complaining loudly about his supposed fatness to which he quipped about her flabby abs. This was a familiar game also and one that always ended in a stalemate. She couldn't move him away completely but in turn he could never get the small of her back on the ground which was the winning condition. Fior stood up and she accepted his helping hand. They brushed snow off each others and went to change into sturdier winter clothing. The weather was fairly mild today since you could roll snowballs but they both could read the signs that told of intensifying cold. But they would be well back before the curfew and the biting night air.

After two years of sharing a room and using the common bathing area, they were both accustomed to changing clothes in front of others. Fior wasn't blushing anymore like in the beginning when she had deliberately stared while he changed clothes to fluster him. Sahra had found it pretty cute actually. She congratulated Fior for his organising skills since he had already arranged them food for the lunch. The only other things they needed to pack were blankets for their snowy picnic and Sahra's skates that were tied on shoes. For Fior they needed to fetch a pair from a friend of Sahra in the orphanage, but first they would have breakfast in the common dining room for the Trainees. On the way they bantered as usual and joined the table of couple of other mates. They heard again the same old tired jokes about being the horse and carriage and the speculations of which was which. Many seemed to consider them some kind of an icon and even a pair. The latter they of course weren't: they were just really good friends, not friends with benefits.

With full bellies and cheery moods they set out toward the orphanage, both carrying a sack hung nonchalantly over the shoulder. The skates were waiting as agreed and no one had any idea of their secret plan of going much further than just the boring old pond in the Ogier Grove. No, this winter and this partcicular day Sahra was going to show Fior a special place only few hours away that she had visited many times as a child. It was of course breaking the rules since the Trainees weren't allowed to leave the city without their mentors or special permission but no one would notice it since it was their free day and they would return before curfew. They had the perfect plan and nothing could go wrong and ruin their adventure.
