Far Madding - translation

I'm curious about something. How do various translations of the series handle Far Madding? Is the "far" translated? Does it actually mean "far" as in "far away", or does it have a more wot-ish meaning? I've always seen it as something connected to the Old Tongue, but apparently at least the Swedish translation thinks otherwise.

It remains Far Madding in German (nothing is translated) and also in Russian. No translation at all. can't comment on any other languages.

The only name change I remember is Luc being called Lus in the Swedish edition of TGH. Swedish Wikipedia says Far Madding was changed to Bortre Madding (which just means "further"), and a few other place names like Whitebridge and the Two Rivers were also translated.
