She stood over the bed, misty and wavering, one hand resting on the bedstead, the other gripping an amber rod angrily. Her blue eyes were measured and considering as she watched the bed’s occupant toss lightly against the heavily starched sheets. In a chair beside the bed another woman stirred restlessly, a sword at side. A silent gesture from Lanfear calmed the woman’s dreams and the Chosen moved closer to seat herself at the edge of the bed.

They’d woven heavily with Spirit and Water in an attempt to repair the damage she’d done. Even as the Aes Sedai slept the weave worked over her ravaged features, soothing and repairing. She really was quite beautiful, Lanfear thought her eyes narrowing, Or had been. But even with half her face a melted ruin slathered in some peasant remedy the beauty was still apparent.

Half of her looked a fairy tale, long dark lush lashes spread over a rosy, perfectly proportioned cheek. The other eye was devastated, bulging and darkly bruised, its lashes burned away, bright blood vessels leaking down one cheek like tears. What an interesting contrast.

Poor dear, she thought her smile turning wicked, you won’t be able to see yourself in the mirror. And Lanfear knew how Jaydena loved to admire her reflection. She’d seen it in the woman’s dreams, seen many things in the last day and night. A tall woman with a sword haunted them constantly. But not the woman in the chair. And there was another woman, small and dark haired, with intense gray eyes and a cold expression. Jaydena loved the first and hated the second, both emotions raw and intense. Lanfear had tweaked them a bit, laughing as she did. Shaping dreams was so…empowering, and Jaydena’s were already so despairing it was quite easy.

These new Aes Sedai have no idea of true healing. If Semi where here…ah but that would hardly help. There was no doubt the other Chosen could save the eye and repair the scarring but so unlikely she’d choose to do so. I am more generous, dearheart, though I’ve not much talent for healing. But I can do this.

She leaned closer, dark hair falling softly over the perfect half of Jaydena’s face as she wove “My gift to you†she whispered almost lovingly. “Remember my gift.†And she severed the healing strands sharply. The patient cried out softly but slept on. A moment later a thick cable of Spirit darted into the hole where the Green Sister’s eye lay weeping blood. As the Chosen drew back the lid fluttered, then opened to reveal the bright emerald center, healed and whole.

“I aim to misbehave

Jaydena sat in the bushes, she was within Sirayn's secret garden. She recognized that white roses with their black thorns. She could feel one of those dagger like thorns stabbing into her leg, yet she didn't move, she didn't care. The scene in front of her was to painful and to entrancing. At that moment she could have been attacked by a fist of Trollocs and she wouldn't have blinked an eye against the people in front of her. Her thoughts were fairly fuzzy and she never even stopped to wonder how she had gotten into a garden that was locked to everyone that didn't have a key. Sirayn Sedai and any of her mintees that might have been trained in the art of caring for this sacred garden. She should have wondered how she was hiding in the thorns but she didn't know, she should have wondered how though she sat in a bush she was only being stabbed by one thorn instead of a hundred, but she didn't. Her emerald eyes were intent, she reached up and touched her face and realized that she only felt one side of her face. The other side was a scarrred mass, her eyes was swollen shut and she could tell that she would never see again. Frankly it was quite ironic that the woman in front of her had only one eye and yet now that she was scarred to the woman would still reject her. Especially after what she was seeing here. She focused again on the two people and saw that they had began to speak. Weaving quickly and hiding the weave though she didn't wonder how she knew how to do that, she could hear them clearly. "She disgusts me, did you see her cowering in pain. Just one little burn and she couldn't even stay awake, she loses her famed beauty and she falls apart. I had my hand cut off by my own son and I took the pain, I never cried about the loss of my hand." Jaydena winced for she had had much the same thoughts about herself in the day since her burn.

Seia who sat across from the woman sneered, "I can't believe I ever loved her, she's so weak, what a disgusting human being. She dosen't deserve to be called Aes Sedai, and certainly not Green. I wished I have never been with her, I wish I hadn't wasted all those years with her and chosen you from the start." Jade lowered her head, once she had loved Sirayn and sometimes she felt she still did through all the rage and hate. Seia had been her lover, her soul mate, her wife, and it had all ended when Seia had fallen in love with Sirayn. Maybe they had always loved each other, maybe that had been sneaking around behing her back all those years. She barely noticed the tears that streamed from her one eye as the two women embraced and began to kiss each other with a passion that Jade no longer was privy too. Trying to close her eyes she realized that she couldn't close her eyes or lower her head, she was forced to watch the two women. Seia began to remove Sirayn's clothes and Jade felt the rage grow. So they had been making love behind her back, that little prude Sirayn always saying she would not be a slut, and she had been one the whole time. All those times the ring had been removed and this just proved it. As Seia began to make love to Sirayn, laying her on the soft grass, and sucking her neck. Jade wept in rage but no noise came from her mouth. If she hadn't lost her beauty, she might have been able to entice Seia back. Now she had nothing, Sirayn was lovely, she was smart, wise, and strong. All things that Jaydena lacked in spades and could never hope to gain. Suddenly as she started to bite through her lip at the pain of seeing them she heard a voice whisper in her dream. She leaned closer, dark hair falling softly over the perfect half of Jaydena’s face as she wove “My gift to you, Remember my gift.†She cried out softly and felt her eye flicker open in the dream, she reached up and touched the eye. She could see from it. Sobbing softly she stopped biting her lip and wondered where the words had come from...

The humming was soft, soothing and hypnotically melodic. A woman, certainly, with a light voice and a playful twist with a tune. As it grew increasingly louder Jaydena became aware of herself, turning and twisting amid a sea of sheer white curtains. The curtains billowed around her, caressing and teasing. No matter where she turned there were only more curtains fluttering and dancing in a non existent wind. Taking a hesitant step forward again and then another, but nothing changed except that the woman had begun to sing.

My love ran away upon a white charger

My love ran away upon the high seas

My love ran away with my heart and another

Adventure and riches are waiting for thee

Suddenly music swelled in a giant crescendo that was very nearly violent. Jade covered her ears as the horns, lutes and drums quickened the beat and the woman’s voice grew even louder. The curtains suddenly spiraled upwards in a great swoop leaving her standing alone in the midst of a glittering ballroom, dancers turning in tight circles around her. The walls of the ballroom were mirrored, casting endless reflections and light across the room. Candles burned in four large chandeliers suspended from the ceiling. Waiters, dressed nearly as fine as the guests, wandered the room with large trays of goblets, expertly stepping aside when necessary. Laughter mixed with the music as ladies prettily curtsied to their partners before swinging into the next step. Jade blinked in confusion as she spun in a slow circle, clutching her skirts. Men and women in outlandish costumes twirled around her, jeweled masks glittering. Here a man festooned in feathers and rubies wearing a mask sporting a large steel beak. There a woman disguised as a Mermaid, green scales sending rainbows onto the marble floor at her feet, her long tail trailing her. Another woman dressed scantily in what appeared to be the skins of a wolf danced by, her eyes flashing gold behind her emerald mask. Her partner wore all black silk, including his mask, with diamonds flashing at his throat and left ear.

Abruptly Jade found herself dancing as well, swaying and shifting to the tune in the arms of a woman, long black hair falling free past her shoulders festooned with moons and stars, blue eyes twinkling mischievously from behind a silver mask.

My love ran away in the softness of summer

My love ran away with the passing of spring

My love ran away with my heart in her hands

Cradled within a raven’s dark wing

“You should learn to dance to your own tune, Jaydena.†They twirled together across the floor, skirts fluttering. “Your own tune and no one else’s.†Dazed Jade watched in fascination as the woman’s face melted, changed. And quite suddenly she found herself dancing with Sirayn, whose grey eyes were as cold as ever behind a mask of green silk.

“Really Jaydena, you choice of costume leaves something to be desired,†Sirayn twisted her mouth contemptuously. “Can you never get it right?†Somehow the Captain General of the Green Ajah had grown red horns over each delicately arched eyebrow and in place of graceful dancing slippers Jade could glimpse shining black hooves beneath her green skirts. Horrified Jade tried to pull away but Sirayn was so very strong. She twisted Jade’s arm as they moved into the next step and Jade cried out softly. A tapping at her shoulder had her turning with relief.

“May I cut in?†Seia, dressed as a pirate in colorful silks, stood beside her and for a brief, heartstopping moment Jade felt hope. But just as quickly it faded as Seia swept Sirayn into her arms and danced away, after one disgusted glance in her direction.

My love ran away with hope in her heart

My love ran away with stars in her eyes

My love ran away with no thought of me

And all I have left are echoing lies

Bereft she turned away, blinking back tears and suddenly caught sight of herself in one of the mirrored walls. She was wearing her finest dress of emerald silk, her formal shawl across her shoulders. Her hair was elaborately curled and jewels at her ears and neck glinted in the candlelight. But one half of her entire body, skirts, bodice, neck – everything was blackened and burnt, tiny tendrils of smoke leaking into the air around her. She put her left hand to her hair and the grayed curls fell away in ashes.

She screamed.

Jaydena was being plauged with dreams, she knew it and she didn't know what to do about it. Her dreams were warded and when Lwena had noticed the circle on her good eye she had handed her a tea, a bath soak, and lotion that aided in sleep and told her firmly to use it. Raisa was so worried about her that her faithful gaidin sat next to her as she struggled to sleep. Jade knew that Raisa was suffering from lack of sleep as well and Jaydena had put some of the mixture in Raisa's tea as well before they went to bed. Knowing that if she didn't sneak it into the tea her gaidin would refuse to take it. She would have woven a weave over the woman to make her sleep but she couldn't weave even the smallest thing. If she didn't know better she would say that she had lost the ability to channel. Yet it was still there and it grew stronger every minute. Today she had stirred the breeze and had felt like a novice touching the source for the first time again. She struggled to sleep and finally the herbs kicked in and she fell into the nightmares again. She heard humming and suddenly she looked around her and saw that there were billowing sheer white curtains floating on a breeze that she couldn't feel. She took several small steps forward and noted that the woman had started to sing.

My love ran away upon a white charger

My love ran away upon the high seas

My love ran away with my heart and another

Adventure and riches are waiting for thee

She chuckled softly and felt sympathy for the writer of the song, oh yes indeed her love had run away as well but with her best friend and turned up dead, the turned up alive and picked her friend over her. Shaking her head as the loud music started she and the curtains spiraled toward the ceiling and she stood in a mirrored ballroom. People were dancing all around her, candled shimmered in large chandeliers, waiters moved swiftly and gracefully through the guests. She heard the laughter and wanted to close her ears against it. Nothing in her life was funny or joyful anymore. People were dancing and she blinked in confusion as she looked at their costumes. The people continued to dance around her as though she weren't there and she gazed at a woman dressed like a mermaid and a man with large jewels on him. A sneer graced her lips and she vowed she would never dress that outlandishly. The most surprising thing about all these people was that they all wore jeweled masks over their faces. Like they were trying to hide their faces from each other. Suddenly Jade was dancing as well and in the arms of a woman with long black hair that was secured with moons and stars. Jade saw the blue eyes behind the silver mask twinkling at her as they danced.

My love ran away in the softness of summer

My love ran away with the passing of spring

My love ran away with my heart in her hands

Cradled within a raven’s dark wing

Jade winced at the lyrics to the song and managed to keep her face composed as the woman began speaking to her as they twirled. “You should learn to dance to your own tune, Jaydena. Your own tune and no one else’s.†Suddenly the woman's face melted and she was dancing with her Ajah Head Sirayn Sedai. The woman's mouth twisted as she spoke, “Really Jaydena, you choice of costume leaves something to be desired, Can you never get it right?†Jade wondered what in the Light Sirayn was talking about as it was always her that was dressed perfectly and Sirayn who wore the same outfit of black all the time. All of a sudden her Captain General grew red horns above each of her eyebrows and instead of dancing slippers she could see hooves where Sira's feet should have been. She trid to back up but Sirayn held her fast, the woman was much stronger than Jade remembered her being. Sirayn twisted her arm harshly and Jaydena cried out softly and felt relief when someone tapped on her shoulder. She turned and felt hope as Seia spoke, “May I cut in?†Jade almost smiled at her love dressed in a dashing pirate costume sneered at her and swept Sirayn into her arms. She saw the disgust flit across Seia's face before they danced out of her face.

My love ran away with hope in her heart

My love ran away with stars in her eyes

My love ran away with no thought of me

And all I have left are echoing lies

Her heart broke once more though she thought that her heart couldn't stand anymore. Turning quickly she caught her reflection in the mirror. She wore her favorite emerald silk gown, roses embroidered across the bodice, waist, and hems. A formal shawls graced her shoulders and her hair was elaborately curled and jewels at her ears and neck winked in the candlelight. However one half of her body was black and burnt, smoke rose from her skin and clothing. She raised her left hand to her hair and her gray curls fell away from her head and turned to ashes. Jade began screaming and knew she would never stop, she had nothing left and might as well give up and die....

Once again the humming came first. Soft and light and mesmerizing. As she half expected Jaydena once again found herself amidst the sea of white curtains. She turned her face upward, reveling in the soft caresses of the sheer material as it floated around her. Without realizing it she began to hum along with that compelling tune as she glided aimlessly. She was not surprised when the woman began to sing.

My love ran away with the promise of sunshine

The stars and the moon she took from mine eyes

Forsaken, bereft with my heart in my hands

My lovers sweet words were nothing but lies

Is this to be my tune, then? She wondered sadly.

The room materialized slowly, rich white marble floors and bare but for the woman seated with her back to Jade before an enormous silver dressing table. She brushed her long dark hair as she sang but the glass before her was dark casting no reflection, though it seemed to slither and writhe somehow. For a heartbeat Jaydena thought the woman was Sirayn, who had so often haunted her dreams of late. But though she was delicate the woman was too tall to be Sira. Besides that Jaydena could not imagine Sirayn indulging herself so, even in dreams.

“What troubles you so, dearheart?†The woman turned and for an instant Jaydena felt a flash of recognition. But the thought was fleeting, insubstantial and like smoke was gone as quickly as it had come.

Chocking back a laugh Jaydena stared hard at the woman, “Is that not evident?â€

The silver hairbrush glided through the long dark curls, “You speak of scars one can see. I speak of those deeply buried, and yet still fed by the fires of righteousness.â€

“Righteousness?†Jadyena drew back, clutching her arms protectively. “I harbor no scars but those you can see.â€

My love returned home in the heart of the winter

Clutching her hopes and her wishes and dreams

Chosen by none and her future decided

I can still hear her heartbreaking, echoing screams

How under the Light could the woman sing without moving her lips? But this is a dream, Jaydena told herself firmly. A dream and nothing more.

“Ah, but dreams have such power, dearheart.†Standing the woman crossed to Jaydena and lightly touched her arm, tugging gently. “Come, sit. Let us see your dreams.â€

Reluctantly the Green Sister let herself be led to the dressing table, idly noticing the stars and moons molded along the legs and edging. She stared at the shining top, bare until the woman laid her silver backed brush upon it, unwilling to meet her own gaze in the mirror.

Leaning forward the woman laid a hand on Jaydena’s shoulder and tipped up her chin, forcing her to stare into the glass. Jade’s eyes rounded and her mouth fell open. There before her, in all her perfection, was the old Jade, the beautiful, confident Jade. No scars, no burns. Haltingly she touched her face. A dream, she thought, nothing but a dream.

The woman slid onto the bench next to Jaydena, leaning against her as she tipped her head to study their reflections. “Dreams have power, Jaydena. Great power.†She waved a hand and the glass darkened again and then suddenly emitted image after image. Jade blinked as she tried to catch them all.

Sirayn kneeling before the two of them, tear stained face turned up to Jade pleadingly. Both Jaydena and her companion glowed with the light of Saidar but Sirayn… Flash Jaydena, whole and unscarred, seated at a desk as she addressed her three Sitters. They nodded and curtsied prettily before scurrying out of the Captain General’s sight. Flash Seia, oh Seia…her face creased from sleep, reaching to caress Jade’s smooth skin. Flash.

  • 2 weeks later...

The dream came again, as she had known it would. She feared it and yet a part of her craved it. Jade wanted to know exactly what was causing the dreams but she also wanted to see what developed on the dreams. Maybe in dreams she could have Seia and Sirayn, though in her real life her loves wanted nothing to do with her. The humming came first followed by the sweet voice,

My love ran away with the promise of sunshine

The stars and the moon she took from mine eyes

Forsaken, bereft with my heart in my hands

My lovers sweet words were nothing but lies

She wondered sadly if it was true and couldn't help but feel that it was as her heart ached and contracted with pain. The room came into focus slowly and she gazed around at white marble floors and a woman seat at a large silver vanity with her back to her. The woman was brushing her long black hair and she sang as she looked in the mirror. The mirror moved and slivered as though it was the reflection of a snake and Jade gasped as she watched it. For a moment she thought the woman was Sirayn and took a step closer and then she noticed that the woman still had a hand and was much taller than Sira. She snorted and reminded herself as well that Sirayn never indulged herself even in dreams.

“What troubles you so, dearheart?†The lady turned and looked at her and for a short moment Jade felt as if she knew her before the thought faded away as sand through a hourglass. Jade choked on a laugh and said with apparent sarcasm, “Is that not evident?†She watched in fascination as the woman's brush slide softly through the dark curls. “You speak of scars one can see. I speak of those deeply buried, and yet still fed by the fires of righteousness.†Jaydena drew back and crossed her arms over her chest as she spoke, “Righteousness? I harbor no scars but those you can see.â€

My love returned home in the heart of the winter

Clutching her hopes and her wishes and dreams

Chosen by none and her future decided

I can still hear her heartbreaking, echoing screams

Jaydena watched the woman wearily and wondered how the Light anyone could sing without even moving their mouth. She shook her head and forced herself to remember that this was a dream, nothing but a strange figment of her imagination. “Ah, but dreams have such power, dearheart.†Jaydena stepped backward and tried to remember if she had said that thought out loud. The woman walked toward her and reached out to take her arm, “Come, sit. Let us see your dreams.†Jaydena let herself be led to the vanity where she notcied that there were stars and moons molded along the legs and edging of the silver.

She stared down at the top, unwilling and unwanting to look at her own reflection in the mirror. The woman placed a hand on her shoulder and one under her chim and tipped her chin up until she was forced to look into the glass. Her eyes rounded in shock at what she saw and despite all of years of training her mouth dropped open. What was reflected back at her was her face, untouched by the burns that now graced her in her waking hours. She reached up and gently placed a hand on her unmarred flesh. The lady took a seat next to her and tipped her head and she looked at both of their reflections in the mirror. “Dreams have power, Jaydena. Great power.†Suddenly the woman waved a hand and the mirror darkened and began to shook images at her, she tried to catch as clearly as she could. Flash. Her eyes closed against the pain and she wondered how much more torture she was going to have to endure. She wanted those things but she now knew they could never come true...
